MAMI Mumbai Film Festival cancelled a year after losing sponsor; Hansal Mehta says: 'Abandoned by gatekeepers of cinema'

The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, a staple of Mumbai's cinematic calendar for close to three decades, has been cancelled for 2025. The organisers shared a statement announcing the cancellation on Monday morning, adding that a 'revamped' festival will be back in 2026. For years, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival was the premier film festival in India's cinematic capital.
MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2025 cancelled
The official Twitter (X) account of the festival shared a statement from Festival Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur on Monday morning. It read: "This is to inform you that the 2025 edition of MAMI Mumbai Film Festival will not take place as we are in the process of revamping the festival with a dynamic vision and a new team to ensure that the festival returns as a premier showcase for the best of independent, regional and classic cinema from India and around the world."
The statement added that the festival will be back in 2026. "We are working diligently to reschedule the festival and will announce the new dates for the 2026 edition as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and support," Dungarpur added.
Hansal Mehta reacts
The cancellation of the festival for the first time in 28 years has invited a wave of reactions from cinephiles and industry insiders. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta minced no words when he shared the announcement on X and wrote, "It's a cruel irony that Mumbai draped in the glitz of being India's financial and cinematic capital cannot keep alive a film festival of its own. Abandoned by the self-appointed gatekeepers of cinema who chased shinier stages and safer bets it was left in the hands of a few…"
History of the festival
The festival was started in 1997 by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), a public trust based in the city. Over the years, actors like Aamir Khan provided financial contributions while Priyanka Chopra and Kiran Rao served as the Chairperson. In 2023, the festival was sponsored by Jio. But they opted out as title sponsor last year. Dungarpur took over as Festival Director last year after the previous director, Anupama Chopra, stepped down. The 2024 edition of the festival was much smaller than previous editions.

Caught cheating at a Coldplay concert? Here are 5 books to feel all your feelings

(Written by Kaashvi Khubyani) So the internet just gave us the most dramatic plot twist of the month and no, it's not from a thriller novel. At Coldplay's recent concert, a crowd-cam caught Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and his HR chief Kristin Cabot allegedly having an affair. The scandal blew up faster than a Chris Martin high note, making Twitter wonder: was it 'Fix You' for the wife or 'Something Just Like This' for the duo? But amidst the chaos, the concert reminded us of something else – Coldplay doesn't just give us bangers, they give us book-worthy emotions. So, while the HR files might be open elsewhere, we're flipping open five books that vibe with five Coldplay anthems, each carrying a lyrical plot twist of its own. When Coldplay says 'I will try to fix you,' it feels written for Ove, a grumpy old man whose life has fallen apart after his wife's death. But a new neighbor and her chaos starts to rebuild the broken pieces of his grief. Both the song and the novel are love letters to second chances, emotional healing and the quiet way people save one another. This song and book are companions in the belief that we don't heal alone and sometimes, we need someone to sit beside us in the dark and promise: 'I will try to fix you.' Both Sally Rooney's Normal People and Coldplay's The Scientist revolve around the pain of love that is deeply misunderstood, not because it wasn't real but because people are sometimes incapable of saying what they feel. 'The Scientist' delves into same quiet nostalgia that fills Connell and Marianne's story. It's not about displaying your affection or betrayals ,it's about what's left unsaid and the misunderstandings that grow between two people who love each other. The refrain of 'let's go back to the start' could be a Rooney chapter title. 'You were all yellow,' sings Chris Martin, an image of brightness and beauty in someone who doesn't see it in themselves. Hazel never expected to be adored so wholly. But Augustus sees her pain and still thinks the stars, the universe and every broken piece of her isn't just about admiration- it's about saying 'I'd do anything for you', even if I can't fix you or save you. Just like Augustus' grand gestures, from the champagne pre-funeral to the trip to Amsterdam, the song hums with the same truth: 'For you, I'd bleed myself dry.' 'Viva La Vida' is the perfect tune to Dorian Gray's downfall. 'I used to rule the world' could easily be Dorian reflecting on his lost innocence and fame, after his obsession with vanity destroys him completely. Both the song and the book intersect in the duality of grandeur and guilt. If Wilde had a playlist, this would be track one sung by a once-beautiful man watching his own downfall in the mirror. The Picture of Dorian Gray and Viva La Vida are warnings that even the most glittering life, when built on self-obsession and sin, will crumble- first inside and then all around. In a café where time travel is possible, the question isn't 'can I go back?' but 'should I?' The ticking piano of 'Clocks' mirrors each character in the book that travels through time not to change the future, but to understand the past. Both are obsessed with time, fate, and consequences. Each character's journey has the desire to change something that perhaps shouldn't be changed. Together, they are a gentle reminder that while time moves forward, healing is just sitting with the past before the coffee gets cold.

Fact Check: Shubhman Gill Hugging Sara Tendulkar? Viral Image Sparks Debate On Social Media - Here's The Truth Behind Picture

A viral photo showing Indian Test captain Shubman Gill hugging a woman at a London event recently sent the internet into a frenzy, with many fans assuming it was Sara Tendulkar, daughter of legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. However, a closer look has revealed the truth behind the image and it's not what it seems. The Viral Image That Sparked Rumours The photo in question was taken during Yuvraj Singh's charity fundraiser event in London on July 8, 2025, where several celebrities and cricket stars gathered to support cancer awareness and treatment. Shubman Gill, who is currently leading the Indian Test team, was in attendance and seen greeting guests warmly. One particular moment where Gill hugged a woman dressed in white quickly spread across Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and fan pages. With both Shubman and Sara reportedly in London at the time, fans jumped to conclusions that the woman was none other than Sara Tendulkar. The image was labelled by many as the 'perfect picture of the day,' and dating rumours flared up yet again. Fact Check: It Wasn't Sara Tendulkar Contrary to speculation, the woman in the viral image is not Sara Tendulkar. In reality, the person hugging Shubman Gill is Hazel Keech, former Bollywood actress and wife of Yuvraj Singh. The original photo was shared by Hazel herself on her verified social media account, showing her meeting and greeting guests including Gill at the fundraiser. That viral video with Shubman Gill? Not Sara Tendulkar- it's Hazel Keech, Yuvraj Singh's wife..#ShubmanGill #saratendulkar #HazelKeech @ShubmanGill — Irfan isak shaikh (@irfan_speak786) July 20, 2025 Dressed in white and bearing some facial resemblance to Sara, Hazel was mistakenly identified by fans, which led to widespread confusion online. Hazel Keech At The Event Hazel Keech, a familiar face in the cricketing circuit thanks to her connection with Yuvraj Singh, was actively involved in the fundraiser. She has often supported her husband's foundation events and has been a regular attendee at cricket charity matches and related causes. The hug between Hazel and Gill was a simple, friendly moment captured on camera nothing more. The photo's romantic interpretation was purely fan speculation fueled by past rumours. The History Behind Gill-Sara Rumours This isn't the first time Shubman Gill and Sara Tendulkar have been linked. For years, their social media interactions including likes, comments, and follows have kept fans speculating about a possible relationship. At one point, both even unfollowed each other, adding fuel to the rumour mill. Despite neither confirming anything publicly, fans continue to monitor their activities closely. So, when this new image surfaced, it didn't take long for people to assume it was Sara — even though it wasn't. Social Media vs Reality The incident is yet another example of how quickly assumptions spread online, especially when celebrities and cricketers are involved. While fans may enjoy romantic narratives, this case shows how misleading viral moments can be when taken out of context. Shubman Gill remains focused on his cricketing duties, and Sara Tendulkar has not commented on the latest viral moment. As for the photo, it's now clear that it was Hazel Keech not Sara Tendulkar sharing a warm hug with Gill at the London event. So, the next time a photo goes viral, it's worth taking a moment to fact-check before jumping to conclusions. While the Gill-Sara mystery continues to intrigue fans, this latest chapter turned out to be a case of mistaken identity and a reminder that not everything on social media is as it seems.

The Raja Saab OTT release: Prabhas' horror comedy to premiere on Netflix after its theatrical run, but there's a twist

The Raja Saab OTT release: Prabhas will soon be seen in The Raja Saab, one of the biggest films of the year. The horror comedy is set to hit the screens in December. The Telugu film will also be dubbed and released in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Amid the wait for the biggie, exciting details have emerged about its OTT release. According to Always Bollywood, a handle on X (formerly known as Twitter) that tracks entertainment news, Netflix has acquired the digital rights of the film for Rs 100 crore. This, however, is for the Hindi version only. This means the Hindi version will be available on Netflix after its run in theatres. The Raja Saab plot and cast explored The Raja Saab is a horror comedy directed by Maruthi. The film's plot is still under wraps. However, the teaser suggests that it will centre on the events that unfold when the protagonist is haunted by the ghost of his paternal grandfather. It will also feature a liberal dose of action, comedy and glamour. The Raja Saab features Prabhas in a new avatar. The mass hero is best known for his work in films such as Baahubali, Salaar, and the Nag Ashwin-helmed Kalki 2898 AD. He will be seen with Sanjay Dutt in the biggie. The Bollywood star is known for his work in films such as Khal Nayak and KGF Chapter 2. The Raja Saab also features Nidhi Agerwal and Malavika Mohanan in the lead. The film's music is composed by S Thaman. Will Prabhas make it three in a row with The Raja Saab? The Raja Saab comes at a time when Prabhas is going through a terrific phase on the work front. He scored a big hit with Kalki 2898 AD. The dystopian action drama featured him as a bounty hunter and marked his first collaboration with legends such as Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. It grossed over Rs 1,000 crore globally. This was his second blockbuster after Salaar (2023). The action earned Rs 700 crore at the box office on a budget of Rs 270 crore to emerge. It remains to be seen whether The Raja Saab helps him keep the momentum going when it arrives in theatres on December 5.
