Osaka, 27, got her Championships off to a perfect start by beating Gibson 6-4 7-6.

Following her win, Osaka admitted that she didn't even know that Kyrgios had turned up: "Oh, he was there? I did not hear anything, okay."
The former world No1 added: "Oh, my God. I jokingly told someone, Hey, I know Nick's around, maybe he wants to come to my match.
"But I was joking, because I know we're, like, two completely different players. Honestly, I would have loved to come to his matches, because I know he's pretty fun.
"Yeah, I think that's also a big part of why we're different is 'cause I know he kind of like tells his box what to do, and he probably would have noticed if I was in there. I kind of, like, zone out most of the time.
"That's a little embarrassing that he was there.
"I guess it is cool that he was there."

Elena Rybakina swats Maria Sakkari aside to reach round three
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina barely needed to shift out of second gear as the 11th seed motored into the third round of the grasscourt Grand Slam with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Greek Maria Sakkari. Rybakina was gifted a break in the opening game when Sakkari produced three successive double faults and the 2022 Wimbledon champion held firm from there to wrap up the opening set with minimum fuss in front of a sparse crowd on Court One. The 26-year-old dropped her serve in the opening game of the next set but responded immediately to get things back on track and then broke to love for a 3-1 lead, before proceeding to take apart former world number three Sakkari. A backhand error on match point compounded Sakkari's woes and Rybakina celebrated the victory in typically muted fashion, with either Denmark's 23rd-seeded Clara Tauson or Russian Anna Kalinskaya awaiting her in the next round. Seventh seed Mirra Andreeva blasted her way into round three at Wimbledon on Thursday with a 6-1 7-6(4) victory over Italy's Lucia Bronzetti and thanked her coach, former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, for making her work hard. The 18-year-old Russian was the only teenager from six women's starters to have made it through to the second round and she looked sure-footed on Wimbledon's grass, the surface where she hit the headlines aged 16 with a whirlwind race to the fourth round in 2023. She completely dominated her 26-year-old opponent in the first set on Thursday using her big serve, heavy slice and neat net play to wrap it up in 23 minutes. But she had a fight on her hands in the second as Bronzetti, ranked a lowly 63, found her stride and range in the second. Andreeva eventually triumphed on her second match point in the tiebreak, with a fine forehand volley winner.

Wimbledon star Sonay Kartal playing for life-changing payday after struggling to afford a tennis coach
SONAY KARTAL has spoken of her tennis financial struggles while growing up – ahead of a potential £240,000 payday. 3 Sonay Kartal has dazzled the British crowd in SW19 Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Unlike some in the sport, the 23-year-old did not have a silver spoon in her mouth – she had a modest upbringing in Brighton and her family ran a local Turkish restaurant. Yet when it came to the sport she chose, having dabbled with football and cricket, she did not have any support until hooking up with the LTA aged 19 and earning Pro Scholarship Programme (PSP) funding. Kartal – who plays French qualifier Diane Parry on Friday – has £152,000 in her back pocket but if she wins two sets, she will add an extra £68,000 to her back balance. The British No.3 said: 'Obviously tennis is super expensive. READ MORE WIMBLEDON 'When I was growing up, I kind of did quite a lot of tournaments on my own because I couldn't afford to pay a coach week-in, week-out. 'It helped me develop as a teenager, grow up super fast, made me much more mature. I held myself accountable to a lot of things. 'The LTA helped me massively. It came at exactly the right time. It was when I started to come on the scene and was putting together a few good wins consistently. 'They really helped to give me all the equipment and access to everything I needed to develop as well.
