AirAsia plans to train Sabah youth in aviation roles
AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said this is part of the airline's initiative to develop local human capital, focusing on B40 youth.
He noted that while tourism remains Sabah's main economic contributor, AirAsia aims to enhance its contributions through local talent and skilled resource development.
"We already have many cabin crew, engineers, and pilots. We wish to help create more pilots, engineers, and technical crews from Sabah youths," he said.
Fernandes made these remarks during a courtesy visit to Sabah Head of State Tun Musa Aman on Tuesday (June 3).
He mentioned they are ready with the syllabus and programme structures and will establish a working committee for implementation soon.
Applications will open once programme funding is sufficient, he added.
"We aim to start this programme before the end of the year, beginning with pilot training," said Fernandes.
He said that the programme will eventually cover other areas like engineering, technical roles, and artificial intelligence (AI), in line with the company's investment in the latest technology.
"In the flight industry, AirAsia is moving towards AI for network scheduling, fuel saving, and luggage management," he said.
AirAsia wants Sabahans to be part of this technological advancement, Fernandes added.

Capital A, AirAsia X delay AAAGL share deal closing to Aug 31
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Capital A Bhd and AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) have mutually agreed to further extend the AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd (AAAGL) and AirAsia Bhd's (AAAGL) cut-off date under both companies' share sale and purchase agreements (SSPAs), respectively, from July 31, 2025 until Aug 31, 2025 or such other date as mutually agreed. The extension is for Capital A and AAX to satisfy the remaining AAAGL and AAB conditions precedent. 'This is to allow additional time for the Capital A and AAX to, among others, obtain the approval and/or consent of the relevant authorities, financiers/lenders and/or third parties as well as for AAX to finalise the definitive terms with the identified investors in relation to AAX's proposed pre-completion private placement exercise,' the companies said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia. Meanwhile, AAX yesterday agreed to extend the period for the satisfaction or fulfilment of the relevant conditions precedent under the SSPAs which remain unsatisfied up to August 31, 2025. Stop foreign trader invasion in Sabah like in Peninsula - Warisan
A foreigner operating a grocery stall in Sabah. KOTA KINABALU (July 28): The Local Government and Housing Ministry should stop issuing small kampung grocery retail shop licences to foreigners like in the Peninsular Malaysia, said a local politician. Warisan Kg Kapayan Branch leader Pritchard Gumbaris concurs with Federal Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, who made it clear that these licences must not be issued to foreigners. 'I strongly agree — and I believe this must not just be an announcement for the Peninsula, but fully enforced here in Sabah as well,' he said. 'Kapayan and Moyog are flooded with foreign traders. Walk through our kampungs and you will see it yourself — local shopkeepers being pushed aside, and outsiders taking over spaces meant for Sabahans. And this is not just a Penampang issue — this same situation is happening across every district in Sabah, with rural and urban communities alike feeling the pressure of uncontrolled foreign retail operations,' he said in a statement on Monday. Pritchard who is also the Political Secretary to Parti Warisan deputy president Datuk Darell Leiking, said the problem was solved before through a strict and disciplined process during the Warisan Plus government, when they worked hand-in-hand with the Penampang Municipal Council and the district local authorities to curb the mushrooming of foreign-operated shops. 'Every trading licence application in the villages required the village chief's endorsement, and the village chief had to be strict when approving each application — no rubber stamps, no shortcuts. Our office personally vetted every case through interviews, photo checks, and site inspections. I chaired joint meetings with village leaders to scrutinise applications and we were never afraid to reject those found to involve foreigners using local proxies or falsified documents. 'It worked. Foreign-operated small kampung grocery retail shops dropped sharply, and our local entrepreneurs finally had breathing space. 'But today, that hard work has been undone as enforcement has collapsed. The process we built was not maintained, and now foreign traders are mushrooming again,' said Pritchard. He said this is the very reason Warisan has proposed an Ombudsman Committee — an independent body to receive complaints from any whistleblower on corrupt practices, so that accountability starts at the local community level. 'The Sabah Trades Licensing Ordinance 1948 (Sabah Cap. 144), specifically Section 5 and the First Schedule, already outlines the conditions for trading licences — including clear restrictions on foreigners operating businesses in kampungs. The problem is not the absence of law. The problem is the absence of political will to enforce it,' he stressed. Pritchard urged Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam to take this issue seriously. 'It is his ministry's duty to ensure that the state's local councils enforce these rules without fear or favour, and that no loopholes are allowed for foreign operators to abuse. 'If Warisan is given the mandate in Kapayan, we will restore this enforcement system immediately. We will bring back the same tough, proven process — because it worked before, and it will work again. 'Nga Kor Ming has drawn the line. Now it is time for Sabah to follow through — with real action, not empty talk,' he said.

Both stability and growth apparent under GRS: Duo

Kota Kinabalu: Two prominent business leaders lauded the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-PH government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor for maintaining political stability and driving inclusive economic development in the State. Chief Executive Officer of Kumpulan BTC Berhad Datuk Abdul Kadir M.E. Sikkandar, said the current administration has created a conducive environment for business growth and investor confidence. He highlighted the government's commitment to transparency, inclusiveness and people-centric development, stating that Sabah today stands on a strong foundation. 'With continued leadership under Hajiji I am confident Sabah will scale even greater heights. 'Political uncertainty continues to challenge other parts of the country, but Sabah has emerged as a model of calm, unity and steady progress,' he said. Abdul Kadir said Kumpulan BTC Berhad, a homegrown company, has grown significantly under the current administration and now employs over 800 Sabahans across various sectors. He attributed the expansion to the state's stable political climate and pro-business policies under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan. 'The SMJ Plan has reenergised key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, infrastructure and renewable energy. 'While also opening up opportunities for local and Bumiputera entrepreneurs to thrive,' he said. Abdul Kadir who is also the Deputy President of the Dewan Usahawan Melayu Sabah observed a renewed sense of optimism among local entrepreneurs, especially younger Sabahans exploring opportunities in business, agriculture and innovation within the State. Meanwhile, prominent businessman Tan Sri TC Goh said the GRS government's economic stewardship has yielded remarkable results. 'The result exceeded expectations and solidifying its position as a capable administrator,' said the Sabah Advisory Council (SEAC) member. 'The Government's success is underscored by a dramatic increase in state revenue: nearly RM7 billion annually for 2022, 2023, and 2024 – a significant leap from RM3.5 billion in 2020,' Goh said. This growth, Goh said, mirrored a robust rise in Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), climbing from RM83.2 billion in 2023 to RM84.3 billion in 2024, coupled with a substantial increase in state reserves to RM8.6 billion. He said these figures demonstrate a healthy and thriving economy, directly attributable to the GRS government's effective management.
