'Reels Won't Build Your Future': Perplexity CEO's Straight-Talk Advice to the Scrolling Generation.
short-form content
dominates attention spans and 'doom-scrolling' has become the default pastime,
Aravind Srinivas
, CEO and co-founder of
Perplexity AI
, is sounding the alarm. His recent statement aimed directly at young people glued to Instagram Reels and TikTok videos:
"Stop watching reels. Go build your own future."
It's not just a wake-up call; it's a challenge.
Srinivas, who's at the helm of one of the most rapidly growing AI startups in the world, understands the power of technology more than most. But he's also acutely aware of its risks, particularly the way it hijacks attention and delays personal development. His advice comes not from a place of judgment, but from firsthand experience of what it takes to be world-class in a hypercompetitive, AI-dominated future.

Distraction Is the Enemy of Innovation
Srinivas points out a truth: passive consumption doesn't lead to progress. In his view, every hour spent mindlessly consuming 'junk food for the brain' is an hour not spent building skills, reading deeply, or working on high-leverage problems. For those looking to carve out meaningful careers, particularly in fields being transformed by AI and tech, he stresses the importance of curiosity, learning, and experimentation.

'You can't become exceptional by consuming mediocre content,' he said during a recent Q&A. Instead, he recommends using platforms like Perplexity itself, a
knowledge engine
designed to promote active inquiry and deep understanding, as a daily tool for learning and exploration.
The Opportunity Cost of Reels
The addictive nature of reels may seem harmless, but the long-term cost is steep. Srinivas argues that the biggest missed opportunity isn't just time, it's potential. While millions scroll, a small fraction are coding, writing, building, and experimenting. That's the delta that defines success in the coming decade. As AI levels the playing field, discipline and intellectual curiosity become the true differentiators.

A Culture Shift Is Coming
Srinivas's message aligns with a broader trend: a growing pushback against
algorithmic addiction
and digital overconsumption. Increasingly, voices from across tech, from venture capitalists to startup founders, are urging young people to reclaim their time, their minds, and their ambitions. Srinivas is part of that wave, but with a sharper edge and actionable urgency.
The next generation has the most powerful tools in human history at its fingertips. The question, Srinivas implies, is whether they'll use them to consume or to create. The choice is binary, and the future belongs to the builders.

OpenAI introduces study mode for deeper, structured learning for students
OpenAI on Tuesday announced the launch of a 'study mode' in its large-language model-based chatbot, ChatGPT, to help students work through problems instead of simply getting the answer to a question. The new 'study mode' will be available to all logged-in users of ChatGPT's Free, Plus, Pro, and Team versions. It will also be available with ChatGPT Edu over the next few weeks, the company said in a blog post. Since its introduction, ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used learning tools for students worldwide, used for tackling challenging homework, preparing for exams, and exploring new concepts and ideas, according to OpenAI. 'But its use in education has also raised an important question: how do we ensure it is used to support real learning, and doesn't just offer solutions without helping students make sense of them,' the company said. In 'study mode', ChatGPT will prompt students to interact with questions tailored to their objective and skill level, helping them build a deeper understanding of the subject. The new mode has been built on system instructions developed by OpenAI in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts. The key features of the new mode include prompting students, providing responses in easy-to-follow sections, personalised learning support, quizzes, and open-ended questions to check learning on a continuous basis, as OpenAI stated in the post. 'As we run longer-term studies on how students learn best with AI, we intend to publish a deeper analysis of what we have learned about the links between model design and cognition, shape future product experiences based on these insights, and work side by side with the broader education ecosystem to ensure AI benefits learners worldwide,' OpenAI said. The leading global company in AI has introduced a range of new features in its products over the past few years. Earlier this year, in April, OpenAI introduced updates that allowed users to search, compare, and buy products in ChatGPT by providing personalised recommendations for products, visual details of the product they are looking for, the price, as well as a direct link to purchase it. In February 2024, OpenAI said it was 'testing the ability for ChatGPT to remember things you discuss to make future chats more helpful'. The idea, OpenAI had then said, was to save users from 'having to repeat information' so that future conversations with the chatbot became more useful. The memory feature was rolled out to all users in September that year. In an update on April 10 this year, OpenAI said that the memory in ChatGPT was now comprehensive as the LLM could, in addition to memories saved by users, also reference past conversations between the chatbot and the user to deliver more personalised responses. In December 2024, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT's integration with WhatsApp, where users could send a message to ChatGPT to get up-to-date answers.

DTH companies may get licence fee relief
Mumbai: The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) is reviewing the licence fee structure for direct-to-home (DTH) services as lobbying by operators intensifies amid rising subscriber churn and falling revenues, people aware of the development told ET. The ministry is in the process of preparing a Cabinet note that could lead to a significant reduction in the fee charged to private DTH operators, namely Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV and Sun Direct, the people cited earlier said, adding that any proposal to reduce licence fee will also require approval from the finance ministry, as it involves revenue considerations. Following the inter-ministerial consultation, the proposal will require the Union Cabinet's approval for implementation. Industry players argue that this cost has become increasingly difficult to bear, as more consumers migrate to OTT streaming services and the free-to-air DD Free Dish platform. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo Government officials confirmed that deliberations are underway and indicated that a decision is likely, though they did not specify a timeline. The possible revision follows repeated recommendations from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), which has urged the ministry to reduce the fee to 3% in FY26 and abolish it entirely by the end of FY27. Live Events Trai argues that DTH platforms should be treated on par with other distribution services, whether regulated or not, such as cable TV, DD Free Dish and OTT platforms, none of which pay a licence fee. "The DTH sector is under considerable financial strain, and we urge the government to implement Trai's recommendations without delay," said Dish TV CEO Manoj Dobhal. "Regulatory relief is essential for our viability, especially as consumer behaviour shifts and revenues decline." India's active pay-TV DTH subscriber base has dropped from 70.26 million in 2020 to 56.92 million in 2025, a loss of over 13 million subscribers in five years, according to Trai's Performance Indicators Reports. In FY24, the combined revenue of the four private DTH operators stood at ₹10,230 crore, down 5% from the previous year. Meanwhile, the IB ministry has issued demand notices worth over Rs16,000 crore to these companies for unpaid licence fees, a figure that exceeds the sector's total annual revenue. The ministry's licence fee collection from DTH has plunged from ₹1,581 crore in FY22 to ₹648 crore in FY25, a decline of nearly 59%, highlighting the sector's worsening financial position. DTH operators have previously petitioned the government to eliminate the licence fee altogether. They argue that their platforms should be treated on par with other TV distribution systems such as cable and IPTV, which are not subject to similar levies.

AI puts 600,000 jobs at risk but opens new roles, says Malaysia's HR minister
Malaysia's job landscape is undergoing a major transformation as artificial intelligence (AI) accelerates across industries, according to Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. Speaking at the 52nd ARTDO International Conference , Sim said AI could unlock thousands of new employment opportunities, with over 60 emerging job roles already identified, 70% of them in the AI and tech sector. A recent ministry-commissioned study revealed that 600,000 existing jobs are "at risk" due to AI, though not necessarily lost. 'Some may become obsolete, but most will be reshaped, demanding urgent reskilling and upskilling,' Sim said. He urged a shift from 'worry to strategy,' stressing that Malaysia must equip its workforce with AI-ready skills. New job roles such as prompt engineers are emerging, requiring not just technical expertise but also oversight of AI-generated outputs. Sim emphasised two key skill pillars: high-level AI proficiency for managing or developing AI systems, and broad AI literacy for everyday users. To support this, the MyMahir portal is helping Malaysians align their training with future-ready skills. Sim also highlighted the need for clear ethical and legal frameworks to guide AI's development responsibly. 'This is not just about technology, it's about values, regulation, and inclusive growth,' he concluded, reinforcing the ministry's commitment to balancing innovation with workforce readiness.
