Airline industry scales back profit outlook

NEW YORK: The global airline industry stands to earn a collective US$36bil this year, a downward revision from the most recent prediction issued in December amid growing trade tensions and a drop in consumer confidence, the leading aviation association says.
The new forecast aligns with the US$ 36.6bil profit target issued for 2025 at the end of last year, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said in a statement yesterday.
The figure translates into a profit margin of 3.7% on industry revenue of about US$979bil, which was also revised from the December goal.
'The first half of 2025 has brought significant uncertainties to global markets,' IATA director general Willie Walsh said in the release.
At the same time, the industry is benefitting from lower oil prices, which are in turn trimming airlines' fuel bills – the biggest single expense for carriers.
Airlines, particularly in the United States, have been forced to scale back their outlooks recently after price-sensitive passengers reconsidered their travel plans and some high-profile accidents discouraged bookings.
In March, Delta Air Lines Inc slashed its first quarter profit guidance and also reduced its outlook for revenue growth and operating margin.
That was a sharp reversal from the start of the year, when it saw a steady demand environment.
Walsh said that he remains optimistic, considering some of the events restraining growth are 'short-term in nature'.
'It won't have a long-term impact on the growth in the industry,' Walsh said. 'Demand for aviation, demand for flying, will remain strong.'
Last year, the industry earned a collective US$32.4bil, on a margin of 3.4%. Walsh said profitability remains 'wafer thin', highlighting how easily airlines can see their targets dissolve because of economic headwinds and changing consumer sentiment.
The North American market is expected to see the highest total profit contribution at US$12.7bil, followed by Europe.
The Middle East, home to giant carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways, will account for the highest profit per passenger, IATA said, though capacity there is being limited by aircraft delivery delays.
Airline executives have gathered in New Delhi this week for the IATA's annual meeting to discuss the state of the sector.
India has become a key market for future growth as a rising middle class takes up flying, putting the country of over 1.4 billion people on the move.
That's drawing more global airlines to the region, with Delta chief executive officer Ed Bastian calling a code-sharing agreement announced on the eve of the meeting with local discount specialist IndiGo 'the next step of our growth strategy'.
Bastian said in a separate interview that he expects the latter part of the year to show improved demand after what he said was a 'choppy' start to 2025 amid trade tensions and hesitancy, especially among leisure travellers in the United States to book flights. — Bloomberg

The tragedy unfolded in Florida when George McGee's Tesla struck a car, killing 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon and severely injuring her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo. McGee confessed to cellphone distraction, yet jurors found Tesla 33 percent at fault. They deemed Autopilot defective for permitting use on unfit roads without sufficient safeguards or alerts. Tesla said in a statement, "Today's verdict is wrong and only works to set back automotive safety and jeopardize Tesla's and the entire industry's efforts to develop and implement life-saving technology." Tesla said it will appeal. Since launching Autopilot in 2015, Tesla has faced growing scrutiny over the driving feature. U.S. regulators have investigated multiple crashes, including a probe opened by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in October 2024 into Tesla's Full Self-Driving system after four crashes in low-visibility conditions, including one pedestrian fatality, according to agency documents. In another inquiry in April 2024, the administration analyzed 467 Autopilot crashes with 54 injuries, leading to a recall of over 2 million vehicles for enhanced driver alerts, per agency records. In January 2025, it launched a probe into 2.6 million Tesla cars over remote driving features after four reported crashes. Meanwhile, the California Department of Motor Vehicles recently accused Tesla of misleading advertising by using terms like "Autopilot" and "Full Self-Driving." It is seeking to suspend Tesla's license to sell vehicles in the state, its biggest U.S. market, for at least 30 days and may also push for consumer warnings and restitution. Brazil announced a compromise in a dispute between Chinese EV maker BYD and traditional carmakers on Thursday, granting the company a short-term tariff break while moving forward with hikes that will hit it more aggressively in the long run. The decision was reached in a closed-door session of the Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex) on Wednesday but not released publicly until Thursday. It follows weeks of heavy lobbying on both sides, with carmakers warning of mass lay-offs and BYD accusing rivals of trying to shut out competition. Under the measure, BYD will be allowed to import up to US$463 million worth of semi-assembled electric and hybrid vehicles over a six-month period without paying import taxes. This tariff-free window will apply during the first half of 2026, offering short-term relief as BYD ramps up local production. Separately, the government decided to bring forward a previously scheduled levy increase. The import tariff for electric and hybrid vehicle kits will now rise to 35 per cent in January 2027, a year and a half earlier than the original July 2028 timeline. Fully assembled vehicles will reach the same 35 per cent rate by July 2026, as previously planned. BYD had requested a reduced tariff through mid-2026 to ease the ramp-up of its new manufacturing plant in Camaçari, Bahia State. The company, investing R$5.5 billion (US$978 million) in the facility, argued that temporary relief was necessary as it builds up its local production capacity. But the proposal triggered an immediate backlash. In a joint letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers, or Anfavea, warned that the exemption could put R$180 billion in planned investment at risk and eliminate as many as 50,000 jobs. Signed by officials from Toyota, General Motors, Stellantis and Volkswagen, the letter accused BYD of seeking an unfair advantage and said Brazil risked becoming a low-complexity 'screwdriver economy'. Six state governors, mostly from Brazil's southern and southeastern industrial heartland, also opposed the measure, urging the government to delay the decision and consult regional leaders. Thursday's announcement attempts to strike a balance. BYD receives limited short-term relief, while Anfavea gets the accelerated tax schedule it sought. Anfavea praised the compromise, describing the six-month exemption as 'the upper limit' of what the industry could accept without jeopardising existing and future investment. 'We hope this matter is now definitively closed, with no room for further extensions,' Anfavea President Igor Cavet said. He also credited the outcome to coordinated pressure from carmakers, labour unions, governors and lawmakers, calling it a demonstration of the sector's strength. 'This is not just about the automotive industry,' he added. 'It's about the kind of industrial future we want for Brazil, one that generates innovation, skilled jobs and a stronger domestic supply chain.' For its part, BYD remained defiant. In a sharply worded open letter, the company referred to its rivals as 'dinosaurs' that panicked when forced to lower prices and offer better technology. The company, however, is yet to react to the government's decision. BYD began assembling its first vehicle in Brazil in July using semi-knocked down kits, in which the car arrives mostly built. The company plans to switch to fully knocked-down kits within 18 months and eventually reach 70 per cent local content by 2028 under an agreement with the Bahia government. The company is expanding its complex in Camacari, where construction on a second production facility is under way. Along with a rival Chinese brand GWM, BYD has rapidly captured market share in Brazil's electrified vehicle segment. South Korea has pledged US$150 billion to help its shipbuilders enter the US market as part of its new trade deal with Washington, a move that could help America revive its shipbuilding industry and counter China's dominance in the sector. US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States and South Korea had agreed a 'full and complete' trade deal, which would see the US impose a 15 per cent tariff on South Korean goods and receive US$350 billion of investment from its Asian ally. Shortly after, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung stated that US$150 billion of the promised investment would be dedicated to shipbuilding – an industry where South Korean firms are second only to China in global market share. The capital would provide 'solid support' for South Korean companies entering the US shipbuilding industry, Lee wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday. The wider US$350 billion investment package was intended to solidify bilateral cooperation in strategic industries, including semiconductors, he added. Seoul clarified in a media briefing on Thursday morning that the promised funds would not come in the form of direct equity investments, but 'will primarily consist of loans and guarantees'. Earlier this week, local media outlets in South Korea reported that Seoul had proposed a multibillion-dollar project to Washington named 'Make American Shipbuilding Great Again' during their trade negotiations, which would involve large-scale investments in the US by Korean shipbuilders and government financial support measures. State-run entities like the Export-Import Bank of Korea and Korea Trade Insurance Corporation were being considered for involvement in the scheme, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported on Monday. South Korea's shipbuilding industry is regarded as being uniquely positioned to assist Washington's ambition of reviving American shipbuilding and restraining China's dominance in the sector. Earlier this year, Washington announced plans to begin charging steep port fees targeting China-built or operated vessels from October. The policy appears to already be benefiting South Korea's shipbuilders as companies become nervous about placing new orders with Chinese shipyards. In the first half of 2025, South Korea's share of new vessel orders rose to 25.1 per cent in vessel gross tonnage terms, compared with 15 per cent last year. China's share, meanwhile, slipped to 51.8 per cent from 70 per cent, according to a report released by the Export-Import Bank of Korea on Monday. The report said South Korea's recovery in market share had largely been driven by US-China tensions, but added that the benefits may not last long, as US actions against China were likely to push up freight rates and logistics costs on US routes. However, analysts expressed scepticism about the feasibility of Seoul's investment pledge and cautioned that rebuilding America's shipbuilding capacity would likely be a long and challenging process. 'It is not the foreign country investing in the US. It is individual companies doing it, and the government cannot dictate what they will do,' said Lars Jensen, founder of the maritime consultancy Vespucci Maritime. He added that it was easy to announce a large investment figure over an unspecified time period, but that the actual implementation would be a different matter. Wu Jialu, a chief analyst of industrial research at Citic Futures, said the US$150 billion investment may prompt South Korean shipbuilders to build or acquire shipyards in the US, providing talent and technological support. South Korean firms could help improve the competitiveness of the US shipbuilding industry, particularly in the construction of high-value-added vessels, but reviving the whole industry would still be a protracted process due to supply chain and capacity limitations, she said. The full impact of the US port fees has yet to become clear, and future market trends would also depend on fleet renewal and upgrading demand, Wu added. Hanwha Ocean, one of South Korea's top shipbuilders, made a major investment in December to acquire Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia, which is currently the only US shipyard that is operated by a South Korean company. In late July, Hanwha Ocean's US subsidiary placed an order for a liquefied natural gas carrier at the Philly Shipyard, the first LNG carrier for export to be built in the US in nearly five decades. However, a significant portion of the construction will be carried out at Hanwha Ocean's Geoje shipyard in South Korea, while the Philly Shipyard will be responsible for US regulatory compliance and safety certifications, Hanwha said, noting it was 'laying the foundation for a collaborative production framework'. Japan also finalised a deal with the US in July that will see the creation of a US$550 billion fund to invest in a range of projects, including the construction and modernisation of US-based shipyards. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
