(Reuters) -OpenAI is planning to take a cut from online product sales made through ChatGPT by integrating a payment checkout system into the chatbot, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing multiple people familiar with the proposals.
Merchants that fulfill orders through the payment system will pay a commission to OpenAI, the report said.
The move would allow OpenAI to tap a new source of revenue, taking advantage of the heavy user traffic on ChatGPT, in addition to its traditional subscription model.
The checkout feature is still in development, but OpenAI and partners such as e-commerce platform Shopify have been presenting early versions of the system to brands and discussing financial terms, the report said.
OpenAI and Shopify did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
The two companies had announced a partnership earlier this year, shortly after the AI startup launched an enhanced shopping feature to better display products and reviews, the report added.
The Sam Altman-led company currently displays suggested products on ChatGPT through links that take users to online retailers' websites.
OpenAI said earlier this year that its annualized revenue run rate surged to $10 billion as of June, up from $5.5 billion in December 2024. The company, however, lost around $5 billion last year.

Trump reclassifies some federal workers

July 17: U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday creating a new classification of non-career federal workers who can more easily be fired if they fail to carry out a president's priorities, the White House said. The new classification, called Schedule G, will be for employees involved in policy making who will now be expected to leave their positions when the president who appointed them leaves office, according to a White House fact sheet. The White House did not provide details on how many workers would be put into this new classification. Earlier this year, Trump signaled the change, saying the federal government will finally be 'run like a business.' The executive order will likely strip vast numbers of the roughly 2.3 million federal workforce of their job protections by effectively making them employees at will. Trump ordered the reclassification of many government workers at the end of his first term, known as Schedule F, which former Democratic President Joe Biden rescinded on his first day in office in 2021. Estimates then were that Schedule F could have made at least 50,000 federal workers vulnerable to being fired. - Reuters

OpenAI unveils ChatGPT agent to handle tasks as AI apps evolve

FILE PHOTO: A keyboard is placed in front of a displayed OpenAI logo in this illustration taken February 21, 2023. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/ File Photo (Reuters) -OpenAI launched an artificial intelligence agent for its popular chatbot ChatGPT on Thursday that can complete complex tasks as the Microsoft-backed startup looks to get ahead of competitors in the AI race. AI agents — considered to be an evolution of an assistant — have been embraced across the tech world with large firms, including Microsoft, Salesforce and Oracle, spending billions on the technology to boost productivity and make operations more cost efficient. OpenAI's agent will combine aspects of its previous agentic features, operator, which can interact with websites, and deep research that can conduct multi-step research for advanced tasks. Starting Thursday, users of ChatGPT's Pro, Plus and Team tiers can activate the chatbot's agentic capabilities. ChatGPT's agent can complete tasks such as ordering an outfit for a wedding while taking into account factors like dress code and weather. The chatbot does this by using its own virtual computer equipped with a number of tools that can interact with the web. It also allows the user to connect apps such as Gmail and Github so ChatGPT can find information relevant to a prompt. (Reporting by Zaheer Kachwala in Bengaluru; Editing by Shilpi Majumdar)
