Cole Palmer stars as Chelsea claim stunning Club World Cup victory against PSG
Palmer scored two fine goals and created another for Joao Pedro, all in the first half, as the Premier League side defied huge odds in New York to shock the reigning European champions.
Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was also outstanding as the Blues, who had been clear underdogs at the MetLife Stadium, secured a jackpot in excess of £90million as the first winners of FIFA's new 32-team tournament.

PSG lost their discipline in the closing stages and Joao Neves was sent off with five minutes remaining for pulling the hair of Marc Cucurella.
FIFA, the world governing body, had been determined to make the occasion, which was attended by US President Donald Trump, a huge success.
The pre-match programme, which included a performance from Robbie Williams and a US Air Force flyover, overran and led to a kick-off delay – but Chelsea all but had the game wrapped up before Doja Cat appeared at half-time.
It was a remarkable achievement against a PSG side that had been chasing their fifth trophy of a glorious season.
Palmer, the Conference League final match-winner, was at his dazzling best and many in the stadium thought he had opened the scoring after eight minutes when he curled narrowly wide from a Pedro flick.
PSG should have made the most of that reprieve and taken the lead themselves after Fabian Ruiz played in Desire Doue, but he opted to pass instead of shoot and Cucurella cleared.
Doue did get an effort on goal shortly afterwards but Sanchez reacted well.
Palmer took charge of the match after 22 minutes when he placed a left-foot shot perfectly into the bottom corner after Malo Gusto had seen his own attempt blocked.
PSG were left reeling when he repeated the feat just eight minutes later.
This time Palmer created the opportunity himself, latching onto a long ball from Levi Colwill and cutting inside from the right, and the finish was every bit as composed.
He was not finished there either, turning provider before the interval to slip Pedro through on goal.
The Brazilian, who scored twice on his full debut in the semi-final win over Fluminense, showed equally great composure to lift the ball over Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Mr Trump said he was 'having a really great time' when interviewed by broadcaster DAZN at half-time and the Chelsea fans in the 81,118 crowd would doubtless have said likewise after such a scintillating display.
PSG rallied but Sanchez kept out a header from Neves and then showed brilliant reflexes to paw away a close-range snap-shot on the turn from Ousmane Dembele.
Liam Delap had a superb effort pushed away by Donnarumma within moments of coming off the Chelsea bench and went close again soon after.
PSG were beaten and frustration was evident as Neves clashed with Cucurella and earned a red card after tugging at the Spaniard's hair.

Celtic transfer panic is silly claims Jury as super Jack Butland no more at Rangers met head on
Celtic went down in their bounce game against Estrela, should Hoops fans be concerned about their squad at this stage? KEITH JACKSON: Don't be silly. They're going into next season on the back of a second consecutive league and cup double. The squad doesn't need an overhaul but Brendan Rodgers will want to make one or two tweaks to his starting XI. Kieran Tierney is a good start but the manager will have his eye on a left sided centre half, a couple of wingers and an oven ready striker. CRAIG SWAN: It's the same old issues. Celtic will have eyes on big targets, but the market for these guys doesn't get into full swing until later. It's not a new problem. Concerned? Maybe. Panicky? Surely not. MICHAEL GANNON: It's too soon to be hitting any panic button but there is a lot of work to be done with this Hoops squad. Time is on their side but they will need to ramp it up and bring in two or three oven ready recruits. RYAN MCDONALD: The result means diddly-squat. But Celtic need to get new faces in the door sharp to allow them to bed in ahead of the Champions League play-offs. Replacements for Kyogo and Nicolas Kuhn should be top of the list, plus a new centre-back. Should Jack Butland start the season as Rangers no.1? KEITH: Yes. Butland was a bit bruised after a dip in form last season but if he's back to his best he's a game changer of a keeper. The only question is, is he good enough with the ball at his feet to fit into Russell Martin 's style of play? CRAIG: Jack Butland is a top-class goalkeeper at his best and, following a summer refresh, he can prove he's the best option. MICHAEL: Butland had a bit of a ropey time of it last season but he's still a top keeper. He deserves to get the nod and remain in place for now – but he'll need to cut out the daft errors that have plagued him in the last 12 months. RYAN: The short answer is yes. He'll be given a clean slate by Russell Martin, just like the rest of the squad. Butland has probably lost the faith of most Rangers fans and will know he has a point to prove. He can't afford to have any early season howlers, especially in the European qualifiers. Are Rangers be ready to take on Panathinaikos next week? KEITH: They're going to have to get a lot of work done on the training ground and Russell Martin will also have to be busy in the transfer market before the Greeks come to town. Getting the Conor Coady deal over the line will give him a better chance but either way qualification already looks like a tall order. CRAIG: It's always early in the season to face these games and Rangers are going to find it tough to get to full speed. They'll need to play well. MICHAEL: Gers look a tad undercooked, but it was always going to be the case. This qualifier is a dangerous tie and it may be too soon for Russell Martin. If he can pull it off it would be a remarkable achievement, but not many would expect or demand it. RYAN: It's far from ideal that these qualifiers come in July. But you need to give credit to Rangers. They've recognised that there's no time to lose and have seven new signings in the door already. How quickly they gel together remains to be seen, but they are clearly mindful of the huge challenge ahead. Is it time to bring Trump Turnberry back in the frame to host the Open Championship KEITH: Probably. He may be a threat to the world order and his hair is an absolute disgrace but big POTUS knows what a good golf course looks like. And Turnberry is very possibly as good as it gets. CRAIG: The course is terrific. But The R&A insist the infrastructure is not there in other aspects and it's hard to see a return unless that changes. MICHAEL: There are the traditional troubles with infrastructure at Turnberry, but, let's face it, the R&A don't want the hassle attached to the name above the door on the place. We might need to wait until after he's departed the White House before it's back on the agenda.

Monday's briefing: Chelsea surprise Paris St Germain as Lionesses move forward
It proved a successful evening too for England's women as they booked their place in the Euro 2025 quarter-finals with a 6-1 rout of Wales, who are heading home as a result. Elsewhere, there were emotional tributes to Diogo Jota ahead of Liverpool's friendly victory at Preston. Palmer gives PSG the Blues Cole Palmer scored twice as Chelsea beat Paris St Germain 3-0 in the Club World Cup final (Seth Wenig/AP) Cole Palmer hit back at the critics who had been giving Chelsea 's***' after firing them to Club World Cup glory in New York. Palmer, who was presented with the Man of the Match award by President Donald Trump, scored the first two goals and set up the third in a surprise 3-0 final victory over Champions League winners Paris St Germain at the MetLife Stadium as Enzo Maresca's men capped an encouraging season in style. Asked how excited he was by the team Maresca is building at Stamford Bridge, the England international told DAZN: 'He's building something special, something important with a young team. Everyone's talked a lot of s*** about us all season, but I feel like we're going in the right direction.' Reflecting on the game, Palmer added: 'Obviously it's a great feeling, even better because everyone doubted us before the game. We knew that and to go out there and put a fight on like we did against a great team, yes, it's good.' Six of the best Ella Toone scored the second goal in England's 6-1 victory over Wales (Nick Potts/PA) Defending champions England cruised into the Euro 2025 quarter-finals with a 6-1 victory over tournament newcomers Wales, who bowed out of the competition in St Gallen. Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a 13th-minute penalty before Ella Toone doubled the scoring in the 21st minute before Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo made it 4-0 at the break. Beth Mead scored a fifth after the restart before Hannah Cain clawed one back with Wales' second-ever goal in a major tournament, but substitute Aggie Beever-Jones completed the scoring for an assured England, who will now face Sweden in Zurich on Thursday. Liverpool and Preston pay tribute to Diogo Jota Liverpool fans paid tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva during the club's pre-season friendly at Preston (Martin Rickett/PA) For seven minutes after the final whistle, Liverpool players and staff stood in front of their supporters at Preston as they chanted Diogo Jota's name. Sunday's pre-season friendly at Deepdale was originally envisaged as a day to kick-start preparations for Liverpool's Premier League title defence, but it played out as a memorial service for Jota and his brother Andre Silva, 10 days after they died in a car accident in Spain. On the pitch Liverpool eased to a 3-1 win through goals from Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, but thoughts of Jota and Silva remained at the forefront throughout the day. As Claudia Rose Maguire, wife of former Preston player Sean, sang Liverpool anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before kick-off, Preston captain Ben Whiteman walked the length of the pitch to lay a wreath in front of the visiting fans with the Bill Shankly Kop dominated by banners and scarves bearing Jota's name. Rasmus Hojlund sends Man Utd six-word message as Moise Kean deadline looms
Manchester United are weighing up a move for Moises Kean whilst his release clause remains live but Rasmus Hojlund is determined to prove himself at Old Trafford Rasmus Hojlund appears happy to be back in Manchester United training despite consistent talk of a move away as the Dane said on social media: "Hello. It's good to be back". The forward has struggled during his two years at Old Trafford, despite joining in a deal worth more than £70million back when Erik ten Hag was in charge. He's scored 26 times across his spell at the club, but looked increasingly bereft of confidence last term. He was always signed with an eye to his development, but he has not come on like many in Manchester had hoped. As a result a move away, potentially back to Italy has been rumoured. It is understood that Inter Milan are keen on the striker. Despite the noise surrounding his next move Hojlund looks happy to be back in action as he trained in the gym in front of the cameras. He is keen to prove himself at the Premier League giants. That hasn't stopped Ruben Amorim from eyeing up more firepower and, with Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling to produce the necessary goals, alternatives are being eyed with Moises Kean among them after scoring 19 times for Fiorentina. Kean has emerged as a possible target despite his forgettable experience in England previously with Everton. He was in stellar form for Fiorentina last term and can leave for a modest fee, but United could face competition from Saudi Arabia if they do choose to pursue him. The Italian will be allowed to leave the club for €52m (£45m) due to a clause that can be triggered until July 15. Al-Hilal currently appear most advanced as they look to raid Italy once again with Simone Inzaghi now in charge having left Inter to take the job. The likes of Victor Osimhen, Hugo Ekitike and Viktor Gyokeres have also been cited a possible targets, which underlines United's desire to land a prolific No 9 having experienced problems there in recent seasons. Behind the central striker Amorim is also looking for new arrivals. Matheus Cunha has joined from Wolves, but he remains the only new face as the club's recruitment hits a roadblock. There main target currently in Bryan Mbeumo but they've seen two bids rejected by Brentford as they dig their heels in over the player's valuation.
