10 GOP senators come out against latest Trump school funding cuts, saying they ‘will harm students'

Yahoo17-07-2025
A group of 10 GOP senators penned a letter to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on Wednesday condemning a pause in funding for after-school and summer activities that has thrown schools and programs into chaos.
The Republicans urged OMB Director Russell Vought to resume the $6 billion in funding, saying the pause, which is also the subject of a Democratic-backed lawsuit, will 'harm students, families and local economies.'
The letter says the funding pause goes against the Trump administration's directive to send education back to the states.
'This funding goes directly to state and local districts, where local leaders decide how the funding is spent, because as we know, local communities know how to best serve students and families,' the letter reads.
It was signed by GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Susan Collins (Maine), Mitch McConnell (Ky.), Mike Rounds (S.D.), Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), John Boozman (Ark.), Katie Britt (Ala.), Deb Fischer (Neb.), John Hoeven (N.D.) and Jim Justice (W.Va.).
The Trump administration said it has held these funds due to concerns the money is going to 'woke' or left-wing agendas.
While the senators say they 'share' the administration's fears of 'taxpayer money going to fund radical left-wing programs,' they protest the idea that this funding is part of such efforts.
'These funds go to support programs that enjoy longstanding, bipartisan support,' the Republicans said, highlighting how the money goes toward children's programs while parents work and adult learners attend educational programs.
The senators said they believe they and the White House 'share the same goal' and encouraged a reversal of the decision.
The Hill has reached out to the OMB for comment.
The letter comes after two dozen Democratic states sued the administration over the pause as schools and other groups weigh if they will have to limit services or completely shut down certain programs without this funding.
'We have summer camps rolling right now. I'm depending on a reimbursement in July. … If we don't get that, we have kids who won't be served,' Kim Evans, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Augusta in Georgia, previously told The Hill.

Pennsylvania Skill, powered by Pace-O-Matic, applauds PA Gaming Control Board and casinos on record-breaking $6.4 billion revenue in 2024/2025 fiscal year

Even with their financial gains, casinos continue their unjustified attack on skill games HARRISBURG, PA, July 24, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pace-O-Matic, the developer of legal Pennsylvania Skill games, congratulated the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) and state casinos on breaking all records with $6.4 billion in revenue during the 2024/2025 fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2025. The revenue comes from slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests, and video gaming terminals (VGTs). As the PGCB and casinos celebrate an unprecedented 12-month financial win, small businesses, veteran groups, volunteer fire companies, and other fraternal clubs in Pennsylvania are also praising the supplemental income they receive from operating legal skill games. Many would need to make difficult economic decisions without the revenue. 'Pennsylvania casinos continue to break revenue records, which is great news for the commonwealth,' said Mike Barley, chief public affairs officer for Pace-O-Matic (POM). 'It is also more than proof that no competition exists between casinos and the small businesses and fraternal organizations that provide skill games to their customers." The state numbers show incredible growth in internet gambling in the state. While some casinos saw their brick-and-mortar revenue decline, it has clearly shifted to online gambling. The 2024/2025 internet gaming revenue totaled $2.47 billion, a 27% increase from the revenue during the 2023/2024 fiscal year. POM supports fair regulation and taxation of skill games, specifically through the passage of legislation sponsored by Sen. Gene Yaw. His Senate Bill 626 would generate $300 million in annual tax revenue. However, a competing proposal, Senate Bill 756 - supported by casinos - poses a real threat to small businesses and other groups that rely on skill game revenue. This bill imposes a crushing 40% effective tax, when including all fees, and introduces operational restrictions that could prevent many establishments from offering skill games. This would harm many businesses and nonprofit organizations and would mean a drop in the expected state tax revenue. 'Instead of trying to work with us, casinos have focused for years on unsuccessful legislation and legal challenges seeking an outright ban on skill games,' said Barley. 'The worst part is that their efforts, if successful, will kill small businesses, American Legions, VFWs, Moose Lodges, and many other places that count on skill games.' There is no question about the legality of the games. Several courts have ruled that Pennsylvania Skill games are legal, including a unanimous Commonwealth Court. The games also provide jobs in the state, in part because they are manufactured in Williamsport. In addition, over 90% of the income they generate stays within the local economy or the state. Most Americans support legal access to abortions in most cases: Survey

Most Americans still support legal abortions despite a wave of rollbacks following the Supreme Court's decision overturning the federal right to access the procedure over three years ago, a new survey shows. The AP-NORC Research Center poll, published Thursday, revealed that 64 percent of participants said abortion should be legal in all or most cases. About 27 percent of people said the procedure should be illegal in most cases and 9 percent said it should be illegal in all cases. The results were split along party lines. A majority of Democrats, 85 percent, and independents, 67 percent, said they believe abortion should be lawfully permitted in cases of medically terminated pregnancies and use of an abortion pill. On the opposite side, 15 percent of Democrats and 33 percent of independents disagreed, according to the survey. More than half, 58 percent, of Republicans said abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, while 41 percent of GOP respondents shared an opposite view. The poll also found that an overwhelming majority of respondents, regardless of their political party, said abortions should be allowed if the mother's health is at risk due to pregnancy or in the case of rape, incest or potential fetal abnormality. As states reflect on the impact of the 2022 Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health case — which overturned Roe v. Wade — the survey asked in which cases should medical abortions should be approved. Around 70 percent said abortions, which have increased since the landmark ruling, should be allowed in cases of maternal medical emergencies. A small majority, 56 percent, also said mothers should be permitted to travel to obtain an abortion in a different state if it's illegal where they reside. The AP-NORC poll was conducted from July 10-14 featuring 1,437 U.S. adults. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Curtis Sliwa finally gets sit-down with NYC business leaders as mayor race heats up

The business community is finally opening its doors to GOP NYC mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa – but will it open its wallets? Following my Sunday column in the Post on Sliwa's surprising strength in recent polling, and how business leaders are ignoring him, the NYC Partnership scheduled a meeting with the Guardian Angels founder on Thursday morning, On The Money has learned. The meeting at Partnership offices in Battery Park Plaza will be led by the group's chief, Kathy Wylde, though it's unclear how many business leaders will actually attend as most of the city's fat-cat class start to pick sides between current Mayor Eric Adams and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. 3 The NYC Partnership is meeting with Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. 'Because of you and your column I will be meeting with Kathryn Wylde today and her group,' Sliwa said in a text message, adding that he won't be wearing his trade-mark red Guardian Angels beret today amid criticisms that his sartorial flair often detracts from his message. That message will offer a heavy dose of crime-fighting to support big business and small businesses alike, tax cuts and slashing the city's massive bureaucracy – including in the Education Department, which does a lousy job teaching basic skills but employs swaths of needless administrators. Wylde declined to comment, but these are all issues that should appeal to business types, who have for years complained about high taxes and regulations, and since the tenure of former left-wing Mayor Bill de Blasio floundering quality of life issues like rising crime. Their fears have been compounded by the rise of Zohran Mamdani, the uber-leftist (some would say communist) assemblyman from Queens who recently beat Cuomo in the city Democratic mayoral primary and is now the favorite to win the general election in November. 3 Uber-leftist is now the favorite to win the general election in November. / MEGA Sliwa will be accompanied by Ed Cox, chairman of the New York State Republican Party and some staffers of conservative Democratic City Councilman Robert Holden, whom Sliwa has said would hold a position in his administration if he is elected. The sit-down comes as Sliwa's appeal grows. A recent HarrisX poll put him in a statistical tie with Mandami (26%) and Cuomo (23%) in a four-way race, according to the margin of error. Sliwa's 22% share easily beat Adams (13%), the poll found. 3 The sit-down comes as Sliwa's appeal grows. A recent HarrisX poll put him in a statistical tie with Mandami (26%) and Cuomo (23%) in a four-way race. Yet, Sliwa has raised just $169,000 in the last reporting period, compared with $1.5 million for Adams. Mamdani — who met with the Partnership last week — has spoken about government takeovers of grocery stores, defunding the police and wouldn't denounce the left-wing rally cry of 'globalizing the intifada' despite its anti semitic overtones. Business leaders expressed a high degree of skepticism after listening to him address questions on those issues. That said, they have yet to fully coalesce behind either Adams or Cuomo, who bring their own baggage to the race. Adams' tenure as mayor has been marred by significant corruption scandals. Cuomo was forced to resign as governor in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations that he has denied and were never prosecuted. Sliwa brings different baggage. He has never held elected office (he lost handily to Adams four years ago running as a Republican). He is best known for his decades of work leading the Guardian Angels, a crime-fighting organization that made its name in the 1980s patrolling NYC's crime-ridden subway system.
