AMMAN — The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) on Thursday discussed the latest developments in Sheikh Sabah Port Natural Gas Development Project and its gasification facility, which would secure natural gas in the southern industrial zone in Aqaba.
During a meeting held in Aqaba, ASEZA Chairman Nayef Fayez discussed with Minister of Energy Saleh Kharabsheh and the ministry's technical team ways to boost cooperation regarding the multi-use liquids port, which aims to increase "efficiency" for this sector, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
They also went over mechanisms for implementing natural gas projects in the southern region.
Talks during the meeting discussed the role of the National Water Carrier Project and importance of expediting its completion, as "one of the Kingdom's most vital" projects, which contributes to desalination of the Gulf of Aqaba water and requires providing technical solutions for pumping water through the carrier's routes.
Discussions also went over the importance of establishing facilities to meet current and future demand for imported petroleum derivatives and liquefied petroleum gas.
This effort will contribute to reducing industrial production costs by using natural gas, enhancing "competitiveness" of Jordanian products domestically and internationally, and "positively" boosting job creation and expansion of the export base to new markets and products, Petra said.
Held as part of the framework of implementing the government's strategy, in cooperation with ASEZA, the meeting sought to fulfil obligations towards investors and achieve the Kingdom's vision to supply "major" investment projects with liquefied natural gas across various sectors.

U.S. customs tariffs give Jordan 'competitive' edge-Minister

Ammon News - Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub Qudah said additional U.S. customs tariffs have given Jordan "a competitive" advantage. The minister noted when 15% duties are imposed on Jordan, other countries competing in the U.S. market face higher rates, which enhances the "competitive" advantage of Jordanian products. In a statement to Al Mamlaka TV Friday evening, he stated Jordan has entered into negotiations with the United States over the past few months and obtained the lowest rate of customs duty increases globally that have free trade agreements with the United States or with a trade surplus. The Jordan-U.S. free trade agreement provided this "preferential advantage," he said, indicating that the customs duties imposed on most countries across the world ranged between 15%-40%, while Jordan obtained the lowest rate. Qudah indicated that the tariffs previously imposed on Jordan were "zero" and are now 15%. For other countries, the new tariffs are added to the previous duties, which has "clearly made a positive difference in Jordan's favor in many sectors and has contributed to enhancing its competitiveness."

US tariff adjustments enhance Jordan's export competitiveness — minister

AMMAN — The US' recent decision to impose additional customs duties had given Jordan a competitive edge in the American market, according to Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply Yarub Qudah. Qudah said that while Jordanian exports were subject to a 15 per cent tariff, it remains significantly lower than the tariffs imposed on other competing countries, boosting the relative competitiveness of Jordanian products, according to Al Mamlaka TV. Over the past few months, Jordan had engaged in negotiations with Washington, ultimately securing the lowest tariff increase among countries with free trade agreements or trade surpluses with the US, Qudah said. The minister also emphasised that Jordan's Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US was crucial in securing this preferential treatment, with Jordan's tariff rate capped at the lowest level, while other countries face tariffs ranging from 15 to 40 per cent. Qudah also said "The new 15 per cent tariff would be applied on top of existing duties. However, because Jordan previously enjoyed zero tariffs under the FTA, the full 15 per cent now applies, still more favourable than the compounded tariffs faced by other countries." He added that this tariff difference provides Jordanian exporters with a clear competitive advantage across multiple sectors in the US market.
