Struggling with gallbladder stones? These 5 expert-recommended foods can in ease pain, and improve digestive health

Time of India5 days ago

In an optimal digestion and overall well-being especially for individuals who are prone to gallstones or digestive discomfort; maintaining gallbladder health plays an important role.
The medical management remains crucial for severe cases emerging research and clinical insights which states that maintaining a good diet plays significant role in managing gallbladder function and preventing complications.
On June 10, nutritionist Olivia Haas, a specialist in gallbladder and fatty liver health, recently shared advice on social media platforms, Instagram; how dietary changes can help you reduce pain, dissolve gallstones and promote better bite flow.
She emphasised the power of food and dietary changes as the first line of defense for gallbladder support.
How diet plays an important role in gallbladder function
The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, a digestive fluid that emulsifies fats and aids nutrient absorption. When bile becomes thick or sluggish, it can form stones, trigger inflammation, and impair fat digestion. According to Haas, a well-balanced diet rich in certain nutrients can help prevent bile stagnation and reduce gallbladder-related symptoms such as cramping, bloating, or post-meal discomfort.
'Want to save your gallbladder? Start with your plate,' Haas noted. 'These five foods naturally support bile flow, reduce inflammation, and help your gallbladder function more efficiently.'
She also emphasised the importance of seeking medical advice for personalised treatment plans and gallstone management.
From beetroot to citrus fruits: Foods that naturally support gallbladder-related problems
1. Beetroots
Beetroots or beets are rich in betalains and nitrates, compounds which support liver detoxification and improve bile viscosity. According to Haas, beets help 'thin sluggish bile,' which is essential for preventing bile stasis and stone formation.
Beetroots also assist in methylation, a critical metabolic process that regulates gene expression, liver health, and detoxification.
How to use: Add steamed or roasted beets to salads, juices, or smoothies.
2. Dandelion Greens
Dandelion greens are a bitter leafy vegetable traditionally used to stimulate bile production. Their bitter compounds activate taste receptors and prompt the liver to release more bile.
For beginners, Haas recommends starting with dandelion root or leaf tea. Those accustomed to bitter flavors can also toss fresh arugula or dandelion leaves into salads. Dandelion supports both the liver and gallbladder, helping to relieve digestion-related discomfort and bloating.
3. Artichokes
Artichokes contain cynarin, a compound shown to increase bile secretion and enhance fat metabolism. By improving fat digestion, artichokes help reduce the workload on the gallbladder and support efficient lipid absorption.
They also contain prebiotics, which aid gut health and reduce inflammation.
Best use: Steamed or grilled with olive oil and lemon as a digestive-friendly side.
4. Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits especially lemon, lime, and grapefruit are rich in vitamin C and citric acid, which contribute to liver detoxification and improved bile composition.
Regular consumption of citrus can help maintain the fluidity of bile, reduce sludge formation, and enhance fat emulsification.
Tip: Add fresh lemon or lime to water, salads, or herbal teas. Grapefruit can be consumed as a morning fruit, though it should be avoided with certain medications.
5. Soluble fibre
High-soluble fibre foods such as beans, lentils, oats, and fibre supplements like PHGG (Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum) or acacia fibre assist the body in binding bile-bound toxins and excreting them via the digestive tract.
Fibre also improves bowel regularity, which is essential for preventing bile recirculation and promoting overall digestive efficiency.
Daily recommendation: Aim for at least one tablespoon of soluble fibre-rich food per major meal.
Food as medicine: Olivia Haas's gallbladder-friendly diet strategy
Gallbladder issues, while often underestimated, can be profoundly influenced by dietary choices. Olivia Haas's practical advice offers a food-first approach that empowers individuals to manage gallbladder health with simple, natural strategies. As per the nutritionist advice on Instagram: Whether you are trying to prevent future issues or manage existing symptoms, incorporating beets, dandelion greens, artichokes, citrus fruits, and soluble fibre into your routine may offer substantial benefits.

Fitness Influencer Paralysed By Tick Bite, Now Battling To Walk Again

Maria Palen, a fitness influencer from California, is learning to walk again after a rare illness caused partial paralysis and turned her life upside down. Palen first revealed her health struggle in a September 2024 Instagram post, where she described how a sudden and mysterious illness left her bedridden. In December, she reported some signs of improvement, such as regaining minimal movement in one leg and the ability to take small steps. Her condition began with minor aches and pains that slowly worsened. By March 2024, she had lost 20 pounds and was no longer able to function normally. "It felt like my body completely gave up on me," she said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by maria (@planthlete_maria) Doctors initially suspected an autoimmune disease, but later discovered that Palen had contracted Babesiosis, a rare and potentially serious illness caused by parasites transmitted through tick bites. These parasites attacked her red blood cells and severely weakened her immune system. Palen described experiencing extreme pain from everyday tasks like using her phone or turning a steering wheel. Her condition deteriorated rapidly in October 2024 after she began feeling feverish and weak. While hospitalised, she became paralysed from the waist down. Tests revealed high white blood cell levels in her spinal fluid, indicating inflammation or infection affecting her spinal cord. Though her doctors were unable to give a clear diagnosis, Palen believes her symptoms may be connected to Lyme disease. She was treated with antibiotics, which helped clear the infection, but the nerve damage had already been done. Palen now lives with her family in Texas after losing her apartment and career. A GoFundMe campaign launched in January has raised over $12,000 to support her recovery. Doctors have given her a one-in-three chance for full, partial, or no recovery. Despite the uncertainty, Palen remains hopeful. "I have to be optimistic. If not, I would mentally spiral," she said. Her goal is to fully walk again, and she continues daily rehabilitation.

Indian CEO's ‘Your Heart Isn't A Machine' Post From Hospital Bed Backfires

Harsh Macwan took to Instagram and shared a picture of himself from the hospital bed, which left the internet divided. Recent years have witnessed a significant rise in heart attack cases, particularly among younger adults. Several factors have contributed to this increase, including lifestyle changes, stress, a poor diet, and a lack of exercise. An Indian CEO recently shed light on such health scares, sharing the near-cardiac incident that left him highly concerned. Harsh Macwan, an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, recently took to Instagram and shared how he recently 'came dangerously close to something" that led him to the hospital in just a few minutes. In what appears to be an attempt to caution fellow users about the health scare associated with today's fast-paced life, it eventually didn't sit well with everyone. Macwan shared his post, which featured a picture of himself in the hospital bed, now going viral for all the wrong reasons. 'It started with a sharp, crushing pressure in my chest. My left arm went numb. I was breathless, sweating, and disoriented. Within minutes, I was rushed to the hospital. What followed were ECGs and constant monitoring. I've always been the type to push through deadlines, fatigue, and stress. But this time, my body said enough," the CEO wrote in the caption. Further in the post, he urged young founders and leaders to prioritise their health over any startup, client, or ambition. 'Your heart isn't a machine. Take that day off. Sleep. Walk. Switch off your phone. Because when your body gives you a final warning, you won't get to reschedule it," he continued. While Macwan expressed that he is currently recovering, his post received warm reactions on the handle. Many of his followers expressed concern, asking him to take care and get proper rest. One wrote, 'Sending good vibes. Take care," while another added, 'Rightly said… Take care and proper rest." 'Feel better soon," another comment read. On the contrary, the post also grabbed the attention of a Reddit user who reshared the picture and took a jibe with, 'Take a pic, I'm going to post about this to help other founders – Heart Attack LinkedIn Survivor." Further in his post, the user described it as a 'haul of fame of craziest posts," asking people to save themselves. Many others also resonated with the remark, as they too joined in to call out the sharing of the picture. One wrote, 'No, no, take another picture—I don't look pathetic enough yet!!" while another added, 'Cannot wait to have a heart attack to post it on LinkedIn! So exciting!!!" 'The weird thing here is a posed hospital selfie. He's not the only guilty one – but unless it's a posed 'I just gave birth and this is our first family photo" then it's odd. Hope the dude is on the mend now," a user continued. Nonetheless, amid the criticism and well-wishes, the CEO's post does draw attention to the need for working professionals to focus on their lifestyle and health concerns.
