Justice Nagamohan Das submits report, proposes 6.6% internal quota for SC (Left)
Bengaluru: The Justice HN Nagmohan Das Committee on internal reservation among Scheduled Castes (SCs) submitted its final report to the govt Monday, marking a key step in the state's move to rationalise SC quotas based on empirical report, which contains six major recommendations, was formally received by chief minister Siddaramaiah and will be placed before the cabinet on Thursday for further consideration. Sources say the report recommends an allocation of 6.5% for SC (Left), 5.5% for SC (Right), 4% for 'untouchables', and 1% for other nomadic Das told TOI that since there was no reliable data on SC sub-castes, the commission undertook a fresh state-wide survey. This data forms the basis of the panel's recommendations."The govt agreed to our interim recommendation of having a fresh SC survey which was held between May 5 to July 6," Justice Das said. "The survey was conducted across 27.2 lakh families and just over 1 crore people. We have done our job and the govt is vested with our report to take further action."He also pointed out that his earlier report had suggested raising the overall SC quota in Karnataka from 15% to 17%, and this premise has also influenced the internal reservation framework recommended now."The 30-year-long struggle of communities seeking internal reservation came to a head when the Supreme Court on Aug 1, 2024 said providing internal reservation is permissible under the Constitution," Justice Das response to the Supreme Court's ruling, the Siddaramaiah govt, in Jan, formed a single-member commission headed by Justice Das. An interim report was submitted on March 27. The idea of internal reservation had also found traction during the previous BJP govt, which in Oct 2022, had proposed a similar matrix — 6% for SC (Left), 5.5% for SC (Right), 4.5% for 'touchables', and 1% for smaller final report submitted on Monday spans 1,766 pages and includes the panel's findings, the survey data, and supporting appendices.

BJP accuses Rahul Gandhi of making ‘immature' comments against Armed Forces
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday stated that Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's credibility is at stake, citing the Supreme Court's remarks during the hearing of a criminal defamation case related to his December 2022 comments on Indo-China border tensions. At a press conference, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said: 'Such immature, anti-Army, and demoralising statements made without any evidence or facts, especially when our Army was engaged in the Galwan incident, raise serious questions. Why does Rahul Gandhi make such statements? This is a big question. And it is a question about his credibility.' 'The question arises: Does India deserve a more responsible and better Leader of Opposition? As a Leader of the Opposition, who has taken an oath under the Constitution to safeguard the sovereignty of our country, is he destroying that very sovereignty? ...is he helping the nations which are inimical to our country? Is he demoralising the brave Indian armed forces?' the BJP leader asked. Quoting the Supreme Court's remarks, Mr. Bhatia alleged that this was not the first time Mr. Gandhi had displayed 'such an anti-India' mindset. He referred to another defamation case involving comments by the Congress leader about V.D. Savarkar. 'We all know that the commission-hungry Congress failed to procure Rafale jets for 10 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made sure that the Air Force received these aircraft. Displaying similar immaturity, Rahul Gandhi used inappropriate language for the Prime Minister. Subsequently, the Supreme Court's decision affirmed that the addition of Rafale jets strengthened the Air Force and was in India's national interest,' Mr. Bhatia added.

Seeman restrained from making defamatory remarks on DIG
Chennai: Madras high court has restrained Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator, Seeman , from making defamatory statements against deputy inspector-general of police Varun Kumar. Justice K Kumaresh Babu issued the interim order on a civil suit filed by Varun Kumar against Seeman. Varun Kumar contended that Seeman began a personal tirade against him ever since he acted against an NTK member, 'Sattai' Duraimurugan. Duraimurugan was arrested by Tiruvallur district police for causing a law-and-order issue due to a false claim on his YouTube channel about the death of Foxconn factory workers from food poisoning. He was also detained under the Goondas Act, Varun Kumar said. At that time, he was serving as superintendent of police at Tiruvallur district. Following Duraimurugan's arrest, Seeman developed animosity towards him, the officer stated. He added that Seeman had been making disparaging remarks against him in the media since then. Seeman termed him a 'beggar' and sullied the image of the entire police force in the country by saying he was 'after all an IPS officer'.
