Dakota State women gear up for NAIA National Tournament

Yahoo13-03-2025
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Dakota State women are back in the NAIA National Tournament for the fifth straight season and just like last year, the Trojans won't have to travel for their opening round games.
DSU began their postseason by winning the North Star Athletic Association Championship, with a 65-59 win over Jamestown.
'I just think it gives us a lot of momentum going into the postseason here. We have some really tough teams in our conference. We've had a lot of battles this season and solidifying that win meant everything,' DSU junior Tabor Teel said. 'We work really hard for moments like this and it solidifies that it's all worth it.'
The Trojans enter the national tournament with a 24-4 record, their best mark in four seasons. However, success on the court isn't the main focus for DSU.
'Our program is about way more than just putting a ball in the basket. It's about teaching life lessons that we can carry far past basketball,' DSU head coach David Moe said. 'I've been very fortunate to have amazing people in the program who have bought into that culture.'
The first two rounds of the NAIA National Tournament are played at various locations. In the last five years, Dakota State has traveled to Nebraska, Montana and Kansas. However, just like last season, DSU will be a host site this year.
'Getting more people to come to Madison and feel what makes Madison so special, the people, I think is one of the coolest things in the world,' Moe said. 'We feel very honored to be able to host.'
DSU is hoping for a long run in this year's tournament and they'll keep their focus on playing Trojan basketball.
'We're an incredibly hard team to scout. Anyone of us can score 20 points. Anyone of us could get ten rebounds,' DSU senior Angela Slattery said.
'We're going to stay true to who we are. We're going to stay true to our identity on the floor, which is to be fast, free and fun,' Moe said. 'We're going to pick up full court. We're going to trap and run around. That's how we play.'
DSU will host Montana Tech in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament on Friday night at 5:30.
OTHER LOCAL NAIA TEAMS
Here's a look at the other local teams in action on Friday.
Dordt is another host site and they'll host Haskell in the first round. Dakota Wesleyan will play in Oklahoma against The Master's and Northwestern will cross paths with MidAmerica Nazarene in Kansas on Friday night.

USC football countdown to kickoff—Cameron Smith in focus

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 35 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at former USC linebacker Cameron Smith. Position: Linebacker Years played at USC: 2015-2018 Career highlights: As a true freshman in 2015, Smith burst onto the scene with a three-interception game against Utah, one of which he returned for a pick six. Funnily enough, however, those would be the only three interceptions Smith would record in his entire USC career. Despite this, he still had an exceptional tenure in Cardinal and Gold, finishing his time with the Trojans with 353 total tackles, 11 passes defended, and 3.5 sacks. Smith earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2017 and second-team honors in both 2016 and 2018. In both his junior and seniors seasons, he was named a team captain. After USC: The Minnesota Vikings selected Smith in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he appeared in five regular season games, recording eight total tackles. During the summer of 2020, however, it was announced that Smith would need to undergo open heart surgery, causing him to miss the entire season. He medically retired from football the following year. Lincoln Riley believes this year's Trojans have what it takes

The USC Trojans had a disappointing start to their tenure in the Big Ten last season. They finished 7-6 overall and had an abysmal 4-5 record in the conference. This was not the usual success we were accustomed to seeing from USC, even though the Trojans are in the Big Ten, the best conference in college football. The expectations were still higher. Lincoln Riley is confident with what he has in the building. He believes that this year will be different. Adrian Medina with the Sporting Tribune broke down Riley's recent comments on USC's depth this season. "Trojans Head Coach Lincoln Riley, entering his fourth year at USC, was confident about the team's sufficiency of depth and support during this year's Big 10 Media Day. It's very apparent that USC is extremely serious about making this football program and returning it back to being one of the greats of college football," Riley said in his opening statement at the podium. "With our current team, seeing how our roster has evolved on all sides, especially defensively, after the huge improvements that we've made a year ago. The championship-caliber depth that is starting to be established all across the board is something that we have all worked hard for." The Trojans have a better coaching staff now with the addition of former NFL defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. They also have a more experienced roster this season. Out of their 68 players, 44 of them saw some action last season, and 17 Trojans got a chance to start. That is the experience needed to help the Trojans be a more competitive team this season in the Big Ten. They can mix in the talented freshmen and transfers they have acquired. It is notable to see Lincoln Riley have confidence in the team he is fielding this year, but now the talk needs to turn into action and results.
