An investigation into the seizure of 108 kg marijuana (ganja) worth Rs 27 lakh last week has found out that a packers-and-movers transporter, Avinash Dhoke, had brought the narcotics consignment concealed in household goods of an innocent bank manager, who had been transferred from Odisha to Nagpur, reported ToI.The consignment was intercepted by Kalamna police after a dramatic chase on June 3. It has affected the bank manager's shifting plan as his household goods have been impounded as evidence. However, the police have promised to legally sort out the issue.A Kalamna police team, led by senior inspector Praveen Kale under Zonal DCP Niketan Kadam, travelled about 700 km from Nagpur to a remote Odisha village to nab the key supplier, Bulbul Pradhan, alias 'WhatsApp Bhai'. The police waited in a trap set for him for more than 24 hours. Pradhan belongs to a family of drug mafia. His elder brother is part of an interstate racket with a nationwide network.The mission to bust the drug cartel was done by Nagpur CP Ravinder Singal's crackdown on narcotics 'Operation Thunder', which has unearthed a new nationwide modus operandi of using movers and packers to transport narcotics across India.ToI sources said Dhoke, 34, was supposed to deliver the bank manager's belongings to the official's new address in Nagpur. However, Dhoke's driver took a detour of about 250 km to pick up the consignment from Pradhan, who was waiting at a location on the Sambalpur highway. The driver had been promised Rs 1,000 per kg ganja or Rs1 lakh as his share in profits.Dhoke was supposed to deliver to consignment to Palash Wankhede. He managed to keep the tightly packed, dried marijuana herbs in a few sacks under the bank manager's household belongings, furniture, beds, and electronic gadgets. Wankhede is now behind bars along with Dhoke.Dhoke managed to dodge numerous checkpoints, nakabandis, toll nakas, RTO check posts, and highway police by furnishing the receipt of the payment made by the bank manager for shifting his belongings from the Odisha-West Bengal border to an interior village of Odisha, and then to Nagpur in Maharashtra via Raipur in Chhattisgarh.Sources from Kalamna police told ToI that Dhoke was working for Wankhede for quite some time but has refused to reveal further details during interrogation.(With ToI inputs)

Students had reportedly noticed pieces of plaster and pebbles falling from the ceiling minutes before the incident. According to student survivors, their warnings to the teachers were dismissed. This has raised fresh concerns about the safety of public infrastructure and the negligence in maintaining school buildings. 'We saw pebbles falling and told our teacher, but we were asked to sit quietly. Then the roof just came down,' said a Class 8 student who narrowly survived. Aazad criticized the state's education and PWD departments for failing to act despite red flags. He urged that not only should there be a judicial probe, but also accountability fixed on officials responsible for ignoring the warnings. Political leaders and civil society groups have echoed the demand for justice, as families mourn their loss. Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Bhajanlal Sharma, visited the site and met with grieving families. He announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh per deceased student's family, a contractual government job to one family member, and a promise to rebuild the school with classrooms named in memory of the victims, reported The Hindu.

Delhi Police arrests businessmans cook from Odisha for stealing money
Balasore, Jul 28 (PTI) Delhi Police arrested a man from Odisha's Balasore district who, along with his two associates, had stolen over Rs 1 crore from the house of a businessman in the national capital, an officer said on Monday. Delhi Police, with the help of Odisha Police, arrested Kashinath Mallick (30) from Bhimei Gaon under Iswarpur police outpost in Nilagiri area of Balasore district on Sunday and recovered Rs 20 lakh, the officer said. Mallick used to work as a cook in the house of the businessman. His two other associates used to work as domestic help, and separately, they had stolen Rs 1.10 crore from the businessman's house and had fled Delhi recently. While Mallick was arrested from his house in Balasore district, the other two, identified as Ashutosh Mallick (27) and Jagabandhu Mallick (30), were arrested from Delhi railway station and Patna Bus stand, respectively. Woman sub-inspector, 2 other cops among 5 arrested for taking Rs 20 lakh bribe in Delhi
The Delhi Police Sunday arrested a woman sub-inspector, two of her subordinates, and two civilians for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a complainant, an officer said. According to the police, Sub-Inspector Neetu Bhist, posted at Paschim Vihar East police station, was caught red-handed on the station's premises after the Outer District police laid a trap on the request of the complainant. The two other police personnel arrested include a head constable and a constable. A senior police officer said the process to suspend the accused officers will be initiated as soon as the preliminary inquiry is complete. Officers said the complainant, who runs an educational consulting firm, told them that he was in his office on Saturday when a police officer from Paschim Vihar East station arrived and accused him of running his business illegally. The complainant was then forced to board an SUV and taken to a police booth in Peera Garhi. The complainant alleged that the police personnel asked him for Rs 50 lakh, and the sub-inspector called him and threatened dire consequences if he lodged a complaint. Officers added that the two civilians arrested were known to the complainant, and they had forced him to sign two cheques to 'settle' the matter with the police. After negotiations, the complainant allegedly agreed to pay Rs 20 lakh as the first instalment. Investigators are now probing the role of the Station House Officer (SHO) of Paschim Vihar East police station in the incident as one of accused civilians, Ajay Kashyap, is often seen frequenting the station. In June this year, the Vigilance Department of the Delhi Police caught a head constable taking a bribe of Rs 25,000 at Burari police station. The accused subsequently suffered chest pain and was rushed to a hospital nearby. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, the Delhi Police have arrested at least 10 of its officers for taking bribes. This includes officers of inspector and sub-inspector ranks, public records show.
