Potholes, lack of lights, poor drainage affect vital city road
With monsoon, the potholes have transformed into craters filled with rainwater, creating confusion and danger for commuters. "The road was repaired just before monsoon, but it's back to square one now. It's very difficult to ride through the potholes, and minor accidents have become a regular affair," said Tapan Jena, a local shopkeeper.
The 4-km stretch houses several educational institutes and small industries, and serves as a key route for heavy vehicles and traffic heading to railway station.
Lack of a proper drainage system compounds the problem, with rainwater flooding parts of the road. "The drainage system is poor throughout the stretch. Drainage work is going on but it is yet to be completed," said Jagyaseni Mohapatra, a resident.
Lack of adequate street lighting further complicates matters. The 30-ft-wide road lacks a median, and street lights are installed only on one side of the road, leaving the other side in darkness.

"The road cuts right through the Mancheswar industrial estate. Vehicles of all kinds use the road daily. The inadequate street lights create a safety risk, especially for pedestrians and cyclists," said urban planner Dipu Nanda.
The width of the carriageway narrows and becomes uneven near the under-construction road overbridge at VSS Nagar, continuing to Mancheswar station and the level crossing. The unevenness adds to the challenges faced by commuters.
In response to the complaints, city mayor Sulochana Das said that efforts are underway to coordinate with Idco authorities to maintain civic services in the Mancheswar industrial estate. "Road repair work can be taken up during a 48-hour dry spell," she assured.
Das said that the installation of new street lights is in progress and will be completed soon. "New LED street lights are being installed on the other side of the road, and they will function very soon," she said.

Protest held against tying of LED string lights to trees in Mysuru
A protest march against the tying of LED string lights to trees was held in Kuvempunagar in Mysuru on Friday. The protest was organised by Voice of People, a voluntary organisation, in collaboration with Jyoti Education Institute, to save and protect the trees. About 150 students of the educational institute held aloft banners with messages to protect trees and environment, and took out a march in Kuvempunagar on Friday as part of the demonstration. President of Voice of People Vasant Rao Chavan in a statement here said that LED string lights were being tied to trees by driving iron nails into them at some places in Mysuru. 'The reason is to make their business area look attractive. However, no one here is imagining how much damage this will have on the trees,' he lamented. When the iron nails are driven into the trees, the nails rust in rainwater and toxic elements seep into the trees, thereby destroying the cambium layer that helps the trees to grow, he added. 'This causes the trees to dry up and fall,' said Mr. Chavan, while appealing to businesspersons against hurting trees in such a manner.

Every student to be a member of IIT taskforce
1 2 3 Kolkata: At IIT Kharagpur, all students will have the opportunity to be part of the hostel wing task force, with the institute deciding to make one in four students in each wing responsible for overseeing the other boarders. Since the wing task force will operate on a weekly rotational basis, all students in the hostel will have a chance to participate and be a member each month. TOI earlier reported that IIT Kharagpur authorities decided to set up a student-led task force at the wing level of every hostel. The idea is to make students vigilant of their peers and report any behavioural changes among other students to the hall council and hall management committee for speedy action. The institute has 21 hostels, 16 for boys and five for girls, accommodating over 16,000 students. Each hostel is divided into blocks, which are further divided into wings.
