‘Won't add to country's challenges': Punjab farmers skip plan to block rail tracks amid India-Pakistan tensions

The protest was announced by state president Sukhwinder Singh Sabhra and general secretary Rana Ranbir Singh.

Emphasising the farmers' commitment to national interest, another farmer leader, Jarmanjit Singh Bandala, said that the protesters gathered at Devidaspura on May 6 night to condemn the Punjab government, which they accuse of transforming the state into a "police state." He alleged, "For years, the govt has acted on the Centre's orders, deploying police to forcibly acquire land while subjecting resisting farmers, labourers, and women to arrests, lathi charges, and abuse.

Addressing the gathering, Pandher talked about the recent incidents, including alleged police crackdowns on farmer protests at Shambhu and other borders on March 19-20, and the high-handed response to a planned gherao of the Shambhu police station.
"The police arrested our people from various districts, using brute force to crush our democratic rights," he alleged.
He claimed a brief scuffle with police ensued, but the protesters halted near the tracks, clarifying they had no intention of blocking trains prematurely. In a significant move, they chose to relocate to a nearby ground, ensuring no disruption to rail services.
The farmer leaders also warned, saying, "The govt's use of police to suppress farmer organisations and harass their families must stop. If this continues, we will launch large-scale protests to end this oppression."

BMC plans hawker-free zones across all wards
Mumbai: A year after submitting a list of 20 hawker-free zones to Bombay HC, BMC is now planning to replicate the model across all civic wards. At a recent meeting, municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani directed ward officials to coordinate with local police and identify specific stretches that can be strictly monitored and kept free of illegal hawkers. These areas will be jointly supervised by civic and police staff to ensure consistent enforcement and pedestrian safety. It said it had to discontinue a valet parking initiative it had launched due to lack of official support. Citizen activist Nikhil Desai said effective action is possible if BMC and police work in coordination. Bihar's draft poll roll may exclude 66 lakh names: EC
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Sunday said Bihar's draft electoral roll may exclude 66 lakh names as they had either become electors in other states or UTs, were non-existent, did not submit enumeration forms within the July 25 deadline or were not willing to register as electors for some reason or other. Of the 66 lakh electors, 22 lakh were found to be deceased, 36 lakh permanently shifted or untraceable, and seven lakh enrolled at multiple places. Over one lakh did not return their forms by the deadline. "Exact status of these electors will be known after scrutiny of these Aug 1. However, genuine electors can still be added back in electoral rolls during the claims and objections period from Aug 1-Sept 1," EC said in a statement. It said the seven lakh electors found enrolled at multiple places will be retained in only one place. EC underlined that submission of over 7.2 crore forms by electors in Bihar pointed to their "overwhelming participation" in the special intensive revision (SIR) of rolls. HC dismisses petition for dependent pension under freedom fighter scheme
Hyderabad: Telangana high court has dismissed a writ petition seeking grant of arrears and dependent pension under the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension Scheme, 1980. The court ruled that no pension can be sanctioned after the death of a freedom fighter if it was not granted during their lifetime. Justice NV Shravan Kumar delivered the verdict while hearing a petition filed by the late freedom fighter More Rama Rao's daughter, More Vijaya Laxmi, from Warangal district. Vijaya Laxmi claimed that neither Rama Rao nor her mother, More Sushila, were granted freedom fighter's pension despite their applications. After their deaths, being unmarried and mentally ill, she applied for a family pension, which was still pending with the authorities. Further, in view of the 2014 guidelines, the court ruled that "no lifetime arrears or dependent pension shall be sanctioned to the spouse or daughter after the death of the freedom fighter" if the pension was not already approved, and dismissed Vijaya Laxmi's petition.
