Matthew Goode's 'Really Dark' Bond Pitch May Have Cost Him His 007 Audition — GeekTyrant
In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Emmy-nominated actor opened up about a meeting he had with longtime Bond producer Barbara Broccoli back in the early 2000s, right before the franchise's gritty reboot with Casino Royale.
'I didn't audition. I went in and met Barbara. I didn't get to the audition, but it was quite a funny one because — and she's gorgeous and just a lovely, lovely person.'
But the meeting took a turn when Broccoli asked Goode what his vision of Bond looked like and that's where he lost her:
'She was like, 'So what's your idea for Bond?' And I was like, 'My idea for Bond, we've gotta take it back to the books, you know? Really, we absolutely have to make this guy an alcoholic, a drug addict. He hates himself. He hates women. He hates a lot of people. He's in deep pain. He's brilliant at killing people.''
Goode laughed while recounting her silent reaction:
'I think by the end of the interview, she was like, 'Mhmm. Next.' Because I wanted to make it really dark… but what I should have said was, 'But also incredibly charming.''
Needless to say, Goode didn't move on to the audition phase. Instead, the role famously went to Daniel Craig, who brought a colder, more emotionally complex version of Bond to the screen starting with Casino Royale , and continued through No Time To Die.
Now, with Craig's era behind us, the franchise is again preparing for reinvention. It was recently confirmed that Dune and Sicario director Denis Villeneuve will helm the next installment for Amazon MGM Studios, working alongside producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are also joining as producers, with Tanya Lapointe executive producing.
Amazon MGM's Courtenay Valenti and Sue Kroll added during CinemaCon: 'We are committed to honoring the legacy of this iconic character, while bringing a fresh, exhilarating new chapter to audiences around the world alongside Amy and David.'
It's still unclear who will wear the tux next, but if Matthew Goode's version had gone through, we might've ended up with the darkest Bond yet.

Karlovy Vary Fest Has 'Potential Far Beyond Film Industry': Majority Owner Rockaway's Jan Jirovec
The 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) unspools July 4-12, with industry attendees and audiences descending on the Czech spa town to enjoy the newest cinematic discoveries and a slew of stars. Jan Jírovec is a board member of KVIFF Group and investment partner at Rockaway Capital, which has been the majority owner of the festival since 2021. More from The Hollywood Reporter Locarno Unveils Lineup for Pardi di Domani Section, Its "Breeding Ground for Experimentation" Meta Facing European Showdown on "Pay-or-Consent" Ad Model Bob Vylan Lose Visas, Dropped by UTA Following "Death to IDF" Chant at Glastonbury THR's Georg Szalai discussed with him how the film fest, which is expanding into TV series, fits into Rockaway's strategy, the impact of the recent death of long-term festival president Jiří Bartoška, and what lies ahead for KVIFF. What do you typically focus on for Rockaway when it comes to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival? Do you concentrate on longer-term, big-picture vision and strategy planning or also specific issues we may see in this year's edition? At Rockaway, and more specifically Rockaway Arts, our role is primarily strategic. We see the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival not only as a cultural institution but as a platform with long-term potential that reaches far beyond the film industry. In practical terms, Rockaway has actively supported initiatives such as the launch of or the push toward stronger European industry engagement, for example. We have also been actively involved in consultations regarding selected sponsorship opportunities. With the recent death of Jiří Bartoška, I wanted to ask how you think he made the KVIFF such a strong and beloved film festival brand? What made Jiří Bartoška unique was his ability to lead with authenticity. He didn't build a festival brand in the corporate sense. He and his team created a community, a cultural moment people wanted to return to every year. His charisma, intuition, and deep respect for art – combined with his ability to pick the right people and let them thrive – made KVIFF what it is today. That's why the position of president of the KVIFF will not be filled and remains in memoriam to him. Do you expect any change at KVIFF in terms of focus and strategy with executive director Kryštof Mucha also taking on a similar role as Jiří Bartoška, but with a different title, namely chairman of the board of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Group? It seems that most people feel that while Jiří Bartoška will never be replaceable, a strong and experienced team is in place. And Rockaway has promised to 'preserve the values and level of quality that its president built up over the years.' You're absolutely right – Jiří Bartoška is irreplaceable. But the strength of KVIFF has always been the team behind it. Kryštof Mucha, (artistic director) Karel Och, (head of production) Petr Lintimer and the rest of the leadership have been key to the festival's success for decades. They know the DNA of the festival inside out, and more importantly, they understand how to keep evolving it without losing what makes it special. We don't expect a radical change. Rather, we see continuity with a fresh perspective – a team that's deeply experienced, but still hungry to push boundaries. How much does Rockaway see and treat the film festival as a business beyond its status as a creative and artistic endeavor? And how does it fit into the broader Rockaway focus and strategy? KVIFF is first and foremost a cultural project – and we respect that. But we also believe that cultural initiatives can be run with strategic, long-term thinking. In that sense, KVIFF is a great example of how a creative institution can build a strong brand, attract global partners, and create tangible value for the region and for the Czech Republic as a whole. At Rockaway Arts, we're building a portfolio of assets that have cultural relevance, economic sustainability, and international potential. In that light, KVIFF is a perfect fit. You work across the Rockaway Arts division, which includes the film festival, music festival Colours of Ostrava, and design festival Designblok. Do these events ever cooperate or cross over in any way? They're different in content and audiences, but yes, there's synergy. Each of these events is rooted in a strong creative community, and we see value in mutual support. Whether it's through shared partners, talent exchanges, or even aligned communication strategies, we're exploring ways they can support each other while staying true to their own identities. The dialogue between music, design, and film is increasingly relevant – and we believe our role is to help that ecosystem grow organically. Steve Coogan explains why Keir Starmer has made him ‘admire' Margaret Thatcher
Steve Coogan has explained why Keir Starmer makes him 'admire' Margaret Thatcher. The actor and writer is a dyed-in-the-wool Labour supporter and has often used his bumbling comedy creation Alan Partridge – a longstanding Tory – to poke fun at the party's political rivals. However, Coogan, whose credits include cult comedy series The Trip and Jimmy Savile drama The Reckoning, is not a fan of the UK prime minister and, one year into Starmer's time in office, Coogan remains unconvinced by his performance. When asked about his opinions on the current state of Labour, Coogan said that Starmer lacks a purpose and that 'everything with him is just political'. 'I don't think he has any ideology,' Coogan told the i. 'I think every decision he makes is, 'What is the most politically expedient thing to say and think?'' Coogan contrasted Starmer's qualities with those of Thatcher, the controversial Conservative politician who was prime minister from 1979 to 1990. 'It makes me admire – which I never thought I'd say – Margaret Thatcher for at least having an ideology and a point of view,' he continued. 'And a vision. I didn't agree with it, but at least she had one.' Coogan added: '[Starmer] doesn't have one. So I am not an ally.' The Philomena star previously told LBC: 'I'm a Labour supporter, but I do despair of the risk free, be all things to all men, approach of Keir Starmer, which I think is a fool's errand and might work in the short term, but eventually bites you on the bum for down the line.' It was recently revealed that Coogan would reunite with Rob Brydon for a new series of The Trip, which will bring the duo to Scandinavia. Across six episodes, directed again by Michael Winterbottom (This England, 24 Hour Party People), Coogan and Brydon will explore the wildest riches of Northern Europe, including sculptural Swedish hotels and remote Norwegian fishing huts. 'I'm delighted that Michael Winterbottom has managed to persuade me at the age of 59 to join Rob, aged 60, to squeeze the last few drops of comedy from a bottle that we both thought was pretty much empty,' Coogan said of the forthcoming series.
