Stock Movers: Tesla Sales Tumble, Microsoft to Cut 9,000 Workers, Centene Plunges

Bloomberga day ago
On this episode of Stock Movers: Tesla Sales Tumble, Microsoft to Cut 9,000 Workers, Centene Plunges Tesla Inc.'s global sales tumbled for the second quarter in a row, leaving the carmaker in a deep hole to dig out from to avoid consecutive annual declines. The company delivered 384,122 vehicles during the last three months, down 13% from a year earlier. Tesla now has an almost 110,000-car deficit to overcome in the second half in order to return to growth this year. Sales did manage to exceed the most pessimistic analysts' estimates, with the most bearish projecting a more than 20% decline. Tesla shares rallied on the report, rising as much as 4% at the open of regular trading Wednesday. Microsoft Corp. began job cuts that will impact about 9,000 workers, a second major wave of layoffs this year as it seeks to control costs. Less than 4% of the company's total workforce will be impacted, a spokesperson said. The cuts will have an impact across teams, geographies and tenure and are made in an effort to streamline processes and reduce layers of management, the spokesperson said. Health insurer Centene Corp. shocked investors Tuesday when it withdrew its profit outlook on precipitously rising risks from Affordable Care Act plans, sending shares plummeting the most in almost two decades. The company appears to have been badly caught off guard by the impact of US government actions. It's an ominous sign for insurers, whose purpose is to price for risk but have lately been blindsided by it. Shares of Centene dropped as much as 35% in New York on Wednesday, the most since 2006.

China-Made Tesla Sales Rose in June. Is This the Lifeline TSLA Stock Needed?

Tesla (TSLA) shares are pushing to the upside on Wednesday after data from the China Passenger Car Association confirmed the automaker's sales of China-made electric vehicles increase 0.8% on a year-over-year basis in June. Though modest, the increase is significant given it snapped TSLA's eight-month losing streak in one of its biggest global markets. Despite today's gain, Tesla stock is down 13% versus its high set in the final week of May. Is UnitedHealth Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold for July 2025? While China data sure is positive for investors, it's not very likely to help Tesla shares extend gains further since the automaker's overall deliveries for the second quarter came in down 14% year-over-year on Wednesday. The company delivered just 384,122 vehicles in its fiscal Q2, down significantly from 443,956 deliveries in the same quarter last year – reinforcing concerns that TSLA is losing market share to its Chinese rivals. Tesla Inc has recently had a successful launch of robotaxi services in Austin, but it's still reasonable to assume that continued weakness in the core EV business will make it incrementally difficult for TSLA stock to print new highs in the near term. According to Steve Westly, a former member of Tesla's board, the EV maker needs three things to unlock its path to sustainable share price recovery. Tesla must launch a lower-cost ($25,000) model to compete more aggressively with rivals. Tesla needs regulatory approval for its robotaxi in multiple cities to catch up with Waymo. Tesla has to rebrand itself – which means less politics, more products, and lower prices. Westly remains confident that TSLA has the technology to compete across all verticals, but unless it 'finds a higher gear' – this EV stock may continue to fail in delivering the kind of gains that investors have come to expect of it, he told CNBC in an interview today. Investors should note that Wall Street firms are no longer bullish on Tesla stock either. According to Barchart, the consensus rating on TSLA shares currently sits at 'Hold' only with the mean target of about $297 indicating potential downside of some 5% from here. Nvidia stock just hit an all-time high. So could it still make sense to buy?

This year has been anything but boring so far for Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) shareholders. The Nvidia stock price has soared 66% in under two months to hit an all-time high in today's (3 July) US market session. That means that the chip company's stock now trades 1,572% higher than five years ago. That is the sort of return that would leave many investors laughing all the way to the bank. Looking at it, I wonder whether I am too late to start buying Nvidia stock now – or if it may move even higher in future. Let us begin with the current valuation. Nvidia stock is changing hands for 52 times earnings. That is definitely on the high side in my view of what constitutes value, even for a growth stock. In fact, that valuation alone means I am not willing to buy at the current price. However, while I think it is high, I do not think it is ridiculous. Some growth stocks trade on a three-figure P/E ratio. Tesla is an example – but Nvidia's short- to medium-term business growth prospects look better than Tesla's, in my view. One of the wildcards in all of this is Nvidia's earnings. Over the past five years, the company's basic earnings per share (EPS) have grown a staggering 2,700%. So, in one sense, Nvidia stock is actually cheaper now than it was five years back. Sure, the stock price has jumped 1,572%. But that is markedly lower than the growth in basic earnings per share. I see this as a wildcard because earnings movements are a critical factor in deciding what a fair share price might be. If Nvidia continues to grow EPS sharply – even at a far slower rate than before – its prospective P/E ratio could be far less than 52. Even the current share price could then turn out to be a long-term bargain. But what if recent earnings are a one-off blip due to high expenditure by firms on building AI infrastructure? Should that turn out to be the case – and there is a risk it will – the prospective P/E ratio could be much higher than 52. That may mean that Nvidia stock falls to a price far below its current record-setting level. Valuation is important because overpaying even for a great business can be a costly mistake. I see a lot to like about Nvidia. It is hugely profitable, has unique expertise, and proprietary designs, and is selling high-margin chips to a large installed customer base. I reckon that could mean the share moves even higher and of course I would like to benefit from that. But so I do not get carried away, I also need to feel comfortable with the margin of safety a share price offers me. Tariff disputes and growing competition are both risks to Nvidia's sales, alongside an unclear medium-term outlook for AI chip demand. So, at the current price, I am not willing to buy Nvidia stock. Why Cloudflare wants AI companies to pay for content

Cloudflare wants AI companies to pay up. The cloud infrastructure provider, which powers around 20% of the web, is launching a new experiment that would let publishers charge AI firms every time their bots scrape a site. It's called Pay per Crawl, and it could reshape how content is accessed and monetized online. Today on TechCrunch's Equity podcast, hosts Kirsten Korosec and Max Zeff dig into Cloudflare's big swing, why it's a natural next step after a year of laying groundwork for bot-blocking tools, and whether the plan to sit at the center of a pay-for-content protocol is genius…or just wishful thinking.
