Alexander Zverev considers therapy after shock Wimbledon exit

The Sun16 hours ago
ALEXANDER ZVEREV is contemplating therapy to address his mental health struggles following a stunning first-round exit at Wimbledon. The German third seed admitted feeling 'alone' and 'empty' after his shock defeat to France's Arthur Rinderknech.
Zverev, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, fell to the world number 72 in a gruelling five-set match lasting four hours and 40 minutes on Centre Court. The 28-year-old, who has struggled with consistency in recent months, described his emotional turmoil in a candid post-match press conference.
'It's funny, I feel very alone out there at times. I struggle mentally. I've been saying that since after the Australian Open,' Zverev said. 'I'm trying to find ways to kind of get out of this hole. I keep kind of finding myself back in it in a way.'
When asked if he would seek professional help, Zverev responded, 'Maybe for the first time in my life I'll probably need it.' He added, 'I've never felt this empty before. Just lacking joy, just lacking joy in everything that I do. It's not necessarily about tennis.'
Zverev, who reached the Australian Open final earlier this year, has now suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit since 2019. The match, which began on Monday evening, was suspended due to Wimbledon's curfew before resuming on Tuesday. Despite hitting 31 aces, Zverev could not overcome Rinderknech's resilience.
The German has never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon in nine attempts. His recent struggles come after off-court controversies, including dropped legal cases related to past allegations.

Madison Keys, Aryna Sabalenka avoid upsets at Wimbledon

SIXTH-SEEDED Madison Keys recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Olga Danilovic on Wednesday to advance to the third round at Wimbledon. After outlasting Elena-Gabriela Ruse in a grueling, three-set match in sweltering conditions on Monday, Keys needed just 75 minutes to dismiss her Serbian foe. "I definitely felt a little bit more comfortable today – it's the cloudy, rainy England that we know and love, so that helped a lot ... felt a little bit more normal out here today," Keys said during her on-court interview. Keys, who won the Australian Open earlier this year, fired three aces, had 19 winners and overcame seven double faults to emerge victorious. "I knew that I wanted to get the momentum as early as I could and try to keep it," Keys said. "I knew that she could play really great tennis, so just wanted to get a lead and then run with it." Keys set up a third-round match with Germany's Laura Siegemund, who posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 29 seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada. Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka battled through a tough first set to record a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Czech Marie Bouzkova. The Belarus native notched five aces and had 41 winners against only 18 unforced errors. Sabalenka was pleased to be advancing in the tournament and avoid the fate of second-seeded Coco Gauff, third-seeded Jessica Pegula and fifth-seeded Qinwen Zheng of China. The latter three players have been eliminated from the tournament. "Honestly, it's very sad to see so many top players losing in the first round, but you're better off focusing on yourself and staying away from the results," Sabalenka said in her on-court interview. She then lightened the mood with a joke. "I hope there are no more upsets in this tournament," the top-seeded player said. Sabalenka, who is bidding for her first Wimbledon title, will face the winner of Wednesday's match between 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova, a Czech, and local favorite Emma Raducanu. Also Wednesday, Spaniard Cristina Bucsa coasted to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 22 seed Donna Vekic of Croatia. Sonay Kartal of Great Britain also topped Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets. — REUTERS

Tennis-Keys stays on course for rare Australian Open-Wimbledon double

FILE PHOTO: Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 2, 2025 Madison Keys of the U.S. in action during her second round match against Serbia's Olga Danilovic REUTERS/Stephanie Lecocq/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -There is nothing flashy about Madison Keys, but she knows how to get the job done and that priceless quality was on display as she eased past Olga Danilovic 6-4 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the Wimbledon third round. The Australian Open champion is on the hunt for further Grand Slam glory at the All England Club and could become the first woman since the great Serena Williams to win those two majors in the same season. Yet whereas Williams' ferocious weapons were clear for all to see, Keys is more the model of consistency. She has a big forehand and serve, but a potent part of her arsenal is being able to step up when it matters most. The 37th-ranked Danilovic put up a brave fight, which included saving five break points in one game in the second set, but Keys' consistency meant she never looked like causing an upset. On paper, the numbers were fairly even. The winners' count was 19-15 in Keys' favour while Danilovic made marginally more unforced errors - but Keys broke her opponent four times and lost her own serve once. After a nervy opener when she beat Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse in three sets, this was far more comfortable for the American - and with rain returning to Wimbledon after scorching temperatures on the first two days, Keys was much happier. "I definitely felt a little more comfortable today, it's the cloudy rainy England we know and love so I felt a little more normal," she said. "I knew that she could play really great tennis, I really just wanted to get a lead and run with it." Next up for Keys is a match against Germany's Laura Siegmund, who has already earned her best result at Wimbledon by reaching the third round. (Reporting by Toby Davis, editing by Ed Osmond)

Tennis-Sabalenka sees off Bouzkova to reach Wimbledon third round

Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 2, 2025 Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka reacts during her second round match against Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova REUTERS/Isabel Infantes LONDON (Reuters) -Top seed Aryna Sabalenka was given a tougher workout than she would have bargained for but the top seed methodically dismantled Czech Marie Bouzkova 7-6(4) 6-4 to reach the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday. As the sun played hide-and-seek with the grey clouds that hovered over Centre Court, Sabalenka kept knocking on the door in the opening set but was shut out by Bouzkova each time and dropped serve with a double fault in the 11th game. A frustrated Sabalenka let out a scream when she failed to convert a breakpoint in the following game but the 27-year-old quickly composed herself to force a tiebreak with a backhand winner on her next opportunity. The three-times Grand Slam champion from Belarus, who has a golden chance to claim her first Wimbledon title with several seeds losing early, led the tiebreak after a couple of errors from Bouzkova and wrapped up the set with a forehand winner. An untimely error at the net by Bouzkova gifted Sabalenka the break in the fifth game of the second set and there was no looking back from there with the twice semi-finalist holding firm to close out the win.
