Alexander Zverev considers therapy after shock Wimbledon exit
Zverev, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, fell to the world number 72 in a gruelling five-set match lasting four hours and 40 minutes on Centre Court. The 28-year-old, who has struggled with consistency in recent months, described his emotional turmoil in a candid post-match press conference.
'It's funny, I feel very alone out there at times. I struggle mentally. I've been saying that since after the Australian Open,' Zverev said. 'I'm trying to find ways to kind of get out of this hole. I keep kind of finding myself back in it in a way.'
When asked if he would seek professional help, Zverev responded, 'Maybe for the first time in my life I'll probably need it.' He added, 'I've never felt this empty before. Just lacking joy, just lacking joy in everything that I do. It's not necessarily about tennis.'
Zverev, who reached the Australian Open final earlier this year, has now suffered his earliest Grand Slam exit since 2019. The match, which began on Monday evening, was suspended due to Wimbledon's curfew before resuming on Tuesday. Despite hitting 31 aces, Zverev could not overcome Rinderknech's resilience.
The German has never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon in nine attempts. His recent struggles come after off-court controversies, including dropped legal cases related to past allegations.

SIXTH-SEEDED Madison Keys recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Olga Danilovic on Wednesday to advance to the third round at Wimbledon. The Australian Open champion is on the hunt for further Grand Slam glory at the All England Club and could become the first woman since the great Serena Williams to win those two majors in the same season. Yet whereas Williams' ferocious weapons were clear for all to see, Keys is more the model of consistency. She has a big forehand and serve, but a potent part of her arsenal is being able to step up when it matters most. The 37th-ranked Danilovic put up a brave fight, which included saving five break points in one game in the second set, but Keys' consistency meant she never looked like causing an upset. On paper, the numbers were fairly even. The winners' count was 19-15 in Keys' favour while Danilovic made marginally more unforced errors - but Keys broke her opponent four times and lost her own serve once. After a nervy opener when she beat Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse in three sets, this was far more comfortable for the American - and with rain returning to Wimbledon after scorching temperatures on the first two days, Keys was much happier. A frustrated Sabalenka let out a scream when she failed to convert a breakpoint in the following game but the 27-year-old quickly composed herself to force a tiebreak with a backhand winner on her next opportunity.
