This is a list for the people, by the people – a manifesto of your favourite menus and venues, fighting it out for a shot to take home the crown in each category of the What's On Dubai Awards 2025.
Did your favourite make the cut?
The winners will be announced at a glittering award ceremony, to be held at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre on Wednesday, April 16. Table bookings can be made now via Platinumlist.
New for 2025
This year, we're switching things up a little, because like the F&B we're honouring – our awards are served fresh. We're saying farewell to the long-held format of dividing restaurants by 'average date nights spends of more or less than Dhs400'. And, in its place, we have a simplified, casual or fine dining designation.
Seven restaurant categories will sit outside of these distinctions, with one unified group of fine and casual dining for – Favourite All-Day Dining Restaurant, Favourite Brasserie, Favourite French Restaurant, Favourite Seafood Restaurant, Favourite Steakhouse, Favourite Restaurant: Northern Emirates and Favourite Brunch: À La Carte.
Grand Prix
Four more categories; Homegrown Restaurant of the Year, Chef of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and Restaurant of the Year will also be awarded on the night, voted for solely by an expert panel comprised of the What's On team.
Without further ado, here is the shortlist (in alphabetical order) for the What's On Awards Dubai 2025:

Abu Dhabi shows it has formula for success at premiere of F1 movie at Yas Marina Circuit
26 June 2025 22:52 KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (ABU DHABI)The red carpet was rolled out at Yas Marina Circuit on Wednesday night, not for a Grand Prix, but for the much-anticipated premiere of F1, the motorsports blockbuster starring Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt and directed by Top Gun Maverick filmmaker Joseph premiere, ahead of the international release of the movie on June 26, marked a full-circle moment for the UAE capital, where large portions of the movie were shot over 26 days in late 2024, with filming taking place in and around Yas Marina Circuit during the Formula 1 season. The project represents a new milestone in Abu Dhabi's growing reputation as a global hub for Hollywood movie shoots. Speaking to Aletihad at the premiere, Mohamed Dobay, Acting Director General of the Creative Media Authority (CMA), expressed pride in Abu Dhabi's starring role in the production. 'We are proud to have the F1 movie premiere in Abu Dhabi after a huge experience and success during the production,' he said.'It's remarkable. The film stars a blockbuster name like Brad Pitt and is directed by Joseph Kosinski, and it showcases the strength of Abu Dhabi's creative industry on a global scale.'The film follows Pitt's character, Sonny Hayes, a former driver dragged back into the fast-paced world of Formula 1 to mentor young racing ace Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris, blending dramatic storytelling with authentic, high-speed racing sequences shot during real races. That realism was made possible thanks to close coordination between film crews, Formula 1 organisers, and Abu Dhabi officials - a feat that earned praise from industry professionals. 'This only confirms the work we've put in over the years to develop the infrastructure to attract productions like F1,' Sameer Al Jaberi, Head of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, told Aletihad on red carpet. 'We started communicating with the studio three years ago. We worked closely to determine what could be filmed in Abu Dhabi, which locations worked, and what support we could offer, from budget planning to talent and crew.'Abu Dhabi's ability to facilitate filming during a live Formula 1 race was hailed as a landmark accomplishment in global film production. A video screened at the premiere also highlighted Abu Dhabi's hospitality, as a filming destination.'Filming at Yas Marina Circuit, during an actual race, and coordinating the film shoot and the live event without disruption, that by itself is a great achievement,' Al Jaberi added. 'It was brilliantly orchestrated and went very smoothly.'The Yas Marina Circuit, which hosts the final race destination of the F1 season, provided a visually stunning backdrop for the film's climactic scenes. Audiences at the premiere were treated to a screening that combined the roar of engines with sweeping aerial shots and emotionally charged performances, blending Hollywood spectacle with real-world racing hope is that the F1 movie could propel more high-profile productions to Abu Dhabi. The emirate's competitive rebate programme, state-of-the-art facilities, experienced crews, and stunning locations have already drawn filmmakers from around the notable movies filmed in the capital include 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout', '6 Underground', and 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.'As the lights dimmed and the opening credits rolled at Yas Marina Circuit, it was clear the event was more than a film premiere, it was a celebration of how far Abu Dhabi has come as a cinematic destination. With Brad Pitt's star power and Kosinski's directorial vision drawing global attention, the city's investment in the creative economy looks to be paying off.

F1 movie review: Big names, big engines – but does the story keep pace?
I'm a relatively new F1 fan – and no, it didn't start with Drive to Survive, and I didn't fall for Charles Leclerc's jawline. My fandom began with research, old race replays, and a crash course in everything from understeer to the total number of people in the pit crew and their jobs. Why? For work. I was covering the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for What's On and wanted to understand the basics: from drivers and teams to formation laps and tire strategies. Movie still from F1 | Credit: moviestillsdb Long story short: I got hooked. Now? No plans on race weekends, errands done before all sessions, and eyes glued to every lap. I'm a Max Verstappen fan (yes, really), but also a proud Tifosi. And lately, Lando Norris is quietly creeping into my top tier. (We can debate the politics of that fandom triangle later.) Honestly, I didn't even know about the F1 movie until a few months ago. But when I heard it was three years in the making, co-produced by Lewis Hamilton – a seven (okay, eight…) time world champion – I was sold. So, is this really Formula 1… or just Fast & Furious with carbon fibre? Movie still from F1 | Credit: moviestillsdb The first red flag, however, came early. At a special screening for drivers in New York, Carlos Sainz (now driving for Williams) said: 'I'll just say – for the pure F1 fan, be open-minded to Hollywood F1 films…' Uh oh. With Sainz's words echoing in my head, I found myself in front of the big screen. Open-minded, Aarti… open-minded, I reminded myself. The lights went out pretty quickly, and I was hooked from the starting line. Movie still from F1 | Credit: moviestillsdb We meet Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a former F1 driver sidelined by a devastating crash. These days, he's bouncing between odd racing gigs, but when a struggling F1 team offers him a wildcard comeback, he hesitates – then agrees, one last shot at glory. It's a simple story — far easier to follow than the layered drama I had to untangle while learning the motorsport, and very Hollywood. But that's good news for non-F1 fans, because it's straightforward and easy to digest. There are certain things I could push past – his age on his return to the grid (likely older than Alonso, and that's saying something), for one. But also the, erm, multiple infringements during the race that would've had the FIA making it rain – not with prize money, but with penalty points. Above: Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025 And one continuity gripe that stood out: these cars were apparently running on rocket fuel, because they kept reaching the hairpin (Turn 5 at Yas Marina) in under 15 seconds – repeatedly. While F1 clearly belongs in the 'action' genre, I found myself craving more on-track drama. *Your ultimate guide to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025* But maybe that's just the adrenaline junkie in me. That said, the realism of the racing scenes – shot using groundbreaking technology – definitely gripped me. The speed, the sound, the adrenaline… it was all captured so perfectly, it genuinely felt like I was watching a real race. So real, in fact, that my eyes kept flicking left, instinctively searching for the timing tower. And Hayes' POV behind the wheel really puts you right in the action. I can't not mention the score. Hans Zimmer delivers, as expected – but it felt underused. As a fan of his epic, soul-stirring compositions, I kept waiting (and wanting) for that goosebump-inducing moment. What's On verdict Movie still from F1 | Credit: moviestillsdb This film gripped my attention like a set of perfectly warmed Pirelli softs – not the C6s though, because if you're keeping up with, as Leclerc states on Drive To Survive 'the Kardashians of Formula 1', you'll know those didn't exactly win fans. It's not without faults, but it's high-octane, well-acted, and, for the most part, respectful to the sport. And whether you're in it for the data, the drama, or the drivers, it's worth a trip to the grid. Book your seats to see the movie here. Images: Getty Images and
