Denver's historic — seemingly haunted — Lumber Baron Inn is for sale

Axios05-05-2025
The historic Lumber Baron Inn in Denver's Highlands neighborhood just hit the market for $3.2 million.
Yes, but: The buyer should probably be comfortable with things that go bump in the night.
State of spooks: The three-story Victorian mansion — currently operating as a bed and breakfast and events space — has earned a reputation as one of the city's most haunted landmarks.
Flashback: Lumber magnate John Mouat built the property in 1890 for his wife and five children. But tragedy struck early.
Mouat's 10-year-old son was fatally stabbed inside the home by a grocer, according to History Colorado's Rachael Storm. Then came the Panic of 1893, which tanked the markets — and Mouat's fortune.
In the 1970s, during the building's stint as an apartment complex, two young women were murdered in a double homicide that remains unsolved.
The big picture: Since then, whispers, phantom footsteps and ghostly apparitions have become part of the mansion's mystique — shared by owners, guests and paranormal tourists alike.
What they're saying: "You definitely know they're here, but it's not scary," outgoing owner Joel Bryant told 9News last year about the girls' spirits. "I love it when they interact with me and say hi to us."
What's next: The future is up to the buyer.
They could convert it back into a private home, but its transferable cabaret liquor license — a "coveted" and "hard to obtain" perk — makes it especially appealing for those looking to keep the business running, Olivia Vallone, spokesperson for listing agent CBRE, tells Axios Denver.

Dentist's $25M marble- and gold-drenched Brooklyn home now the priciest for sale in the borough

Forget the 'King of Queens.' Why not live like the Baron of Brooklyn? A former dentist imbued his passion for old-world architecture into every nook and cranny of this palatial Bay Ridge home. The aggressively gilded property listed for $25 million on Tuesday, the New York Times reported, which StreetEasy notes makes it the most expensive single-family home on the Brooklyn market. 'Ever since listing it, my phone has really been blowing up,' listing representative Alexander Boriskin told The Post. 'A lot of people have questions, and they're mesmerized by the photos.' Dmitry Epelboym, a Ukraine-born dentist, purchased the Bay Ridge lot with his then-wife Lidia for $1.3 million in 2010, according to city records. A century-old Victorian, owned by Blondie keyboardist Jimmy Destri, occupied the property. Not for long, though. Epelboym tore the old home down and spent the next eight years building the opulent European palace of his dreams. He sourced imported marble, handpicked limestone from Italy and hired artisans to apply gold leaf by hand. The cost was considerable. Epelboym told the Times he 'stopped counting after $10 million.' Courtesy of Zoe Wetherall The 14,000-square-foot home's marble foyer quite literally reflects its owner's style. Massive mirrors line the walls alongside immense gilded millwork. Twin marble staircases are complemented by gold-leaf railings and a stained-glass starburst on the ceiling lights up the room. 'This is unique. I don't think anything has ever been on the market like this, certainly not in Bay Ridge,' Boriskin said. The surrounding neighborhood is no stranger to large properties, Boriskin said, but they tend to change hands through families rather than the market. He believes the home will sell to someone with an affinity for its current style, rather than a vision for change. The cost of building a comparable property today, Boriskin said, would be far more pricey than its $25 million ask. The time and expense put into the opulent residence is on display in every room. The dining and living room fireplaces are adorned with precious stones like lapis lazuli and green malachite, and the ornate chef's kitchen is bedecked in burgundy quartz. Gilded floral reliefs and sconces held aloft by griffins decorate the stately office. 13 Even the television is gilded in this large bedroom. Epelboym's ambitious build included excavation for an 11-foot-tall basement level. The subterranean space features a personal spa with a sauna, a marble-lined Turkish bath, a hot tub and a rustic bucket shower. It also includes a home theater and a large ballroom. The latter boasts a chandelier rescued from a historic Tennessee riverboat, the Times reported. Epelboym, an admirer of historic European architecture, filled the home with materials sourced on trips abroad. He told the Times he was particularly inspired by 'the palazzos of Italy and iconic places like St. Peter's Basilica.' Advertisement Epelboym's successful dental practice of three decades ended in 2018 when he pleaded guilty to insurance fraud. He told the Times he was eligible for reinstatement a few years later, but chose not to pursue it. Epelboym, now divorced, spends his time abroad. According to Boriskin, his travels keep him away from home 10 months out of the year. 'This home is now ready for its next chapter,' Epelboym said.

Why You Should Hire Local Pest Control Experts in Glasgow

Pests can disrupt your home, damage your property, and even pose serious health risks. Whether you're a homeowner, tenant, or business owner, pest issues require fast and reliable solutions. If you're facing an infestation in Glasgow, working with a local professional is often the most effective choice. This article explores why hiring local experts for Pest Control Glasgow is the best decision you can make. Pest control in Glasgow is hard because the city has a unique mix of older buildings, tenement flats, new developments, and commercial areas. Rats, mice, wasps, bed bugs, cockroaches, and ants are just a few of the pests that local professionals have firsthand knowledge with. Local pest control teams are aware of seasonal behaviors, property types, and regional pest patterns, in contrast to national providers who use a one-size-fits-all approach. This allows them to apply highly tailored treatments that deliver better results for Pest Control Glasgow. Pest issues usually don't happen when it's most convenient. If you suddenly see a rodent or have a wasp problem, you need to act fast. Hiring a pest control company in Glasgow means they can respond quickly, sometimes within a few hours. Since they are local, their team is close by, which helps avoid delays from travel and allows them to come out for emergencies when needed. For urgent pest control in Glasgow, acting quickly can prevent small problems from turning into big damage to your property. Pest control involves the use of chemicals, traps, and potentially hazardous equipment. It's vital that any treatment complies with local environmental and safety regulations. Local pest control companies are well-versed in Scottish health and safety laws, Glasgow City Council regulations, and waste disposal requirements. This expertise reduces liability and ensures all treatments are legally compliant. Choosing a provider familiar with Pest Control Glasgow laws gives you peace of mind that the job will be completed responsibly and professionally. By choosing a local business, you're directly supporting the Glasgow economy. Local pest control companies employ local technicians, pay local taxes, and often source their supplies from nearby vendors. In turn, they are more invested in their reputation and long-term relationships within the community. Providers of Pest Control Glasgow rely on referrals and positive reviews from local customers, which pushes them to consistently deliver high-quality service. Local companies take pride in building relationships with their clients. When you work with the same team over time, they become familiar with your property, pest history, and specific needs. This allows for better continuity and more proactive maintenance services. National chains may rotate staff or outsource jobs, making it harder to establish trust. In contrast, a local Pest Control Glasgow provider offers a more consistent and personalized customer experience. From Victorian townhouses in the West End to new-build flats in Southside, Glasgow's properties vary widely in structure and age. Local pest control professionals are familiar with common vulnerabilities in these properties, such as roof voids, cracked walls, and damp basements. They also understand the needs of Glasgow's diverse commercial landscape. Restaurants, offices, warehouses, and schools all face different pest threats. Whether it's rodent control in city centre restaurants or bird-proofing for industrial units in Hillington, local teams have the right experience for your situation. Choosing a provider focused solely on Pest Control Glasgow means you're getting a team that's equipped for your environment—not a generic service designed for a different region. Pest control doesn't end with one treatment. Effective pest management includes follow-up visits, monitoring, and prevention strategies. Local providers are more accessible for return visits and long-term contracts. They can revisit your property easily and track the progress of a treatment plan over time. Many local Pest Control Glasgow companies offer seasonal inspection packages and preventative solutions tailored to recurring issues specific to the city. Whether it's dealing with mice during the winter or wasps in the summer, having a local team on your side means long-term protection, not just short-term fixes. Local pest control businesses live and die by their reputation. With a limited geographic service area, they rely heavily on word-of-mouth referrals and online reviews from Glasgow residents. That means they're more likely to go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. Glasgow customers can also more easily verify their credentials, check past work, or even speak to other clients in the area. This builds trust and ensures you're hiring a reliable professional for your Pest Control Glasgow needs. Environmentally conscious homeowners and businesses in Glasgow are increasingly looking for green pest control solutions. Many local providers are ahead of the curve, offering eco-friendly options that are safe for children, pets, and the environment. From humane rodent traps to non-toxic sprays and organic deterrents, local teams can recommend solutions that fit your values. As demand grows for sustainable Pest Control Glasgow services, local providers are stepping up with innovative, low-impact alternatives. What Homeowner Finds While Renovating 1858 Victorian House Stuns Internet

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A video showcasing the quirks and hidden treasures of a Victorian home dating back to 1858 has gone viral on TikTok. The clip, shared by Michele Mayberry (@henryklisthouse), a patent attorney from Blacksburg, Virginia, follows her ongoing renovation of a historic property in Wheeling, West Virginia. The video has had over 636,000 viewers since it was posted on June 29. Mayberry purchased the home last year, she told Newsweek. Set to her voiceover narration, the video walks viewers through a series of unexpected and curious discoveries from inside the home. "Here's some old things we found in our 1858 Victorian home that we are renovating," Mayberry says at the start of the video. The viral clip comes amid a broader trend in rising investments in home renovation. The median spending on home renovation in the United States was found to have surged by 60 percent between 2020 and 2023, rising from $15,000 to $24,000, according to a 2024 survey by Houzz, a home design website. Among the more eye-catching finds in the viral clip is a vintage sign that reads "Blood Mobile," a relic from the when the house was used by the Moundsville Chapter of the American Red Cross in the mid-20th century. The building had also served as a school prior to that time. "There were several antique mirrors and furniture left behind," Mayberry told Newsweek. "The walled-up windows are the most interesting. They provide hints as to how the house was configured at different points in time throughout the history of the house." She added that one of the covered windows—found in a basement wall—was once an exterior window of a garage that has since been converted into a room. "There is a beautiful stained-glass window and door that used to be the exterior also but was included in the interior when the 1880s addition was added on," she said. One especially puzzling discovery is shown in a narrow closet. "There is an exterior window that they covered up in this closet, it goes back to the same stairwell," Mayberry says in the video. "But it's in the middle of the house, so I'm really not sure why there's an exterior window here." The clip also spotlights a vintage bentwood chair, which Mayberry said was left behind from when the building operated as the Lyceum School. Another piece is an antique mirror found on the bathroom mantle. "The label indicates that the mirror came from an art store in Wheeling that was around in the early 1900s," she notes. 'So Cool' The unusual finds and preserved architectural details—such as original windows, doors, and furnishings—have inspired praise and fascination in the video's comments section. "This is so awesome," wrote TikTok user booby_bear, while KW4200 said: "this is so cooooooool." User @youshouldeat said: "I would love to find these treasures," and @t_doucier said: "a house with a History... with a soul." Several viewers speculated about the strange interior window. "Maybe that window was for ventilation in the stairway and to add light from the other room," suggested runninglight21. JoAnne89 added: "The exterior window might of been the outside wall & the previous owners might of made the house bigger." "The house is beautiful," commented a user called Grand Army of the Republic. "I bet that window is for lighting that stairwell before electrical lights and too narrow for an oil lamp." Several viewers were invested in the home's architectural preservation. "Please keep its charm and don't turn it dull and grey," pleaded paniicattak.
