Monsoon Woes: Pediatrician Shares How To Protect Your Child From Monsoon Illnesses
Children fall sick in monsoon due to a sharp rise in waterborne infections. A pediatrician explains how you can keep your children safe from seasonal illnesses.
As monsoon showers sweep across Maharashtra, hospitals in cities like Pune and Mumbai are seeing a sharp rise in paediatric waterborne infections. Among them, doctors have reported an increase in seasonal illnesses like diarrhoea, typhoid, and jaundice.
'This season has seen nearly a 40% spike in monsoon-related infections among children," says Dr. Rohini Nagarkar, Senior Consultant and Academic Head of Paediatrics at Surya Mother and Child Super Speciality Hospital, Pune. She attributes the surge to a combination of waterlogging, poor drainage, and contamination of drinking water supplies – a recurring concern during heavy rains.
When Rain Breeds Risk
Pathogens such as E. coli, rotavirus, hepatitis A, and cholera thrive in stagnant water and unclean environments. 'Children are especially vulnerable due to their underdeveloped immune systems and greater exposure to unhygienic surroundings," Dr. Nagarkar warns.
Common culprits include street food, shared water bottles, and improperly washed produce.
Early symptoms may seem mild, such as stomach cramps or fatigue, but can quickly escalate. 'Persistent vomiting, loose stools, lethargy, dry mouth, or yellowing of the skin can indicate serious dehydration or jaundice," she cautions.
Fortunately, most of these illnesses are preventable with basic precautions. Boiling water, practising proper hand hygiene, avoiding street food, and ensuring children are vaccinated against typhoid and hepatitis are simple but effective steps. 'In high-risk areas, routine health check-ups can help catch infections early," Dr. Nagarkar adds.
While monsoons bring cooler temperatures and green landscapes, they also demand greater vigilance. With the right preventive measures and timely medical care, families can safeguard their children's health and let them enjoy the season safely.
In a season where joy and illness often go hand in hand, awareness remains a family's strongest ally. As infections rise, so does the need for proactive parenting and community-level sanitation efforts. 'It's not just about treating the illness, it's about preventing it before it reaches our children," Dr. Nagarkar emphasises.
With simple, consistent care and timely intervention, families can turn the tide against monsoon-related health threats.

Less Oil, More Variety: What Makes Japanese Food So Inherently Healthy?
Last Updated: Japanese food is all about clean flavours, minimal heaviness, and nourishing meals. It prioritizes balance and longevity over buzzwords and quick fixes. Most cuisines begin with oil sizzling in a hot pan. Japanese cooking starts with something far gentler – water or a delicate broth made from kombu (kelp), mushrooms, or dried fish. This single choice reshapes everything. Rather than being fried, foods are simmered, poached, or steamed. The result? Clean flavours, minimal heaviness, and meals that feel both nourishing and light. But it's not just about skipping oil. Japanese cuisine thrives on balance. It's not interested in food trends like 'low-carb" or 'sugar-free." Instead, it quietly follows time-tested principles: moderation, variety, and simplicity. Here's what makes Japanese food one of the most effective (and underrated) ways to eat well. Small Plates, Big Balance Instead of one oversized main dish, Japanese meals are made of several modest servings: a portion of rice, a few pickled or cooked vegetables, grilled fish, a bowl of miso soup, maybe some tofu. No single item dominates, but together, they form a complete and satisfying whole. This emphasis on variety over volume helps prevent overeating while ensuring nutritional balance. Miso, soy sauce, pickles, natto – fermentation is deeply woven into the Japanese diet. These naturally probiotic-rich foods aid digestion and support gut health without relying on supplements. They also deliver deep umami flavour, proving that healthy food can be rich and craveable. Vegetables aren't an afterthought; they're at the heart of most meals. Served raw, pickled, simmered, or steamed, they retain both nutrition and texture. Seaweed adds mineral-rich variety, while ingredients like daikon radish appear in everything from soups to salads. Seafood is the preferred protein, with fatty fish like mackerel, salmon, and sardines featured prominently. These are packed with heart-healthy omega-3s and are typically prepared either grilled, raw, or gently simmered. No heavy sauces or oil-laden techniques, just fresh, clean protein in modest portions. Eating Is Slow, Not Rushed Meals are eaten mindfully, with small bowls and chopsticks, naturally encouraging slower bites. There's no pressure to clean your plate; eating at this pace supports digestion and fullness, without ever feeling restrictive. It's not just what you eat, but how you eat that makes the difference. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
