OC Transpo explores ‘creative' ways to expand non-fare revenue
In an effort to expand revenues, OC Transpo is looking at adopting several creative options, including OC merchandise, coffee kiosks and parcel delivery.

Transit Commission Chair Glen Gower said with several LRT stations open and expansion underway, they're becoming 'high-traffic stations,' which is an opportunity for the city to look into more advertising revenues.

'Priority 1' would be a plan to expand billboard advertisements, installing more vending machines and a retail program expansion, which includes coffee kiosks and 'pop-ups'.

Currently, Happy Goat Coffee is the only 'retail option' for transit riders, available at Tunney's Pasture, Hurdman, and Blair stations.

'I often pick up the coffee at Happy Goat at Tunney's Pasture station on my way into work,' said Gower, who is councillor for Stittsville. He also spoke of ideas of bringing in small grocery stores and convenience stores for people looking to get meals on their way in and out of the city.

'As more people use transit, there's more of a market, and maybe, there's some interest there,' Gower said.

Third-party parcel delivery, which is considered a 'Priority 2', includes assessing a project to set up lockers at busy transit stations. Gower says this could be a convenient opportunity for people to pick up and drop off parcels and mail during transit hours.

'It's just trying to find some creative use of the stations and meet people where it's convenient,' he said.

'Priority 2' also looks at monetizing non-commercial spaces and reviewing the rates and expansion of the Bus Charter Program.

'Priority 3' focuses on introducing transit merchandise, including gifts and collectibles, and renting out Park and Ride spaces when they are not in use, which has been used in the past for events like farmers markets and local events.

OC Transpo scrapping youth passes on Sept. 1, charging 11-19 year-olds the same fare as adults
It will soon be the end of the road for OC Transpo's youth pass, as the City of Ottawa gets set to scrap the discounted pass for 11- to 19-year-olds at the end of August. In a memo to council, acting OC Transpo general manager Troy Charter reminded councillors the youth monthly pass will be discontinued as of September 1. 'Customers who currently have a Youth concession set on their Presto card will be charged an adult monthly pass on September 1,' Charter said. The youth monthly pass costs $104 a month, while an adult monthly pass costs $135 a month. Council approved the elimination of the youth monthly pass as part of the 2025 City of Ottawa budget in a bid to reduce a proposed budget deficit. The budget also eliminated free transit for 11 and 12-year-olds. A report for the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority shows the 2025-26 draft budget projected a $4.8 million increase in public transit costs due to the elimination of free transit for students 12 and under and scrapping the youth fare pass in September.

Councillor wants OC Transpo to extend 90-minute transfer window as some riders charged twice on trips
A Barrhaven councillor wants to extend the transfer window for OC Transpo commuters, as construction and system reliability slow down travel times this summer. Some commuters have complained that their trip from the downtown core or Gatineau to Barrhaven on the O-Train and buses has exceeded the 90-minute transfer window, meaning they may be charged twice for a single trip. 'It is wrong in every way and that's the reason why I put forward a motion at the last Transit Commission for OC Transpo to fix this,' Coun. David Hill told Newstalk 580 CFRA's the Morning Rush with Bill Carroll Wednesday morning. Hill has introduced a motion at the Transit Committee to direct staff to review the 90-minute transfer window and 'present options as part of the comprehensive fare review to temporarily increase the transfer window.' Hill says there are a 'number of issues at play' that are contributing to the delays for transit riders. 'The first one being that there is a significant construction delay between Algonquin College and Tunney's Pasture for anybody that's on those routes. So that's a 15-minute, 20-minute addition depending on the time of the day and traffic that comes with circulation that affects routes,' Hill said. 'The second one is that we need more reliability out of Tunney's Pasture. If the buses come on time when they were supposed to be leaving Tunney's Pasture to get people back, then that last path that people need to make with their Presto card at Fallowfield Station or Marketplace Station would happen within that 90-minute window, but the reality is right now is it's not as reliable as we'd like it to be and we need that to improve.' The Toronto Transit Commission and Montreal's STM also have 120-minute windows for transfers. Hill says the New Ways to Bus system launched in the spring was designed to get people from Barrhaven to Tunney's Pasture 'super quick,' but construction and available buses are slowing down the commute. 'If the reliability of the system that was taking people from Tunney's back to Barrhaven at the end of the day was on point, such that we had the buses there when they were supposed to leave and not bunched up, so you get three-four buses, all arriving within 90 seconds, and then the next bus comes in 40 minutes,' Hill said. 'We just need the reliability of that routing coming out of Tunney's, that will address the root cause issue.' Hill tells Newstalk 580 CFRA customers that are charged twice on the same trip can apply for a refund. The councillor says he's had 'regular conversations' with staff about extending the transfer window, and is hopeful the issue will be resolved. In May, OC Transpo delivered 98 per cent of scheduled trips, with trips cancelled due to mechanical breakdowns on buses, not enough operators and on-street adjustments to service. OC Transpo rolling out fare capping for Presto card users Aug. 1

Transit Services general manager Renée Amilcar said in a memo Tuesday that beginning Aug. 1, transit riders using a Presto card will not have to pay more than the cost of a monthly pass in any given month when tapping their cards to board a bus or train or when using Para Transpo. 'This new feature is ideal for customers using a Presto card who are eligible for a discount and are unsure how frequently they will use transit in a given month,' Amilcar wrote. 'Customers can load funds onto their Presto card to pay per trip on OC Transpo buses, the O-Train and Para Transpo. Once their total fares paid reach the cost of their monthly pass type, all additional trips for the remainder of that month will be free.' The only exception is the rural supplement for rural trips on Para Transpo. OC Transpo says only the base part of the rural fare (the price of a single urban trip) counts towards the monthly total. Upon reaching the monthly cap, riders will be charged the rural supplement for any additional rural trips. Fare capping is already in effect for people who pay with their credit or debit card. This new Presto card policy will extend to people eligible for discount monthly passes such as the senior's pass, EquiPass or Community Pass. An adult monthly pass costs $135 and a youth monthly pass is $104. A senior's pass and the EquiPass are $58.25 per month, while the Community pass costs $43.25 per month. 'For Senior, EquiPass, and Community pass holders, monthly fare capping on your Presto card offers you the flexibility of monthly savings without the upfront cost,' OC Transpo says. A Presto card user with a regular adult monthly pass would need to pay for 34 regular trips with their card in a month to hit the cap. Seniors, who also pay a reduced fare on their Presto cards, would reach the cap on their 19th trip. Amilcar says customers won't have to do anything extra to take advantage of fare capping. 'Customers are asked to continue tapping their card for every trip – even after reaching the monthly cap – as this adds proof-of-payment to the card in case of fare inspection and supports accurate ridership tracking,' Amilcar's memo says. Customers who regularly transfer to Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) service are asked to continue purchasing monthly passes to ensure seamless travel between the two transit systems. OC Transpo confirms that unlike debit or credit card payments on the transit system, which cap at $12 in a single day—the price of a day pass—fare capping with Presto is only monthly.
