
My first sleeper train? Like trying to nap on the Central Line
Romance and glamour were notably absent on the 8.20pm from Tbilisi in Georgia, my first ever overnight train. Orient-Express levels of comfort and service were never expected; our tickets cost £37 each rather than thousands, after all. But with all the recent hype around new night trains across Europe — from European Sleeper's Brussels-Berlin route to SJ Night's Stockholm-Hamburg service — I had anticipated at least some hard-to-put-your-finger-on magic. Jovial company, maybe? Beautiful scenery, perhaps? Sadly, the reality, on a Monday night in early April, was quiet (there were two dozen passengers, tops), too dark to see anything (the sun had set before we left) and prosaic (making your own bed on holiday? Not a vibe). And what I definitely didn't expect was to feel quite so awful in the morning.

There were some aspects of the journey that pleasantly surprised me. The pillows may have been a questionable shade of yellow, but the sheets, delivered to our door just after the train departed? Crisp, spotless. Our modern, second-class, Russian-designed cabin was roomy and we loved unpacking our possessions and making it feel (a bit) like home. Of course, it helped that the other two berths in our cabin hadn't been booked. It was toasty in our nest too; just the antidote to the soggy Caucasian spring.

But fundamentally, I discovered, this mode of travel is not for me. Travellers can be divided into two camps: those who can sleep basically anywhere and those who can only do so in a bed. A proper bed, that is. I'm among the latter and I found that, although the pulldown mattress may have been functional, there was no way I was going to sleep while the carriage wobbled and jolted so persistently (this was particularly bad on the Armenian side of the border). It felt like trying to nap on the Central Line.
In such a stressful environment, my fellow travellers came across all the more irritating. We had Drunk Idiot on one side, of course. On the other, a couple played tinny pop from their phones until 1am. And at the border, when everyone had to disembark, we were delayed by an obnoxious trio who refused to pay an existing fine — unclear what for — to the Georgian police. One of them, perhaps harshly, wasn't allowed back on board.

When we trundled into Yerevan at 6.55am, we found the city deserted. Why? Because it was 6.55am. No cafés were open and our Airbnb host wouldn't let us in until 3pm, so there we were on the streets, dragging our bags around the city having had just an hour of sleep. Next time we resolved to choose a train that would get in later, allowing for at least an attempt at a lie-in. Or maybe to just find another way to reach our destination. As it happened, we had intended to take the sleeper back to Georgia a week later. Er … no, thanks. Instead we booked a four-hour coach during the day that was quicker, cheaper and followed a spectacular route through the mountains. I put on a podcast and snoozed through the entire journey.

The beauty of checked luggage is obviously that you can wave goodbye to it - and carrying it around - while you're in the air. However, one expert has warned that with lost luggage a common occurrence, there are a few items that you should keep with you in your cabin bags. In a TikTok, savvy traveller brand @thepointsguy shared exactly which items will cause the maximum amount of inconvenience if they end up going AWOL for a while should your case get lost. Discussing the items tourists should 'never put in your checked bag, regardless of how short your flight is', he said prescription medicine was an absolute no-no. He explained: 'You may be able to get a doctor to call in your prescription, but that becomes trickier if it's a weekend or a holiday or if your medication doesn't allow for refills before the previous prescription runs out.' Elsewhere, the expert said that expensive electrical items should also stay close to you - because they're much more vulnerable to theft. While the vast majority of airport workers are honest, there is a risk that they may open a case to identify its owner - putting items such as games consoles, mobile phones or laptops and tablets at risk. Indeed it's a case of ditto for any expensive personal item of jewellery too. Keeping precious rings and necklaces tucked away in the hold may seem like a good idea but they are amongst the first things that are likely to be targeted if the bag falls into the wrong hands. Wads of holiday money should stay on your person, if possible, the travel TikToker adds. He explained that: 'Everything important goes into my carry-on. Meds, contacts, electronics in particular.' But also the items that will make you feel human again after 11 hours in the air, including toiletries, a change of clothes and the things you'll need to hand easily when you reach your accommodation - such as sunscreen and plug adapters. Last month, it was revealed that holidaymakers may soon avoid the frustration of paying extra fees for carry-on luggage at the boarding gate - thanks to proposed changes in EU airline rules. The EU Parliament transport committee has approved new regulations that would grant all passengers the right to carry a handbag or small suitcase weighing up to 7kg at no extra cost. Under the amendment, passengers would be allowed one cabin bag with dimensions measuring up to 100cm, in addition to a smaller personal item that fits under the seat. This proposal could significantly impact budget airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air, which currently charge extra for larger cabin baggage. If implemented, the rule would apply not only to domestic EU flights but also to international flights connecting the EU with non-member countries, including the UK. For the proposal to become law, it still requires approval from at least 55 per cent of EU member states, representing 65 cent of the total EU population. However, this process could take time and prompt pushback from national governments and airline lobbies. Spain has already expressed its approval for the proposed changes - but not everyone is on board. Airlines for Europe, representing major carriers, warn that the new rules could disrupt operations and ultimately lead to increased ticket prices for passengers - even for those not carrying extra luggage. Managing director Ourania Georgoutsakou told Politico that the European Parliament should 'let travellers decide what services they want, what services they pay for and, importantly, what services they don't.' Ahead of Tuesday's vote, the group contacted EU transport committee members, stressing practical and logistical challenges airlines would face. They pointed out that although many aircraft carry up to 180 passengers, the overhead compartments can only accommodate about 90 trolley-sized bags. The industry body argues that requiring free carry-on luggage could cause boarding delays and overcrowding, and that travellers should retain the flexibility to select and pay for only the services they require.

It's the one thing most flight passengers want but can't have - the chance to turn left on a plane and make their trip at 38,000ft a whole lot more comfortable. With business and first class tickets often priced at thousands above the cost of a seat at the back of the plane, they remain accessible only to the wealthy, or business travellers whose companies will foot the bill. However, several flight experts have shared their wisdom on tips and tricks to get a spot at the front of the plane without coughing up the full price. Speaking to The Independent, Gilbert Ott, founder of travel site said that buying a ticket in premium economy, often just a few hundred pounds more than an economy seat, can often secure you a place at the front of the queue for upgrades. Ott told the publication that the smallest cabin on the plane often gets the most oversold: 'They love to oversell this cabin with upgrades, effectively selling a seat on the plane twice to someone. 'And since it's such a small cabin, here you're most likely to receive a complimentary bump to business or first class.' And if you're travelling with a more budget operator, such as easyJet or Ryanair? Another expert, Zach Griff, senior reporter at travel brand The Points Guy, says a last-minute check-in is often the key to a better seat. He explained that often the most expensive seats on low-cost airlines are still sold right until the last moment - and when it's time to fly, you might bag an eleventh hour move to a more comfortable, better appointed seat. The travel sage said: 'If they end up going unsold, it's possible they might assign them to the last people checking in.' Earlier this year, Dawn Morwood, Co-Director of Cheap Deals Away UK, shared how to 'position yourself as a prime candidate' for the cabin crew to move you up to business – or even first class – absolutely free of charge. The first tip from Dawn is simply just to ask. She told the Express: 'When you check in, smile warmly and simply ask, 'Are there any upgrade opportunities available today?' 'This phrasing is important - it's polite, direct, and shows you understand upgrades aren't guaranteed.' But the timing of this question is also just as important, says Dawn. She explains: 'Check in early, when more premium seats are likely available, but not during peak busy periods when staff are rushed. And always ask discreetly - never demand an upgrade in front of other passengers.' Even your clothes could also make all the difference, so Dawn recommends choosing your airport outfit very wisely – and making a bit of an effort with your appearance. She says: 'Smart-casual clothing sends a signal that you'll 'fit in' with the premium cabin environment. 'Think neat jeans or trousers, a collared shirt or nice top, and clean, decent shoes.' Telling the staff you're celebrating something like a honeymoon or big birthday could also lead to cabin crew giving you special treatment. Dawn adds: 'I've seen couples get upgraded because they mentioned their anniversary. One pair even received complimentary champagne in business class.' Dawn also recommends being flexible with your travel plans and keeping an eye out for oversold flights - often during school holidays or weekends – as 'these flights offer better upgrade opportunities'. But there are some big, 'simple mistakes' Dawn says many people make that 'instantly ruin their chances of an upgrade'. She says: 'Asking loudly in front of other passengers, arriving at the gate just before boarding, or being rude to staff are all guaranteed ways to stay in economy. 'Remember that upgrades are at the discretion of airline staff – they're more likely to reward polite, appreciative customers who've shown loyalty to their airline. 'Even if you're nervous or excited, stay calm and friendly. 'A little genuine courtesy goes a long way when upgrade decisions are being made.'

Why do TikTok influencers like Molly Mae's sister have to ruin travel for the rest of us?
Before any trip abroad, I turn to TikTok – not so much for inspiration as to gather tips on what not to do. As much as I've been 'influenced' into buying pastel cookware or acrid powders to reduce bloating (spoiler: they don't), the idea that anyone would base their holiday around what vloggers say is faintly abhorrent. And yet, it happens. Call me dramatic – a snob, even – but many influencers, especially those with particularly large followings, tend not to venture outside the confines of their 5-star resort unless it is for something with the crowd-pleasing aesthetic that you could find anywhere in the world. Case in point: the fitness influencer (and Molly-Mae Hague's sister), Zoe Rae, who this week bemoaned the famous Indonesian province, Bali, because it wasn't how it looked on social media. In a YouTube video about the trip, she described the high expectations she and her husband, Danny, had when they visited for their wedding anniversary. 'We had seen on social media that everyone was having such a lovely time. Lovely places to eat and beaches, and lovely gyms and coffee shops. 'But I don't think the reality of Bali is shown much at all, and I do think it is down to a lot of influencers posting the more luxury side of things.' Almost inevitably, the couple left Bali after 48 hours in favour of Dubai. Now, don't get me wrong. Had Rae cited safety concerns, an incident or even a lack of satisfaction with the resort she had (presumably) forked out for, that would be one thing – it was a special occasion, after all. But she didn't. She didn't even expand on what bothered her about the 'reality of Bali', beyond the purported lack of 'lovely cafes'. I don't know about you, but when I fly for 16+ hours, the thing I am most desperate to see is not a coffee shop. What's more, Rae is slating a destination to her hundreds of thousands of followers that not only is part of a developing country, where an estimated four per cent of its people live below the poverty line, but where tourism accounts for 60 to 70 per cent of its regional GDP. It's also pretty tone deaf in this climate, as many people cannot afford to go away, full stop, let alone jet off to another location on a whim two days later. To me, it confirms something I have long feared to be true: that critical thought is dead and, what's more, the art of travel is, too – all because of social media, where having content to share afterwards can seem to matter more than the trip itself. What happened to exploring? Whatever happened to doing research and using more than one source to figure out your plans? As an avid solo traveller, I tend to do a lot of research in advance – mainly because I want to ensure I am safe and I don't get caught out. Unlike travelling with friends or a partner, you only have yourself to rely on. I also have an irrational fear of dining somewhere mediocre or a tourist trap due to a lack of foresight. That said, I don't have a detailed itinerary with set times, and I only book a place if I genuinely would hate to miss it. I certainly don't visit places because of TikTok-induced queues or novelty dishes that will end up in the bin after a mouthful filmed for the 'gram. To go to any country and not experience an iota of its culture is pretty ghastly. I'm not saying recommendations are without their benefits – nor am I saying that giving them is reserved only for journalists, authors or the elite. Before TikTok, there was Instagram. And before Instagram, there were travel blogs, reviews and – stretching back a bit here – almanacs. In some ways, these platforms have made travel far more accessible and community-focused. However, and I believe this to largely be because influencers' experiences are often #gifted, many online recommendations now are not based on authenticity, quality or even value, but rather, aesthetics. It's all about 'the scene'. And even the genuinely good recommendations have been ruined by word of mouth and, therefore, overtourism. That isn't what travel is about. We shouldn't rely on being spoon-fed to figure things out, nor should we travel halfway across the world just to take a photo in some cafe. Can we please go back to independent thinking and, perhaps, even normalise 'gatekeeping'?
