PUTRAJAYA, June 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has expressed deep regret over the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) repeated failure to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional entry of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave.
In a strongly-worded statement Thursday, Malaysia's Foreign Ministry, Wisma Putra, said the repeated failure of the Security Council to respond to one of the most devastating human tragedies since the Second World War, as a result of the exercise of veto, was indeed regrettable and deeply disappointing.

'Malaysia strongly opposes the Zionist Israeli regime's murder of civilians, their genocide and the perpetration of mass starvation and blockade of humanitarian aid as weapons of war,' the ministry's statement read.
The United States (US) on Wednesday vetoed a UNSC draft resolution that called for an 'immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire' in the Gaza Strip, according to international media reports.
The draft, proposed by Slovenia on behalf of the Council's 10 elected members - Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Panama, Pakistan, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and Slovenia - received 14 votes in favour.
The resolution expressed 'grave concern over the catastrophic humanitarian situation, including the risk of famine' and recalled the obligations of all parties to uphold international humanitarian and human rights law.
Wisma Putra said despite the failure of the Security Council, Malaysia stressed that the international community must not relent in efforts to restore peace, security, and stability in the Middle East.
It said the Zionist Israeli regime must realise that the only path to lasting peace and stability in the Middle East is through the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

PM ensures Port Dickson family receives aid

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for immediate assistance to be provided to a family in Kampung Baru Si Rusa, Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, who are facing hardship after the head of the household suffered a stroke. Anwar, who visited Faridah Abbas' family with his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, said the family is fully dependent on Faridah after her husband, Mohamad Ali Abdul Malek, became bedridden in 2024. "Azizah and I are deeply affected by the ordeal faced by this family. I have instructed the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department to provide the necessary facilities to help Faridah and her family continue their lives," he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (July 20). He said the assistance to be channelled includes a business kiosk to be provided for Faridah to earn an income by selling local delicacies and banana fritters, as well as levelling the front portion of the family house. "Hopefully, this kindness and assistance will ease the suffering of Faridah as she has to take care of her bedridden husband and her children," he said. Anwar is in Negri Sembilan for the Madani Government Leadership Ukhuwah Programme in conjunction with the retreat for administration members and Members of Parliament. The programme involves the participation of the Madani government administration members as part of efforts to build a network of brotherhood between leaders and the people in a relaxed, inclusive setting filled with values of togetherness. – Bernama

Parliamentarians are key to peace and stability in this region, says Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly

PHNOM PENH (Bernama): Parliamentarians across South-East Asia must take on a more active role in promoting diplomacy and stability amid rising geopolitical tensions. This was the key message from top speakers at the 16th Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Caucus held in Phnom Penh, who stressed that the role of lawmakers is more crucial than ever. Asean Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn also called on parliamentarians to champion peace and regional stability. He said that in the interconnected yet fragmented world, sustainable peace is not merely the absence of war or conflict, but the presence of justice, understanding, and inclusivity. "In an era marked by geopolitical tensions and proliferation of divisive narratives, the role of parliamentarians as bridge builders and peace makers has become more crucial today than before,' Kao said in his keynote remarks. The heads of AIPA from Asean member states and Timor-Leste are participating in the two-day event, which is being held at the National Assembly hall in the capital. "This caucus serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating true structure of dialogue, mutual respect, and sheer commitment to peaceful resolution. We can address the most complex challenges facing the region or the world,' said Kao. The theme of the meeting is 'Peace Through Dialogue: The Parliamentary Path Forward' - emphasising the role of parliamentary diplomacy in achieving peace and prosperity. Speaking at the event, Cambodia's National Assembly President Khuon Sudary said Cambodia remains fully committed to supporting Asean unity and centrality. "The roles of parliamentary diplomacy are increasingly critical in promoting regional and global peace efforts. By promoting dialogue, confidence-building measures, preventive diplomacy, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, we can contribute more to world peace. "AIPA, together with observer parliaments, needs to be more proactive and bolder in promoting parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation to shore up regional and global governance while promoting a rules-based international order,' said Sudary. - Bernama
