Scots Gladiator Sheli McCoy hails Pride of Scotland Unsung Heroes
Scots gladiator and weightlifting champion Sheli McCoy has hailed Pride of Scotland's unsung heroes as some of the 'strongest' humans on the planet.
Sheli, who is known to her fans as Sabre, is looking forward to celebrating the winners of our 2025 People's Oscars at the glittering ceremony on Monday night.
The 36-year-old, who is on track to represent Scotland in weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, says when it comes to record-breaking strength our unsung heroes are world champions.
Last year Sheli, who lives and runs a gym in Dundee, presented Abbie Jarvis and Kaylynn Donald with their Teenagers of Courage Award.
Both schoolgirls were victims of sickening attacks by other children and bravely waived their anonymity to back a Daily Record campaign to support victims of youth violence.
Kaylynn, 14, was brutally attacked on a school bus in Ladybank, Fife and Abbie, 15, was lured to a park in Glasgow and beaten unconscious as other kids filmed the vicious assault.
Sheli said: 'I felt so privileged to present Kaylynn and Abbie with their award last year. Those girls both underwent a torrent of horrific bullying and abuse.
'Yet here they are having the courage to stand up and speak out about their ordeals to help others. They are inspiring and educating a whole generation as well as motivating others to stand up to bullies. They are both real-life gladiators.'
The TV star, who trains between 16 and 19 hours a week, added: 'The Pride of Scotland awards are so special because you are sitting in a room filled with people who have bravery, courage and spirit in bucket loads but never seek anything from it.
'They don't make a song or dance about their achievements so it's brilliant they are being given the recognition they truly deserve.
'Last year was the first time I ever walked a red carpet and I feel honoured to have been asked to come back and help celebrate the nation's biggest and brightest stars - the unsung heroes.'
Sheli, who shot to overnight fame after the first episode of the Gladiators reboot aired on the BBC last January, admits she gets recognised everywhere she goes.
She said: 'I can't walk down the street anymore without being recognised but it's fine because I love it. People always apologise when they meet me but I tell them not to as they are the reason I have a job that I love.
'I have felt unwanted and unwelcome and it's awful. I don't want anyone else to ever feel like that so if I can chat away to someone for five minutes or sign something for their kids then I am up for that.
'I never imagined just how popular Gladiator would be but it has changed my life in a good way. It has been the megaphone I needed to get my fitness message out there.'
The Robert Gordon graduate added: 'Since becoming a Gladiator I have been asked to come and do lots of seminars and talks to young people about overcoming adversity and accepting challenges through fitness.
'I was already trying to spread this message but no one was listening to me but now they are. Sabre has opened the door for me to be the educator that I have always wanted to be.
'The exposure has also prompted me to start a new fitness initiative called 'Next Generation Fitness Kids' and this summer I will be running camps to teach primary school children about how keeping fit will help them to become healthy, hydrated and motivated.'
Gladiators is hopefully coming back for a third series but in between filming the hit BBC show Sheli has been busy winning more weightlifting titles.
The Crossfit champion said: 'I competed in the Easterns weightlifting championships last month in both the seniors and the masters 69kg categories and won both and set six new Scottish records.
'The next step for me is the British championships which I have qualified for and if I have success there I could be selected for the Commonwealth Games.
'Becoming a Commonwealth athlete has been a dream as underneath it all I am an athlete and I was selected as a Gladiator because I am an athlete.
'Life is pretty good at the moment and on my mum's advice I am trying to take a moment every now and then to appreciate it.'
Joining Sheli at the Daily Record Pride of Scotland Awards with P&O Cruises at the Glasgow Hilton on Monday night will be BGT legend Susan Boyle, Star Wars actor Denis Lawson, singers Nathan Evans, Calum Bowie and Cammy Barnes and Strictly's JJ Chalmers and Dr Punam Krishan.
Love Island's Paige Turley and Saint Phnx's Stevie Jukes will be going live from the red carpet and presenter Laura Anderson will be manning the Pride of Scotland bar.
First Minister John Swinney will also be there to celebrate the best of Scotland and there will be a performance from Britain's Got Talent finalist Vinnie McKee.
- The 2025 Pride of Scotland winners will be revealed in an 8-page pullout in Monday's Daily Record
- You can catch all the red carpet action on the Pride of Scotland Facebook, Instagram and YouTube page from 5.30pm on Monday night

Carol Kirkwood, 63, confesses there is 'no such thing as a perfect romance' after revealing her plans to retire and travel Europe with her husband Steve Randall, 49
has confessed there is 'no such thing as a perfect romance' after revealing she plans to retire in two years and her and travel Europe with her husband Steve Randall. The BBC weather veteran, 63, married police officer Steve, 49, in December 2023 - nine years after her divorce from property developer Jimmy Kirkwood. And now she has admitted that she thinks there is no such thing as the 'perfect romance' as she opened up about her divorce to the Daily Mirror. She told the publication: 'I feel sad when relationships break down. I was married before, and we got divorced, and it's always sad when that happens. 'But, of course, there isn't such a thing, I don't think, as the perfect romance - where you're never going to fall out or have cross words. Of course you are, that's life.' Carol and Steve - who have a 13-year age gap - got hitched in an 'intimate' wedding ceremony in Buckinghamshire in December 2023. Her comment comes after she revealed she hopes to retire in as little as two years so she can drive off into the sunset with her policeman husband. The TV star has been a fixture at the BBC for 27 years but has said she is planning a change of scene for her and Steve when she turns 65. Discussing her retirement hopes, Carol, who is also a published author, said: 'We fell in love with Majorca, which is where we went so I could research my fifth novel, Meet Me at Sunset, about a woman running away from a shattered love affair. 'Steve and I plan to escape and travel for some time when we retire, perhaps in a year or two. 'We'll travel in a camper van or get in the car, cross over to France and then just drive.' Carol, from Morar, Lochaber, was married to property developer Jimmy but the pair split in 2008 after 18 years of marriage, with the divorce finalised in 2012. She recently made a cheeky comment when asked about her second marriage, telling one newspaper: 'Love is lovelier the second time around. No disrespect to my first husband, but this is better.' Carol, who was on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, began her career at the BBC as a secretary before cross training with the Met Office and joining BBC News in 1998. She appears regularly across all of BBC Weather's output on both radio and TV and is the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast. The TV star also spoke about the age gap in her relationship, stating it makes no difference to her. She told Saga Magazine: 'Steve is 50 this year. Other people's opinions about an age gap don't matter - I don't feel he is younger than me.' She also said she believes that meeting him was fate. She said: 'We were at a function neither of us wanted to go to. It was a Sliding Doors moment - if I hadn't gone, we would never have met.' Discussing her relationship in another interview, she said: 'Love is lovelier the second time around. 'The wedding was the most perfect day. Storm Gerrit was raging outside and we didn't even notice. 'It was about us getting married rather than having a big, fancy wedding. We had no guests and wrote our own vows. 'When you are older, you know more what you want.'

Harry Styles launches sex toys range in surprising career move as fans go wild
The One Direction star has urged his adult fans to 'please yourself like you mean it' with a sex toy launch which dropped this afternoon. Harry Styles has sent fans into a frenzy after it's been announced he is dropping his own range of vibrating sex toys and lubricants in a shock career move. The One Direction star is set to release the sex toys through his brand Pleasing, which he previously launched as a unisex pop up in 2021 selling nail varnishes. Pleasing has since expanded and has become an online shop with a permanent retail deal with Selfridges in London. The shop currently sells a range of perfumes, lip balms, tote bags, t-shirts, scarves and now sex toys. Teasing a new launch on the website, Pleasing had informed fans: "Something Pleasing, Coming Soon.' Pretty innocuous, right? This page is intended for individuals 18 years of age and older." The website then confirmed the launch later today with the message: "An invitation to please yourself like you mean it. Pleasing Yourself is the result of our radical pursuit of that which feels good. Two intimacy tools, The Pleasing Double-Sided Vibrator and the Pleasing Lube, that put pleasure exactly where it belongs, in your hands." The cheeky collection, which is called Pleasing Yourself, will become available today on July 25 with The Please Double-Sided Vibrator and The Pleasing Lube, which have been 'designed as an open invitation to explore that which makes you feel good.' Pleasing stated that the £68 double vibrator is 'as intuitively functional as it is aesthetically distinct' and perfect to stimulate 'wherever feels good, from erogenous zones to anywhere craving extra attention.' Meanwhile, the £25 silicone lubricant promises to offer 'long-lasting moisture and a silky glide with zero glycerin'. The brand states the items are intended to be used by people 18 years or older. Both products are available to pre-order now. Pleasing encourages fans to be the first to sign up to learn more about the launch by providing their contact information. "On July 25th we'll be ready to give it to you online and in person at 251 Elizabeth Street, New York City." On social media, Pleasing also shared some promotional adverts which sent fans wild. The first post showed a business card for 'Something Pleasing' being slotted into a flip calendar. The caption read: "You forgot 251 Elizabeth Street N.Y.C. 25th of July." The second showed a clip of a finger tapping out Morse code on a Telegraph key with a glass of milk in the background. A woman is seen pressing her ear against a door and then gasps when the code finishes. The caption reads: "For those playing at home" with a New York address and a date for July 25- 27. A third video is of a woman dialling a phone. A mobile can then be heard vibrating on a couch before several other phones began vibrating, answered with a gasp or a moan. Finally, the shot cut to a red dial-up phone with what appears to be Harry's tattooed hand picking up the phone to answer the call. The caption says: "Say that again." His stylist Harry Lambert, who is als the brand's creative director, said: 'Pleasing Yourself is something we want our community to do — to love themselves, look after themselves, treat themselves, and please themselves. "Sexual wellness is such an important part of a person's overall well-being, and is something we're proud to embrace and speak about openly.' Fans rushed to social media to have their say on the launch. One wrote: "My bingo card did not include my first ever Harry Styles merch in 2025 being literal vibrators." Another chimed in: "Woah I missed a chapter Harry Styles is selling what now?" A third excited fan exclaimed: "Harry styles pleasing vibrator rumours got my kicking my feet (i will be buying it)!"
