Handmaid's Tale showrunners say show's ‘chilling' warning ‘was ignored' by Trump voters
The Handmaid's Tale showrunners have expressed concern about the current state of America, saying that 'women in our country have fewer rights now than when we started production in 2016.'
Hulu 's hit dystopian series — adapted from Margaret Atwood 's best-selling 1985 novel about a totalitarian society, Gilead, ruled by a fundamentalist regime that sees women as state property — returned last week for its sixth and final season.
The show, led by Elisabeth Moss, premiered in April 2017, months after President Donald Trump took office for the first time.
Since its debut, viewers have found some of the show's storylines eerily relevant to the U.S. political climate under the Trump administration — and even more so now, eight years later.
Speaking to ex-CNN reporter Oliver Darcy for his Status newsletter, showrunner Eric Tuchman admitted: 'No, I don't think any of us could have predicted how closely the show would maintain its relevance and continue to reflect real events.
'The series has been called a cautionary tale about what can happen when power is abused and people's rights and freedoms are stripped away,' he continued.
'But that warning was ignored, apparently, by the majority of voters, and Roe v. Wade was overturned. Women in our country have fewer rights now than when we started production in 2016,' Tuchman added.
He clarified that while the writers' room never sets out to 'make a political statement or write the show in response to headlines,' he suggested that 'the fact that their struggles on the show can sometimes feel eerily relevant to the real world is the result of us trying to write honestly about power, resistance, and how fragile our democracy and freedom are.'
Tuchman was joined by his co-showrunner Yahlin Chang, who added that the show's depiction of how democratic backsliding can happen so quickly 'is chilling.'
'It's also true — democracies backslide and fail all the time,' Chang said. 'Seventy percent of the world's population lives in an autocracy. In our show, America as we know it was just this exceptional, temporary, extremely fragile experiment. Living in the world of Gilead imaginatively for this many years, I'm actually shocked that American democracy has lasted for so long.'
The sixth season welcomes the return of Moss as lead character June, whose 'unyielding spirit and determination pull her back into the fight to take down Gilead,' according to an official logline. 'This final chapter of June's journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom.'
By the end of the series, Tuchman said he hopes audiences recognize that the show is a 'story of hope, courage, and resilience.'
'It's a survival story,' he said. 'I hope people feel inspired and empowered by [June's] journey.'
The remaining episodes of The Handmaid's Tale season six will be released on Tuesdays on Hulu before concluding on May 27. The final season premieres in the U.K. on May 3 on Channel 4 and on Amazon Prime Video.

"I'm devastated and terrified that so many women and so many girls are going to die because of this," Olivia said on stage ahead of singing with Lily. "I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who have showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don't care about freedom." Olivia revealed headlining Glastonbury was a "dream" for her. Posting on her Instagram story, the singer said: 'Headlining glasto has been one of my biggest dreams for so long. Truly can't believe this! So grateful and sooo excited. Hope to see you there.' Before her music career, she was an actor on Disney Channel, starring in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as well as the television series Bizaardvark, which follows two best friends as they create music videos and share vlogs on their website.

Taking to the stage in a short white corseted dress, the American looked in awe of the sheer volume of people who had came to see her on the Pyramid Stage. Playing her biggest hits, including Drivers Licence, Vampire ant Traitor, Olivia showcased her talents with flawless vocals and impressive piano skills. However, it was a surprise guest appearance that had fans gobsmacked. The American singer songwriter welcomed singer-songwriter Robert Smith to perform a double of duets. And it was their performance of Friday I'm In Love that had fans gasping. Dan has created a new tanning salon in Benfleet, Essex, called Paradise. The couple were spotted there over the weekend - with Jac sporting a t-shirt adorned with the name of the new shop across the back. Dan shared highlights of a launch event while also teasing the official opening day. Sharing photos and video footage on Instagram, he wrote: "Thank you to everyone that came down today for our opening party of @paradiseinbenfleet We will be finally opening Wednesday 2nd July been a long time coming." Jacqueline reacted to the post writing: "Congratulations" alongside an excited emoji. While many other friends and followers reacted to Dan's post to offer further messages of congratulations. Jacqueline and Dan have weathered many storms over the course of their 12 year romance. They met at an awards show in 2013 and began dating soon after. They announced they were expecting their first child together the following year and their daughter, Ella, was born in February 2015. Four months later, in June 2015, the pair revealed they had become engaged. Dan shared the news with a social media post explaining he got down on one knee during a trip to Greece. He shared at the time: "She said YES!!! I am the luckiest man in the world to be marrying the woman of my dreams." After tying the knot in June 2017, the couple announced they were expecting a second baby together in January 2018. However, in May that year, they suffered their first bump - with reports hinting they had broken up while Jac was still pregnant. In June 2018, second daughter Mia arrived and in October that year it was revealed they had got back together - only for Dan to endure several claims he had been unfaithful in 2019. Despite repeated remarks their marriage was in trouble, the couple managed to remain close in the years since. But at the beginning of this year, there were reports they had broken up and were putting their family home on the market. Dan and Jacqueline ultimately hit back at the claims, however reports in March claimed Dan had moved out. However, they rekindled their romance in April when they took a "make or break" holiday to Mexico. A fellow holidaymaker told The Sun that they appeared to be getting on well, commenting: "Dan and Jac looked like any normal couple. There were a few Brits at the resort, but no one recognised them and they were left alone to relax and enjoy quality time together."
