Jo Malone defends Dubai's human rights record after relocating

Telegraph11-05-2025
Jo Malone has defended Dubai's human rights record after she became 'disillusioned' with Britain and relocated to the Middle East.
The fragrance entrepreneur has lived in the suite of a five-star hotel in Dubai since 2021.
Malone, 61, described Sheikh Mohammed, the city's ruler, as 'the most wonderful leader' and said the UK and United States weren't perfect either.
She and her husband Gary Willcox are part of the now 240,000 or so who call the emirate their home.
Speaking to The Sunday Times about the human rights record and attitudes towards homosexuality, the perfumer said: 'I believe every person has the right to be whoever they want to be, but you think the UK has got everything right, and the US has got everything right?.
'Honestly, you tell me a place you can go and live where you can tick every box 100 per cent.'
She added that you had to respect the fact 'you are in someone else's country' before describing Sheikh Mohammed as 'just the most wonderful leader'.
Malone, whose visa entitles her to live for up to 10 years in the city where there is no personal income or inheritance tax, hopes she can continue 'beyond' that period.
On the tax systems back in Britain, the businesswoman who was raised on a council estate said: 'What happens is, you start to become disillusioned.
'And when you're working hard, you're paying your taxes, and then your child gets sick or your mother gets sick, and you take them to the hospital and you're waiting three days on a trolley.'
'I moved for opportunity'
She added that other Britons were also making the move 'like there's no tomorrow' because of the amount of infrastructure being built.
Malone said: 'I was ahead of the curve.
'I didn't move for all the obvious reasons. It was for me as a person. I moved for opportunity.'
Malone is now estimated to be worth £15 million after setting up her luxury perfume, candle and lotion business in 1990.
In 1999, she sold the company to Estée Lauder for millions before going on to launch Jo Loves in 2011 when her highly tuned sense of smell returned after overcoming cancer.

Chelsea on verge of selling unwanted star in shock £40m transfer deal to Saudi club Al Nassr who are offering huge wages

CHELSEA are nearing completion on a deal that would see Premier League flop Joao Felix join Saudi club Al Nassr. The Portuguese seemed to be on the verge of returning to his boyhood club Benfica before the middle-eastern outfit stepped into the ring. 3 3 Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano says a deal is at its final stages as the clubs near agreement on a fee reportedly in the region of £40million. Felix, 25, has already given his approval of the project and his personal terms. Al Nassr's offer is reported to be a five-year contract with an annual salary of £22million, or £420,000 a week. This salary, by comparison, would make him the second-highest earner in the Premier League behind Erling Haaland's £500,000 weekly wage. His wage would even equate to £20,000 per-week more than Mohamed Salah's new Liverpool contract. Should the move go through, he would be reunited with his Portuguese national team colleague Cristiano Ronaldo. Joao Felix was the subject of the fourth most expensive transfer ever when he made the move from Benfica to Atletico Madrid as a teenager in 2019. After a falling out with the management in Madrid, Felix had loan spells with Chelsea and Barcelona before the Blues made a £42million gamble on him last summer. 3 Between his two stints at the club, Felix has made 40 total appearances for the Blues, scoring 11 goals. Chelsea were at a loss with Joao Felix this window after a disastrous loan spell in Milan last season. The club were set to take a huge loss on his return to Benfica, who were reportedly looking to pay half the fee that Chelsea paid for the forward at around £22million. Al Nassr's improved offer puts them in good stead to steal the star from under the Portuguese giant's nose, as Chelsea look to recoup almost the full fee they paid for him a year ago.

BAE's AI wingman fires up Typhoon fighter jets

RAF 'Top Gun' pilots could soon have a high-tech wingman in the cockpit – with AI helping to select targets and assess threats. Defence contractor BAE Systems is overhauling its Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. The AI is being trialled in a flight simulator at BAE's site in Warton, Lancashire, to help pilots assess 'threat information'. It is hoped the technology will be installed by the 2030s. BAE believes the Typhoon, introduced in 2003 as a partnership between Britain, Germany and Italy, can last into the 2060s. Its new technology includes a much larger control display for pilots who currently have to monitor three screens. Modifications include counter-electronic warfare measures and a helmet providing a 360-degree virtual display of the skies, projected onto the visor. Paul Smith, head of Typhoon strategy at BAE and an ex-Typhoon pilot, said: 'There's still going to be a human in control, but the AI is just helping the pilot as decision maker.' BAE has been working with Swedish firm Avioniq to develop the AI tool, called Rattlesnaq. It can map areas where there is a risk of enemy missile fire beyond a pilot's visual range, recommend a safe path and suggest targets. Typhoons are in service in the Middle East and eastern Europe, and provide rapid-response cover around the UK. Smith said: 'When threats are constantly changing, you need live, on-the-edge situational awareness to enable pilots to operate effectively. Mikael Grev, co-founder of Avioniq and a Swedish air force pilot for 17 years, said the AI 'means a single aircraft can deliver greater force-multiplying effect, defeating a wider range of threats more efficiently'. He adds: 'Among western militaries it is unique and really innovative. I thought it would be a good idea to create a decision support system that can keep track of everything.' BAE, which reports its half-year results on Wednesday, received a boost to its Typhoon business last week when the UK signed a multi-billion pound deal to sell the jets to Turkey.
