PM Modi to visit Bihar's Madhubani today to launch various development projects worth Rs 13,480 crore
According to a press communique issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone and inaugurate a slew of development projects worth Rs 13,480 crore during his visit.
In addition, PM Modi will flag off the Amrit Bharat Express and the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail on the occasion. He will also confer the Special Category National Panchayat Awards 2025.
However, as a mark of respect following the recent terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, there will be no ceremonial felicitation of the Prime Minister or other dignitaries during the event. A native of Bihar's Rohtas district, Manish Ranjan—an Intelligence Bureau official posted in Hyderabad—was among those killed in the attack.
This is PM Modi's first visit to any state since the Pahalgam terror strike, and his second since February this year.
His visit to Madhubani, located in the culturally significant Mithilanchal region, comes months ahead of the assembly elections in Bihar, scheduled for October-November. Political observers view the visit as an attempt to consolidate voter support for the NDA, which secured 60 per cent of seats in north Bihar during the 2020 assembly elections.
The Election Commission has already begun preparations, with a two-day training and capacity-building programme for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) from Bihar commencing on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, security has been stepped up in Madhubani and neighbouring districts. Personnel from the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) have been deployed in the region to monitor the activities of sleeper cell operatives.
A senior police officer said, 'Security agencies are ready to deal with any exigency. Search operation has been launched in Madhubani and Darbhanga districts as part of the policing. The two neighbouring districts have a history of providing shelter to operatives of sleeper cells of various terror groups.'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Maldives last week, after an invitation by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu to be a special guest for the country's 60th Independence Day, signalled the full return of relations to the closeness they held during the previous Ibrahim Solih government. Although the two leaders had not gotten off to the best start in 2023, after Mr. Muizzu's surprise win, backed by an 'India Out' campaign — this was followed by a 'Boycott Maldives' social media campaign in India — they have been on the mend for the past year. During Mr. Muizzu's 2024 state visit to India, India had announced measures including lines of credit and a currency swap arrangement to support the Maldives during its economic troubles. Mr. Muizzu reflected gratitude when he described India's role in the Maldives as 'pivotal' and Mr. Modi reciprocated the warmth. India announced a line of credit worth $565 million (₹4,850 crore) and reduced the annual debt burden for Maldives on previous Indian lines of credit by 40%. There was also the launch of India-Maldives Free Trade Agreement negotiations, which will be a significant driver of future engagement. There was the signing too of MoUs for cooperation in fisheries, meteorological sciences, digital solutions and pharma, as well as a digital and rupee-rufiyaa national currency payments agreement. Over the past six decades, India has cultivated a strong security partnership with the Maldives, including trilateral national security consultations with Sri Lanka, and it is significant that after Mr. Modi's visit, Mr. Muizzu welcomed Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for a state visit. The Maldives visit was also a reaffirmation of the importance of India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy, at a time when Indian foreign policy is facing headwinds linked to the U.S.'s trade tariffs and the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. The conflict with Pakistan after the Pahalgam attacks, and tensions with Bangladesh have engaged the government's attention. New Delhi has also been preoccupied with reaching out to different countries, following Operation Sindoor, but did not send delegations to neighbouring countries. It is heartening that New Delhi is preparing to welcome Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, who has not been invited to India since he took office a year ago. A commemorative stamp by the Maldives for its national day celebrations showed traditional Indian and Maldives boats, which Mr. Modi described as a reflection of India and the Maldives being not just neighbours 'but also fellow voyagers on a shared journey'. In a time of global economic turmoil, a closer engagement with the neighbours — one that shores up their economic needs and supports their plans for development where possible — is essential.

Over 26,000 bottles of cough syrup seized, 1 arrested
Cuttack: The special task force (STF) in collaboration with the drugs control department seized 26,658 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup from courier hubs in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. The operation, conducted on Aug 1, led to the arrest of Ansuman Abhijit Sahoo, alias Raja, from Bharatpur in Bhubaneswar. Acting on a tip-off, authorities raided a private firm in Badambadi, Cuttack, and another in Mancheswar, Bhubaneswar. They recovered 13,158 bottles from Cuttack and 13,500 from Bhubaneswar, each containing 100ml of cough syrup. "Total market value of the seized consignment is estimated at Rs 52.78 lakh," said Dharmadev Puhan, assistant drugs controller, Cuttack. Sahoo was apprehended while attempting to receive the consignment. Investigations revealed that he had forged documents of a pharmaceutical company in Cuttack to procure the cough syrup for unauthorised sale. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, 1985, and Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Authorities are conducting further investigations to find out if more persons are involved in the operation. The seized cough syrup was manufactured by a company in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. "We are intensifying surveillance across the state to curb the misuse of pharmaceutical narcotics. More coordinated actions will follow," said DSP (STF), Pradeep Kumar Rout.

Multi-crore fraud case: Haris held at Mum airport
Kozhikode: IUML district panchayat member T P Haris, who is facing charges for swindling crores from people, was nabbed at Mumbai airport on Friday. Police registered a case against Haris based on a complaint lodged by six persons with district police chief. Police said as many as 200 persons were defrauded by Haris to the tune of Rs 25 crore. Haris, who went to the Gulf on a visiting visa, was detained by immigration wing upon his arrival at Mumbai airport. Police had issued a lookout circular against him. Malappuram SHO Vishnu P said that police officers went to Mumbai to take him into custody. It is alleged that Haris carried out the fraud by promising people that the agencies which took contracts for implementing various projects, like the distribution of three-wheelers, supply of surgical equipment to hospitals under the district panchayat, installation of solar panels etc, were under his control. He promised high returns if they invested money to implement the projects. Haris is a member of the district panchayat from Makkaraparamba division and Youth League district joint secretary. Following the allegations, IUML expelled him from the primary membership of the party.
