New RM400,000 bridge brings relief to Orang Asli in Gua Musang

GUA MUSANG: The construction of a new RM400,000 bridge across Sungai Balar in Pos Balar, set to begin this month, has brought much-needed relief to more than 1,000 Orang Asli residents in the area.
Orang Asli Village Development and Safety Committee chairman Hanan Anjang said he was grateful that the villagers' difficulties had finally received the attention of the authorities.
"We are truly thankful to the Department of Orang Asli Development (Jakoa) for its concern over the plight of the Orang Asli community in this remote area," he said when contacted.
Hanan said the original structure, a steel suspension bridge, collapsed three months ago after Sungai Balar overflowed following heavy rain in March.
"Since then, crossing the river has been very challenging.
"We have had to carry motorcycles by hand just to reach Gua Musang town, and many of our children have been unable to attend school.
"Over the past three months, we built two makeshift wooden bridges, but both were swept away by rising river levels during heavy rains," he said.
Although construction of the permanent bridge, under a design-and-build contract, is expected to begin this month, Hanan said the villagers have agreed to rebuild a temporary crossing in the meantime.
Hanan added that the RM400,000 project is expected to be completed within three months.
"To ease movement for now, especially for school children, we will reconstruct a temporary bridge across Sungai Balar," he said.
It was reported that Jakoa would expedite the construction of the new bridge to replace the original structure, which was washed away by strong currents on March 9.
Jakoa director-general Datuk Sapiah Mohd Nor had said that the location, terrain, and weather conditions would be carefully considered during the construction process.

Food stalls at Pantai Siring, Melaka damaged in early morning storm

JASIN: About eight food stalls, including seven at the Pantai Siring food court in Pulai near here, were damaged in a storm that struck the area early Sunday morning (June 29). The food court's owner, Noraini Mat Diah, 63, said the incident was first noticed by guests staying at a nearby resort around 1am. She said visitors reported seeing what appeared to be a whirlwind, despite only light rain at the time. The storm destroyed the food court's roof structure, damaged its electrical wiring and brought down a nearby electricity pole. "Repairs may take up to two weeks," she said, estimating losses at over RM10,000. Noraini said the storm not only disrupted the traders' livelihoods but also affected tourism activities in Pantai Siring, a popular destination during weekend and holidays. Food vendor Siti Roslida Mat Rusli, 39, said she had just closed her stall at 11pm and was on her way home when she was informed of the incident through the traders' group chat. "My husband and I rushed back to the stall and found tables and chairs scattered, and the roof partially torn off. Due to this incident, we may not be able to operate for a while, which will definitely affect our livelihood," she said. Another vendor, Nor Hazalina Abd Rashid, 44, said her putu bambu stall was badly damaged, resulting in losses of over RM3,000. She said she was in Kuala Lumpur when she received the news and immediately returned, only to find her zinc-roofed stall in ruins. "This stall is our main source of income as the area attracts many tourists, especially on weekends. I was supposed to open for business today, but the stall is destroyed. I can only accept this as fate," she said. - Bernama

TEMERLOH: The Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has urged the state government to accelerate the disbursement of financial aid to families affected by a storm that damaged over 200 homes here last weekend. The Sultan said only RM300 from the District Disaster Fund (TMD) had been distributed so far, with a remaining RM700 still pending. 'I hope this can be channelled soon. The RM5,000 repair assistance should also be expedited,' he said after visiting and extending aid to the affected residents today. The assistance was also delivered by Tengku Panglima Raja Brig Jen Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah and Tengku Arif Bendahara Tengku Muhammad Iskandar Ri'ayatuddin Shah. Al-Sultan Abdullah also expressed sympathy to those affected, noting that the disaster struck just three days after Hari Raya Aidiladha. 'It is painful not to be able to celebrate Aidiladha properly, but this is Allah's will. Every hardship has its wisdom and we must remain patient,' he said. The storm damaged 210 homes across four mukims namely Perak 2, Bangau, Mentakab 1 and Mentakab 2. The Sultan also extended condolences to the families of two teenage girls killed in a road accident in Temerloh on June 11. In a separate remark, the Sultan warned against following teachings that have been declared deviant by the Pahang Mufti Department, particularly the Ahmadiah sect. 'Why are there still people trying to spread this? We must hold firm to the teachings of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah. This is what we've inherited from our elders and what the majority of Malaysians believe in,' he said.
