Taxi association slams police after passengers shot in KZN

The Citizen24-06-2025
Two taxi passengers were shot in Umhlali, KZN, last night after police allegedly mistook their vehicle for one involved in a hijacking.
The North Coast Courier reports that, according to initial accounts, members of the Police Emergency Services task team identified a taxi matching the description of a hijacked vehicle and attempted to intercept it.
Police spokesperson Captain Ntathu Ndlovu confirmed that Umhlali police are investigating two counts of attempted murder.
'Police received information that a stolen vehicle was spotted on the N2, resulting in a high-speed chase. After various unsuccessful attempts to stop the vehicle and observing its blatant disregard for road safety, officers opened fire to bring it to a halt,' said Ndlovu.
No arrests have been made, and no fatalities were reported.
Among the injured were a 39-year-old man, critically wounded after being shot in the chest, and a 26-year-old woman who was shot in the leg.
The owner of the taxi, who asked to be identified only as Mr Ndlovu, said the driver noticed a vehicle following him after dropping off a passenger in Shaka's Head.
As he approached the Umhlali traffic lights, shots were fired.
'That's when he stopped. But I'm told the police continued firing even after the taxi had halted. The vehicle had number plates, passengers and association stickers. They could have just pulled it over,' said Mr Ndlovu.
Richard David, the spokesperson for the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association, condemned the shooting.
'There was no need to open fire. Taxi drivers are stopped regularly. This was reckless and now innocent people are injured. It could have been avoided,' he said.

As teens spend more time online, many parents are asking: How can I help protect my child without feeling like I'm spying? Fortunately, there are tools in place to give parents peace of mind, support safer interactions, and empower teens to make thoughtful decisions online. Instagram has introduced a suite of safety tools designed specifically for families, providing parents with more peace of mind while empowering teens to make smarter, safer choices online. Whether you're new to the platform or want to stay informed, there are essential safety tools every parent should know about: Teen Accounts Teen Accounts were designed to support parents better and give them peace of mind that their teens have the right protections in place. They have built-in protections that limit who can contact them and the content they see. By default, teen accounts are set to private and teens under 16 can only change this default setting with help from a parent or guardian. As part of Teen Accounts, Instagram offers supervision features that allow parents to stay involved in their teen's experience on the app. With this feature, parents can monitor the time their teen spends on Instagram, view who they follow and who follows them, receive updates when their teen reports accounts or content, and set daily time limits or scheduled breaks to help manage usage effectively. Daily time limit The daily time limit feature is also part of Teen Accounts. It allows parents and teens to set limits on app usage, encouraging healthier and more mindful engagement over time. Block, restrict and report feature Teen Accounts include tools that allow teens to block or restrict people they don't want to interact with and report harmful content or behaviour. Restricted users won't be able to see when your teen is online or if they've read messages. Sensitive content control This safety feature, also available through Teen Accounts, allows users to filter out potentially upsetting or mature content in Explore and other areas. Educational Family Centre Instagram's Family Centre is an educational hub that provides articles and guidance to help parents have meaningful conversations with their teens about their online experiences and how to make time spent online a positive experience. The hub focuses on providing parents with practical tools from online safety experts, organisations and academics on everything from bullying to cybersecurity. Parents Parents have been urged to explore these features with their teens and use them as a starting point for open, ongoing conversations about their online life. When parents and teens navigate these digital spaces together, everyone wins. ALSO READ: NAG magazine launches winter edition with Doom: The Dark Ages on cover [VIDEO]

Durban North CPF warns of ‘SAPS donation scam'

THE Durban North CPF has warned residents of a donation scam that has resurfaced in the area. The scam involves a man purporting to be a member of the SAPS asking for cash donations for various causes. According to the CPF PRO, Darryl Oliver, the man, who uses the name 'Captain Govender', has targeted residents in Sunningdale and Durban North, however, residents did not fall for the scam. Also read: Headless body found on N2 near Blackburn Village 'We put out a warning in October last year and sadly this scam has come up again so we are warning residents in the area to be wary. In the latest incident he claimed to be an officer from the Durban North station. The individual goes around, sometimes with a letter complete with a SAPS logo at the top. The letter he presents claims to be for raising funds or collecting donations and asks for a donation of R20. 'Other variations of this scam include it being a social feeding scheme, sandwich drive or similar fundraising – there are also some slight variations to his rank or station. The man is neither a member of the SAPS nor authorised by them to conduct fundraising or food drives. We ask residents that should you encounter the suspect not to give him any money,' he said. Oliver also urged the public to contact the CPF (063 643 7803) or station commander at the Durban North SAPS should they have any concerns regarding the authenticity of any SAPS letter.
