Taxi association slams police after passengers shot in KZN
The North Coast Courier reports that, according to initial accounts, members of the Police Emergency Services task team identified a taxi matching the description of a hijacked vehicle and attempted to intercept it.
Police spokesperson Captain Ntathu Ndlovu confirmed that Umhlali police are investigating two counts of attempted murder.
'Police received information that a stolen vehicle was spotted on the N2, resulting in a high-speed chase. After various unsuccessful attempts to stop the vehicle and observing its blatant disregard for road safety, officers opened fire to bring it to a halt,' said Ndlovu.
No arrests have been made, and no fatalities were reported.
Among the injured were a 39-year-old man, critically wounded after being shot in the chest, and a 26-year-old woman who was shot in the leg.
The owner of the taxi, who asked to be identified only as Mr Ndlovu, said the driver noticed a vehicle following him after dropping off a passenger in Shaka's Head.
As he approached the Umhlali traffic lights, shots were fired.
'That's when he stopped. But I'm told the police continued firing even after the taxi had halted. The vehicle had number plates, passengers and association stickers. They could have just pulled it over,' said Mr Ndlovu.
Richard David, the spokesperson for the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association, condemned the shooting.
'There was no need to open fire. Taxi drivers are stopped regularly. This was reckless and now innocent people are injured. It could have been avoided,' he said.

Durban North CPF warns of ‘SAPS donation scam'
THE Durban North CPF has warned residents of a donation scam that has resurfaced in the area. The scam involves a man purporting to be a member of the SAPS asking for cash donations for various causes. According to the CPF PRO, Darryl Oliver, the man, who uses the name 'Captain Govender', has targeted residents in Sunningdale and Durban North, however, residents did not fall for the scam. Also read: Headless body found on N2 near Blackburn Village 'We put out a warning in October last year and sadly this scam has come up again so we are warning residents in the area to be wary. In the latest incident he claimed to be an officer from the Durban North station. The individual goes around, sometimes with a letter complete with a SAPS logo at the top. The letter he presents claims to be for raising funds or collecting donations and asks for a donation of R20. 'Other variations of this scam include it being a social feeding scheme, sandwich drive or similar fundraising – there are also some slight variations to his rank or station. The man is neither a member of the SAPS nor authorised by them to conduct fundraising or food drives. We ask residents that should you encounter the suspect not to give him any money,' he said. Oliver also urged the public to contact the CPF (063 643 7803) or station commander at the Durban North SAPS should they have any concerns regarding the authenticity of any SAPS letter.
