Watch: Ghana MPs honour PM Modi by donning Indian attire; wear pagdi and bandhgala suit to parliament

Time of India03-07-2025
NEW DELHI: Two members of Ghana's Parliament in a symbolic show of solidarity and admiration for Indian culture donned traditional Indian attire as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the House during his historic visit on Thursday.
As Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin concluded PM Modi's address, he pointed out the gesture with a touch of humour and warmth. 'I recognise that the honourable member is itching to visit India. I want to assure you that I will not hold my pen from approving your visit... My attention has been drawn to the fact that he is not alone and has a partner... I thank the members for showing their love for India, its people and their culture,' said Bagbin, drawing applause from the House.
One MP was seen wearing a pagdi and a traditional Bandhgala suit, while a female Parliamentarian proudly displayed her Indian attire, capturing the attention of both lawmakers and Prime Minister Modi himself.
The moment added a cultural charm to an already significant occasion, as PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to address Ghana's Parliament in over three decades. His speech was attended by senior Ghanaian leaders, members of the Council of State, the diplomatic corps, civil society groups, political representatives, and the Indian diaspora in Ghana.
'It is a privilege to be in Ghana — a land that radiates the spirit of democracy, dignity, and resilience. As the representative of the world's largest democracy, I bring with me the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians,' Modi said in his address.
He lauded Ghana as a beacon of democratic values and emphasised the growing strength of India-Ghana ties. 'Africa's goals are our priorities. Our approach is to grow together as equals,' he said, reiterating India's support for Africa's Agenda 2063 development framework.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi was conferred Ghana's highest civilian award — Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — by President John Dramani Mahama. Modi described the honour as a recognition of India's youth, its vibrant diversity, and the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations.
'It is a matter of great pride and honour... I humbly accept this award on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians,' PM Modi said.
A statement from President Mahama's office noted the award recognised Modi's leadership, global influence, and efforts to foster deeper bilateral ties. It also highlighted his contributions to global development and spiritual diplomacy.
The two leaders held extensive talks during the visit and agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership, further deepening cooperation in trade, capacity building, and regional development.

Plywood drone from Belarus crashes in Lithuania, causing alarm

NATO Baltic Air Policing jets were dispatched to the area but were recalled after the object fell to the ground around 1 km (0.6 miles) from the border, armed forces spokesperson Gintautas Ciunis told a press conference. Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas and Speaker of the Parliament Saulius Skvernelis were briefly brought to bomb shelters in response to the object entering Lithuanian airspace, according to their spokespersons. VILNIUS (Reuters) -An unmanned aircraft built from plywood and foam flew into NATO member Lithuania from Belarus and crashed, causing alarm before authorities determined it was not dangerous, Lithuanian officials said on Thursday. 'The object does not pose any danger now, but we don't yet know what was its purpose,' he said. Investigations were continuing to determine what it was for and where it came from. Lithuania's defence ministry said in a statement the object appeared to be 'homemade'. Images and a video shared by the army showed a winged device resembling a small airplane lying on grass. Its body was cut open in two places, revealing a wooden interior compartment with wiring inside. An emailed border guard statement said a preliminary assessment was that it was made of plywood and foam, and that there were no indications it was carrying anything. In September last year, a Russian military drone carrying explosives likely to have been intended for use in Ukraine crashed in Latvia some 90 km (60 miles) from the border with Belarus. CM writes to PM to save Nimisha Priya from death row

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene with Yemeni authorities and save Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who has been sentenced to be executed in Yemen. In a letter to Mr. Modi on Sunday, Mr. Vijayan appealed to him to take up the matter and intervene with the authorities concerned to save the life of Nimisha Priya, 'considering the fact that this is a case deserving sympathy'. In the letter, he also attached a letter he had written to the Union Minister for External Affairs on March 24, 2025. In the March letter, Mr. Vijayan had written that the aged mother of Nimisha Priya had been making fervent appeals to save the life of her daughter. In an earlier letter dated February 6, 2025, he had requested intervention from Union Government for saving the life of the young woman, who has been found guilty for a crime committed by her as a teenager. Nimisha Priya, who hails from Kollengode in Palakkad district of Kerala, was convicted in 2020 for the murder of her Yemeni business partner in July 2017. She was allegedly subjected to severe abuse, and in an attempt to defend herself, the man had died. Nimisha Priya now faces the death penalty. As per Yemeni law, clemency is possible only through blood money. Her execution has been reportedly fixed for July 16.
