True grit: Limbless Jafri defies limits to inspire and earn a living
With unwavering determination, Jafri has made it his life's mission to change negative perceptions of people with disabilities (OKU), showing that grit and self-belief matter more than physical limitations.
"Rather than expecting sympathy, my condition gives me strength. I don't see it as a hindrance, but as a motivation to prove that we, too, are capable.
"I'm also blessed to have a supportive wife, Nur Aika Mansor, 30, who accepted me wholeheartedly and has been my pillar of strength.
"As long as I am able, I want to be responsible for providing for my family. Being an OKU has pushed me to do my best, just like anyone else," he said at his home in Panchor.
Affectionately known as "Pak Do", Jafri said he and his wife tried various ventures, including selling second-hand clothes online during the Covid-19 pandemic but had to stop in 2022 due to poor demand.
"Even then, we never gave up. We started selling 'keropok' by the roadside for about a year. Then, in November last year, my wife's family offered us a space at their burger stall. That's where we started our burger business," he said.
Jafri also works as a helper at the stall, earning RM65 per day. Together, the couple now sells up to 50 burgers daily at RM3 each, a feat he takes pride in, despite his physical challenges.
"Initially, the hardest part was separating the burger patties and placing them on the hot plate, since I don't have fingers like everyone else. But over time, I got used to it and can now do it on my own. My wife helps by wrapping the burgers," he said.
The 11th of 12 siblings, Jafri said they hope to one day open a kiosk or a small shop of their own.
To supplement their income, he also takes up small jobs repairing jeans, and processes and sells traditional 'bekok' (dried fermented fish).
While Jafri receives a monthly RM450 allowance from the Welfare Department, he does not want to rely solely on government aid.
"I hope my story inspires other OKU not to give up on life. Don't let your condition become an excuse. With effort, prayer and the right attitude, there is always a way forward," he said.

Banking sector viewed as undervalued
PETALING JAYA: Kenanga Research believes the banking sector is fundamentally at a bargain level, as the share prices of the banking stocks are reflecting return on equities commensurating with a loan growth for the system of 3.4% – which was essentially levels seen during Covid-19. 'This, thus, gives us confidence that the banks are undervalued. In the very immediate term, should bull-steepening bias materialise, historically it would be an uphill task for banks to outperform during such a stretch,' it said. Kenanga Research said Bank Negara's overnight policy rate (OPR) cut last week came as a negative surprise to its forecast. However, it shared that based on historical patterns, other than during the Covid-19 period, the FBM KLCI has always bounced back higher post-rate cut on a 12-month basis and the most reliable sector to see outperformance would be banks. It has kept its 1,655 year-end FBM KLCI target for now. The research house's top pick remained AMMB Holdings Bhd , which has prioritised profitability over market share goals. Kenanga Research pointed out that banks' valuations are still appealing, although the immediate catalyst of averting a rate cut didn't play out. 'Our market earnings estimate post-OPR cut is revised lower to 3% from 3.5%, with the adjustments purely made from the perspective of an earnings cut due to putting through net interest margin impact for the banks, which ranged from 0% to 1.7% for financial year 2025 (FY25) and 1% to 4% for FY26 on an annualised basis. 'However, we haven't given any compensating benefit of non-interest operating income or NOII uplift to the banks, which could materialise should banks crystalise some of their bond holdings that may have experienced positive revaluation gains. 'This could spell some upside to our banks' earnings forecast of 3.7%,' it added. Overall, the research house continued to prefer laggard plays within key sectors, as liquidity shored up is being put to use. It said this benefits the likes of YTL Power International Bhd , IJM Corp Bhd , Sime Darby Property Bhd , IHH Healthcare Bhd and CIMB Group Holdings Bhd . Meanwhile, Kenanga Research said utilities generally beat even telecommunications companies, which were relatively steady, while also outstripping the banking sector's returns. 'We also highlight that the utilities sector is not short of catalysts in the near term in the form of new capacity bids and brownfield opportunities. 'We believe Tenaga Nasional Bhd and Malakoff Corp Bhd are strong contenders due to their existing brownfield assets. We also expect YTL Power to be keen to explore new power plant projects,' the research house added. It pointed out that Gas Malaysia Bhd makes a strong argument for being able to offer attractive dividend yields of 5.7%. Kenanga Research also said a rate cut without expectation of an economic contraction is bullish for real estate investment trusts (REITs), but largely priced in current levels of Malaysian Government Securities or MGS. 'Risk to the REIT sector earnings growth would be from the implementation of the service tax, although a rate cut without gross domestic product growth cut would likely be positive for the sector,' it explained.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said these initiatives were introduced to ensure the well-being of armed forces personnel, focusing not only on assets but also on education and skills for their families. "The first initiative is the e-Perkasa Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 Programme, a collaboration between Yayasan LTAT and Sultan Idris Education University, involving 652 students who are children of armed forces personnel attending schools outside military camps. "Through this programme, each selected student has been provided with a device for free, sponsored by BHIC AeroServices Sdn Bhd, Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd and the Malaysian Armed Forces Trading Corporation," he said at the launch of Yayasan LTAT's 2025 Educational Initiatives. Khaled said the second initiative is the SPM Elite Touch Programme, which involves 658 selected students from six in-camp schools. The students will benefit from activities such as tuition classes, answering technique workshops and career guidance programmes. "The third initiative is the Armed Forces Family Skills Programme, which extends education and skills development to the tertiary level for armed forces personnel, including members of the Armed Forces Family Welfare Association and their children. The programme offers 22 short courses, including culinary arts and make-up. "Those pursuing studies in Mara institutions in the field of technical and vocational education and training or equivalent will receive tuition sponsorship of up to RM3,000 per person. This is a collaboration between Yayasan LTAT and the Polytechnic Education and Community Colleges Department, with funding support from Pharmaniaga Bhd as the main sponsor," he said. The fourth initiative, Khaled said, is the Madani Education Savings Programme, a collaboration between Yayasan LTAT and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation. "Through this programme, 3,775 Year One pupils, who are children of active military personnel, received a one-off contribution of RM50 each in the form of an SSPN Prime savings account, amounting to a total contribution of RM188,750," he said. The fifth initiative is the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Programme, where Yayasan LTAT has formed a strategic partnership with Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). "TalentCorp will help boost awareness about the importance of STEM and provide career guidance, while USM will develop STEM learning modules and act as a coordinator with public universities to implement this programme in in-camp schools." Khaled witnessed the presentation of corporate social responsibility contributions amounting to RM3.2 million from Affin Bank Bhd, BHPetrol and Kemalak Group Sdn Bhd to strengthen the future of the defence generation. Present were Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, Defence Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali, LTAT chairman General (Rtd) Tan Sri Azizan Ariffin, army chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan and Yayasan LTAT chief executive Datuk Dr Mohd Nizar Sudin. ends
