One U.S. Army veteran with over two decades of experience is inspiring the next generation.
Retired Colonel Philip Hoyle played a crucial role in operations like Desert Shield and Desert Storm, earning numerous accolades.
Colonel Hoyle initially planned to serve for four years but ended up dedicating 22 years to the military.
TAMPA - A retired colonel is inspiring his own son to serve in the military after serving in the U.S. Army for 22 years.
Philip Hoyle played a crucial role in operations like Desert Shield and Desert Storm, earning numerous accolades.
Hoyle's life has always been centered around service to his country.
"My dad: retired Army, myself: retired Army Colonel," said Hoyle. "I have one son who's on active duty now in Germany."
He joined the Army after graduating from Georgia Southern University.

"The biggest thing for me and probably for my dad as well, was the call to serve others, to serve your country," said Hoyle. "You know, it's God, family, country."
Colonel Hoyle initially planned to serve for four years but ended up dedicating 22 years to the military.
"It was a lot of fun," said Hoyle. "We just did a lot of exciting things. We had a lot of good training. There were some hard times as well, but for the most part, it was an enjoyable experience for me."
He served during Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and the liberation of Kuwait.
"We were called in to go free Kuwait. That was the liberation of Kuwait, Desert Shield, Desert Storm. So very active in that. That was my real combat tour in the 1990s," Hoyle explained.
He received the Bronze Star for his service in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, along with the Meritorious Service Medal and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
He is also one of the few Army soldiers to have a Naval Unit Commendation Award.
"We were the only Army unit with the Marines, so that Marine unit was awarded the Naval Unit Commendation, and because we were part of that unit, we also were awarded that Naval Unit Commendation," Hoyle added.
The award did cause some confusion.
"So every time I'd have that on my dress uniform, the old sergeants and sergeants majors would come up to me and say, 'Hey sir, you're missing something on that," said Hoyle. "And I'm like, 'No, no. That's the Navy.'"

Big picture view
Although he enjoyed his time in the military, there was one thing he wished he could change.
"My only regret was being away from family at the time, but for the most part, I was very blessed.
Every unit I ended up in turned out to be a very high-performing unit. We were always very successful," Hoyle said. He hopes more young people will embrace serving in the military. "We still need people to raise their right hand and swear an oath to the Constitution of the United States and defend our country against all enemies," Hoyle said.
It's a commitment he says he will always uphold.

TAMPA, Fla. - A new report from the Ocean Conservancy is giving the United States a failing grade when it comes to fighting plastic pollution. The environmental non-profit gave the Sunshine State a 1.5 out of 5 stars for its current efforts, saying there's significant room for improvement. The release coincides with Plastic Free July, a global campaign urging individuals and governments to cut down on single-use plastics. READ: EPA's research and development office eliminated; thousands laid off What they're saying "Four out of five Americans want to see plastics addressed," said JP Brooker, the director of the Florida Conservation Program at Ocean Conservancy. "And yet, we're only giving states an average score of 1.5 out of 5 stars." Florida earned some points in the report for steps like banning intentional balloon releases and allowing communities to ban smoking on beaches, which helps reduce litter. But, Brooker said the state still has a major roadblock: It prevents local governments from banning single-use plastic items like bags and utensils. Dig deeper Brooker said plastic pollution isn't just an environmental issue, it's also a threat to Florida's economy. Big picture view Florida isn't alone in its low score. The Ocean Conservancy's report found that about 90% of states failed to meet basic standards for plastic waste reduction. "The U.S. is the world's number one generator of plastic waste," Brooker said. "We need to embrace a circular economy, where plastics are reused and recycled, not just thrown away." Currently, the UN is working on global trade to reduce plastic pollution. "The problem is even worse now," said Dr. David Berger, a Tampa-based pediatrician. "It's already in our water supply. It's in our food. Even if people start avoiding plastics today, it's still everywhere." The Ocean Conservancy's report compiled the top ten items collected on Florida beaches. The top three items were the following: Cigarettes Butts Plastic bottle caps Food wrappers Plastics straws came in at No. 7. Despite awareness campaigns, cigarette butts have remained the number one item for years, highlighting the ongoing challenge of changing public habits. A pilot made sharp turn to avoid a B-52 bomber over North Dakota

That collision and subsequent close calls with Army helicopters over the nation's capital put the spotlight on the interaction between military and civilian flights. Officials have focused on improving communications between the two and making sure that air traffic controllers know where military aircraft are at all times because the Army helicopters around Washington were flying with a key locating device turned off. Advertisement SkyWest, a regional carrier for Delta and other large airlines, said the Friday flight had departed from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and landed safely in Minot after performing a 'go-around' maneuver when another aircraft became visible in the SkyWest plane's flight path. Minot is 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Bismarck, North Dakota's capital city, and about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the Canadian border. Minot Air Force Base is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Minot, North Dakota's fourth-largest city. The base is home to 26 B-52 bombers, intercontinental ballistic missile operations, and more than 5,400 military personnel. In the video, the pilot noted that Minot's small airport does not operate radar and directs flights visually. When the airport tower instructed the SkyWest flight to make a right turn upon approach, the pilot said he looked in that direction and saw the bomber in his flight path. He informed the tower and made a hard turn to avoid the bomber, he said. 'I don't know how fast they were going, but they were a lot faster than us,' the pilot said of the bomber. Passengers can be heard applauding as the pilot wrapped up his explanation. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a statement Monday morning simply saying it's investigating the incident. By midafternoon, it had issued a second statement to note that air traffic services were provided by a private company that services the Minot air traffic control tower. 'These controllers are not FAA employees,' the agency said. Some small airports like Minot's don't have their radar systems on site. The vast majority of the nation's airports don't even have towers. But regional FAA radar facilities do oversee traffic all across the country and help direct planes in and out of airports like Minot. The Minot airport typically handles between 18 and 24 flights a day. Advertisement The pilot's frustration is evident in the video. 'The Air Force base does have radar, and nobody said, 'Hey, there's a B-52 in the pattern,'' the pilot told passengers. SkyWest said it is also investigating.
