USD-based FDs with higher returns, shorter tenures, no Rupee depreciation risks, doorstep KYC, 100% repatriation and no tax on the returns.
Belong also launches a transparent and seamless Indian tax filing service for NRIs.
Dubai, UAE; Wednesday, 16 July 2025: Belong, a new fintech platform for global Indians to invest safely and easily in India, is now available for non-resident Indians (NRI) in the UAE. Licensed by IFSCA – regulator of GIFT City, India, Belong offers a US Dollar-based Fixed Deposit (FD) starting at just USD 5,000 (AED 18,365), with high returns.
Ankur Choudhary, CEO and Co-Founder, Belong, said: ' Our vision is simple: to make it easier for Indians to thrive globally while staying connected to Ind ia. Every NRI has built a global identity through hard work and ambition, but financial and non-financial services in India haven't kept up. At Belong , with GIFT City FDs, NRIs get more flexibility in choosing shorter tenures and they are also protected against Rupee depreciation while enjoying tax free returns in dollars .'
Belong users in the UAE do not need to route funds through their NRE or NRO accounts, and the earnings are fully repatriable to UAE with minimal paperwork. As these FDs are in USD, investors are also protected from INR value fluctuations against the US Dollar. GIFT City is not under Indian tax jurisdiction, and all earnings on Belong are fully tax-free in India. The deposits also offer flexible lock-in periods of 3-months and 6-months, compared to a minimum 1-year lock-in for FCNR deposits.
' NRIs experience challenges when investing in India, such as complex and in-country KYC, high currency conversion charges, taxation on all Indian earnings, difficulty in repatriation of funds, and more. Belong set out to tackle these on behalf of NRIs, and GIFT City regulations work perfectly for the NRIs who still want to contribute and benefit from the India growth story ', added Choudhary.
Belong is offering these FDs in partnership with reputed Indian banks located in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India's up-and-coming global financial services hub, similar to Singapore. Offered to NRIs mostly via Indian banks until now, FDs have long been a popular investment option in India. The Reserve Bank of India has recorded INR 103 trillion (approximately US$ 1.2 trillion) held in FDs as of 2024.
While Belong offers USD Fixed Deposits at launch, the platform will soon add other financial products such as mutual funds, stocks, insurance, cards and more, which will offer NRIs more rewarding investment and transaction options in India. Alongside the USD-based FD service, Belong has also launched a dedicated India tax filing service for NRIs without the typical 'NRI markup' pricing. NRIs are usually charged higher, non-standardised rates for most services in India. Belong aims to change that by offering transparent and cost-effective NRI taxation services
'NRIs have long been underserved when it comes to modern, digital-first financial solutions tailored to their unique needs,' said Vaas Bhaskar, Partner, Elevation Capital. 'Belong is uniquely positioned to serve this massive, underserved market by combining deep fintech expertise with GIFT City's regulatory framework. We're excited to back this exceptional team as they scale across key markets and build the go-to platform for everything India that global Indians need.'
Belong aims to become the financial and lifestyle bridge for global Indians – helping NRIs stay connected, invested, and rooted in India, no matter where life takes them. Belong already has a suite of NRI-specific digital tools to help NRIs make informed financial decisions.

China Begins Construction on World's Largest Hydropower Dam

Israa Farhan China has officially begun construction on what is set to become the world's largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Premier Li Qiang announced a high-profile ceremony on Saturday, as reported by Chinese state media. The multi-billion-dollar project, estimated at $170 billion, will feature five cascading hydropower stations capable of generating 300 billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually. This output is comparable to the total electricity consumed by the UK in a single year. China has positioned the project as part of its efforts to expand renewable energy, lower carbon emissions, and stimulate economic growth in Tibet. Electricity generated by the dam will be distributed to other regions while also meeting the energy needs of local Tibetan communities, according to official statements. The Yarlung Tsangpo, a 2,900-kilometre river that originates in the Himalayas, descends dramatically through what is considered the world's deepest land-based canyon. As it flows into India and Bangladesh, the river becomes the Brahmaputra, a crucial water source for millions of people across the two countries. The project has sparked serious concerns among Indian and Bangladeshi authorities, as well as environmental NGOs. Critics argue the dam could pose severe risks to the region's ecological balance and the livelihoods of those dependent on the river downstream. India's Foreign Ministry has publicly voiced its apprehension, stating it will monitor developments closely and take necessary steps to safeguard national interests. New Delhi has also urged Beijing to ensure that downstream nations are not adversely affected by upstream activities. Environmental organizations have warned of the irreversible damage that could be caused to the fragile Tibetan Plateau, which is already under pressure from climate change. NGOs have also raised concerns about the lack of transparency regarding how many communities may be displaced due to the project. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

MENA Banks Can Bridge the SME Finance Gap Through Simplified, AI-Driven Servicing - Middle East Business News and Information

Finastra urges modernization to unlock growth and profitability in SME lending Small and medium-sized enterprises SMEs play a central role in MENA economies, yet many remain underserved by formal financial systems. According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), 40% of formal micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in developing countries face unmet financing needs amounting to $5.2 trillion annually . This is equivalent to 1.4 times the current level of global MSME lending. In the MENA region, the finance gap is particularly high, at 88% of potential demand. 'Banks often face structural challenges in addressing this gap,' said Carlos Teixeira, Head Business Dev and Strategy, Lending at Finastra . 'Legacy infrastructure, high servicing costs, increased credit risk, and fragmented data make it difficult to assess SME creditworthiness and process loans efficiently. As a result, many SMEs rely on internal funds or informal sources to finance growth and operations.' According to Finastra's 2024 Financial Services State of the Nation Survey , 87% of financial institutions globally see improving access to finance as part of their responsibility. The report highlights growing adoption of cloud-native platforms, API-based architectures, and AI. Financial institutions in countries like UAE and Saudi Arabia are already taking steps to modernize their banking capabilities, which can help enable faster and more scalable lending, including to SMEs. 'Adopting a simplified servicing approach in lending is becoming a strategic priority for banks to better serve SMEs,' added Carlos Teixeira . 'By automating workflows, applying data analytics, breaking down silos and integrating digital channels, banks can reduce costs, improve credit assessments and processing times, reduce risk and deliver more tailored, responsive support.' 'Simplified and scalable servicing models also present a commercial opportunity. Banks can serve more SMEs profitably, compete more effectively with fintechs and private credit providers, and unlock new revenue streams. At the same time, expanding access to credit allows banks to contribute meaningfully to closing the finance gap and supporting economic resilience across the region,' highlighted Carlos Teixeira. To extend their reach and improve efficiency, banks in the region are also partnering with fintechs and third-party providers via digital ecosystems. These collaborations can, for example, improve risk modelling, access to alternative data sets, and processes for credit assessments. This, in turn, allows financial institutions to expand access to credit while maintaining prudent risk controls. In 2024, SME credit in Saudi Arabia rose by 27.6% to USD 94 billion . In the UAE, SME lending reached USD 22.1 billion by mid-year. These developments reflect broader efforts to close the financing gap through technology-enabled servicing models. Finastra continues to support financial institutions across MENA with modernizing their SME lending capabilities, while helping to expand financial inclusion.

Egyptian Reconstruction Projects in Libya Surpass USD 5 Billion

Egypt has also solidified its position as Libya's top African trading partner, with exports exceeding USD 2 billion, surpassing Libyan investments in Egypt for the first time. Jul 21, 2025 Egyptian companies have implemented reconstruction projects in Libya worth over USD 5 billion, marking a major milestone in bilateral economic cooperation. For the first time, the scale of Egyptian-led projects has exceeded the total value of Libyan investments in Egypt. The latest agreements, signed this month with Libya's Fund for Development and Reconstruction, include development works in cities such as Derna and Al-Bayda, which were among the hardest hit by Cyclone Daniel in September 2023. Egypt has also solidified its position as Libya's top African trading partner, with exports exceeding USD 2 billion. This places Egypt third among Arab exporters to Libya, behind Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Meanwhile, Libyan investment in Egypt has dropped by 25%, with 511 Libyan companies currently registered. Although these firms have declared capital totalling USD 4 billion, the actual volume of investment is estimated at USD 2.4 billion.
