Eight restored George Town buildings to open for public tours during July heritage celebrations
There will also be community volunteers to guide visitors during these open house sessions to explain the various aspects of the buildings and their history.
George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) general manager Ang Ming Chee said the eight buildings were recently restored using funds from the repair incentive grant from the federal government.
'A lot of heritage buildings benefited from this grant so this open house is a pilot programme to open the doors of these heritage buildings for the public to experience the restored buildings,' she told reporters during a press conference with tourism and creative economy state exco Wong Hon Wai to announce the George Town Heritage Celebrations on July 5 to 7.
She said they hoped to come up with a more sustainable way of getting income to support the local communities and the restoration of heritage buildings in the city.
'We hope that the public will visit these open houses and give us their feedback,' she said.
The eight heritage buildings that will open its doors to visitors during that long weekend next month are GTWHI building at Lebuh Acheh, Kwangtung and Tengchow Association, Makam Dato Koyah, Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh, Nam Hooi Wooi Koon, St. George's Church, Sun Wui Wui Koon and Thai Pak Koong (Ng Suk) Temple.
Meanwhile, the three-day celebrations will also feature 23 cultural workshops, six interactive performances and a George Town Heritage 5km Walk for families.
The workshops will offer immersive and hands-on experience in traditional crafts, food preparation and languages.
Wong said this year marked the 17th year since the joint inscription of George Town and Melaka as Unesco world heritage sites.
He said the heritage celebrations is now shifting towards storytelling as a key focus this year to nurture more community narratives.
'It's not just about preserving walls; it's about letting those walls speak,' he said.
He reiterated the state government's commitment to push cultural tourism as a pillar of Penang's creative economy.

'Bit by bit, areas surrounding JS-SEZ are beginning to experience the spillover effects of development. For example, the areas of Simpang Renggam and Renggam in Kluang are already seeing its impact. This progress will gradually expand to other districts. 'If Seremban is known as a satellite city to the Klang Valley, we expect Kluang to become one of the main satellite cities as a result of the JS–SEZ development,' he said at the launch of the Majestic Johor x Renggam Fiesta at Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre (TMIYC) Renggam today. The JS-SEZ covers major development zones such as Iskandar Malaysia, Forest City, the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, and Desaru, with a total land area of approximately 357,128 hectares. The Iskandar Malaysia region also includes strategic areas such as Johor Bahru City Centre, Iskandar Puteri, Tanjung Pelepas — Tanjung Bin, Pasir Gudang, Senai — Skudai, and Sedenak. Further commenting, Onn Hafiz said that rapid development in the transport sector would also support connections between districts and the JS-SEZ, including the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Project and the Gemas-Johor Bahru Double Track Electrified Project. Three-day George Town Heritage Celebrations kick off with cultural workshop
GEORGE TOWN: The three-day George Town Heritage Celebrations (GTHC) 2025 in Penang kicked off with a cultural workshop on Saturday (July 5) evening. Held at Armenian Park, Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple, Seh Tek Tong Cheah Kongsi and along surrounding streets, it attracted a crowd of thousands. Featuring some two-dozen interactive activities, the workshop allowed locals and tourists alike to experience and learn about traditional art forms, games, handicraft, rituals, cuisines, dialects and more. There was also an interactive stage where various communities put on inviting dances that convinced many spectators to get up and join in the fun. 3 highways, 15 main roads to close for Asean meet in KL

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Three highways and 15 main roads in the Klang Valley will be closed in stages for the Asean foreign ministers' meeting, to be held on July 8-11 in Kuala Lumpur city centre. Federal traffic police said the roads affected are mainly those from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur, and city roads leading to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and to the hotels where the delegations will stay. A dry run will be held from today to Sunday, while the actual closures will take place on July 8-12. The three affected highways are the Maju expressway, KLIA-Putrajaya on the central link of the North-South expressway (Elite highway), and Sungai Besi-KL on the KL-Seremban highway.
