Joy Reid claims MSNBC fired her without warning, speculates her coverage of Trump, Gaza led to ouster
Ex-MSNBC host Joy Reid speculated Tuesday that her coverage of President Donald Trump and the ongoing war in Gaza were unstated factors that led to her sudden ouster from the liberal network.
During her appearance on 'The Breakfast Club,' Reid was asked what was behind her firing from MSNBC in February, insisting it wasn't a ratings issue despite the fact that the network's viewership took a huge dive after the 2024 election.
'And we had actually just had a ratings meeting, like, two weeks before I was fired, where they were like, 'You guys are actually losing – you guys lost less than, you know, your competitors, and you're actually doing fine,'' Reid said.
'So ratings were fine. We were doing fine. And you know, the ratings have not gotten better since I left.'
Reid then pointed to a report about her being on the chopping block that surfaced the Friday before she was fired, which she at first thought was just a 'rumor,' but her producers began 'freaking out' over what was alleged.
'We hadn't heard anything,' Reid said.
'Nobody had called me. Nobody had said, 'You did something wrong, you're in trouble, you're on probation.' I had gotten nothing. Then I get a text message early the next morning saying, 'Can you talk at noon?' And I was fired immediately. There was no warning. And I asked, 'Well, what, you know, what's the [issue]?' Nothing. They were just like, 'Oh, we just want to make some changes.' They never said why. So I've had to live in the rumor mill with everybody else.'

The former 'ReidOut' host went on to claim there were 'two topics' that had made MSNBC management 'uncomfortable.'
'One of them is Trump, because Trump is suing everybody,' Reid said.
'I mean, he's literally threatening people to the point where '60 Minutes' is shook, where ABC News is shook. You know, he's verbally threatened Comcast by name, named [Comcast CEO] Brian Roberts by name, and all of these are businesses that want to do business that need the FCC approval. They actually have to have the federal government's approval to do mergers, acquisitions… He can pull your license… so it's like everybody is trying to navigate this really deranged man. So I think they're activating out of a sense of 'we don't want to poke the bear too much.''
Reid made an appearance on 'The Breakfast Club,' and claims ratings were not a factor in her show being cancelled.

'I think the other piece is Gaza,' she continued.
'And you just can't get away from the fact that talking about Gaza in a way that humanizes Palestinians is not the usual way that cable news operates, or that any news in this country operates for whatever reason, that topic makes people uncomfortable.'
MSNBC did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
Reid remained defiant following her ousting, saying at the time that she would not apologize for going 'hard' on issues like Black Lives Matter, illegal immigrants, the 1619 Project and Gaza, as well as her opposition to Trump.
'I am not sorry I stood up for those things because those things are of God,' Reid said in February.
'And you know, I'm a church girl, too, and those are the things that I was taught were of God. So I'm not sorry. I'm just proud of my show.'

President Donald Trump appeared to suggest that billions of dollars of U.S. aid to Israel could be at stake if prosecutors do not drop corruption charges against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump lashed out at Israeli prosecutors in a Truth Social post Saturday evening and said it was 'terrible' what was happening to 'war hero' Netanyahu, who faces charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He denies all of the allegations. While the president did not directly threaten prosecutors, he highlighted that the United States has sent billions of dollars to Israel and said the nation was 'not going to stand' for it. 'It is INSANITY doing what the out-of-control prosecutors are doing to Bibi Netanyahu,' Trump said. 'The United States of America spends Billions of Dollar a year, far more than on any other Nation, protecting and supporting Israel. We are not going to stand for this.' He called Netanyahu's prosecution a 'POLITICAL WITCH HUNT' and compared the case to the 'very similar to the Witch Hunt that I was forced to endure' following the president's multiple indictments on conspiracy and fraud charges. Israel is the largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid, having received hundreds of billions of dollars in military and economic support over the last several decades, including billions in additional support for Israel during its war in Gaza. The president said on Saturday that Netanyahu was 'right now in the process of negotiating a Deal with Hamas,' but did not specify further details. Trump told reporters on Friday that he believed a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was close. Trump's intervention, the second in days, comes as Netanyahu's cross-examination, which began on June 4, is set to resume Monday. Netanyahu was indicted in 2019. He pleaded not guilty after the trial, involving three criminal cases, began in 2020. In the first case, Netanyahu is alleged to have committed fraud and breach of trust over claims he and his wife Sara received expensive gifts illicitly from a Hollywood media mogul, according to The Times of Israel. Trump vowed to 'save' the Israeli leader earlier this week. 'Bibi Netanyahu's trial should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State,' Trump said in a post on Truth Social. 'It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu,' he added. The Trump administration has been working on a deal after Israel shattered a two-month truce with Hamas by launching strikes in April. Interest in resolving the crisis picked up steam this month after Israel's bombing campaign in Iran and Trump's decision to bomb several Iranian nuclear facilities. A ceasefire to the 12-day Israel-Iran conflict went into effect early this week.

Laurence O'Donnell has opened fire on White House Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of the uttering the 'stupidest public lie ever told.' On his MSNBC show The Last Word, O'Donnell took the former Fox News host's Thursday press conference appearance apart, including bringing up claims of Hegseth's previous issues with alcohol. 'Pete Hegseth was reported to have had such a severe drinking problem while working as a weekend morning host at Fox that he promised Republican senators that he would not drink if they voted to confirm him as secretary of defense,' O'Donnell said. 'And so we're just going to have to assume that Pete Hegseth was stone cold sober today when he said something that sounds like it belongs in the great Comedy Central TV series Drunk History." As part of The Last Word, O'Donnell aired Hegseth telling a press conference on Thursday that, 'President Trump directed the most complex and secretive military operation in history', in reference to the U.S. strikes on Iran's nuclear base. 'It's that kind of thing that wouldn't be surprising for him to say if he still had his job at Fox and was drunk at a hotel bar,' O'Donnell claimed. The host claimed it was, 'The stupidest public lie ever told by a secretary of defense.' O'Donnell continued, 'Now, some secretaries of defense, particularly during the Vietnam War, found themselves telling worse lies, more important lies about their plans to win the war that we lost, decisively, but those secretaries weren't telling lies that were provably false in the moment that they said them. 'A presumably sober Pete Hegseth actually said Donald Trump directed the most complex and secretive military operation in history. Donald Trump directed nothing. Donald Trump said 'Go!' to a plan that has been in place for many, many years.' He added, 'Pete Hegseth promised Republican senators that he would not drink if he became secretary of defense, but he did not promise that he wouldn't sound drunk.' Hegseth denied a New Yorker story last year that included claims of drinking at work, with a statement from the Trump administration reading, 'These disgusting allegations are completely unfounded and false, and anyone peddling these defamatory lies to score political cheap shots is sickening.' Hegseth has been approached by the Daily Beast for comment.
