"Magic: The Gathering" Movie and TV Universe in Development from Legendary, Hasbro
The toy maker and the Hollywood mini-major behind the 'Godzilla' and 'Dune' franchises will create 'a live-action feature film and television universe' based on the fantasy series, with an inaugural feature film first on deck.
Hasbro estimates the strategy tournament represents a $1 billion piece of intellectual property, thanks to over 50 million players engaging with its fantastic worlds.
Legendary has a proven track record in this space. Including its work with the so-called 'monsterverse' of Godzilla and King Kong, the company has also launched content around Pokémon ('Detective Pikachu'), Minecraft and the 'Enola Holmes' franchise.
The studio's upcoming projects include an anticipated take on the world of classic video game 'Street Fighter' and a live action-animation hybrid film 'Animal Friends' starring Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy.
At Hasbro, development properties include the Sony TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Television adaptations of the iconic board game 'Clue'; a film based on Monopoly from Margot Robbie's LuckyChap and a 'Magic: The Gathering' animated series already in the works at Netflix.

Legendary Is Mulling Acquisition of Lionsgate
Yara Sameh Legendary Entertainment is eyeing a deal to acquire Lionsgate Studios, following the latter company's recent separation from Starz. If a deal is reached, it would bring together Legendary, which is behind the Dune movie franchise and a 'monster-verse' collection that includes several Godzilla movies, with Lionsgate, whose film franchises include John Wick and the Hunger Games. Legendary first reached out about a potential partnership with Lionsgate Studios following the split-off of Starz in May. Lionsgate Studios formally separated from the Starz business effective May 7. The company comprising its TV and film production and distribution divisions and a content library with 20,000-plus titles, merged last year with Screaming Eagle Acquisition Corp., a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) and became a separately traded entity (with 87.3% of the total shares of Lionsgate Studios held by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.). Meanwhile, Legendary last year bought out the stake Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group owned in the company. The pact left Legendary and private-equity firm Apollo Global Management, which acquired a stake in Legendary in 2022 for $760 million, in control of the company. Among the Legendary Pictures' slate was this year's blockbuster 'A Minecraft Movie,' as well as films including 'The Hangover,' 'The Dark Knight' and 'Enola Holmes.' In aggregate, Legendary Pictures-associated productions have grossed more than $20 billion worldwide at the box office, according to the company. "Dune 3" Gets Title, Will Be Shot in Imax
Yara Sameh Denis Villeneuve's upcoming return to Arrakis is titled 'Dune: Part Three.' Reports had called the threequel 'Dune Messiah,' a nod to the 1969 book from Frank Herbert that the entry will adapt as its storyline, following Paul 'Muad'Dib' Atreides as he takes over as emperor. On Rentrak, the film is listed as 'Dune: Part Three.' The installment will also include sequences shot with Imax cameras. However, 'Dune: Part Three' will not be entirely shot with Imax cameras, following in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' which is the first and so far only film to be produced that way. In an interview on CNBC, Imax CEO Richard Gelfond seemed to suggest that the next 'Dune' would be filmed entirely with the company's proprietary cameras, but it appears he misspoke. At the end of the interview, Gelfond was asked about Villeneuve being hired by Amazon MGM Studios to direct their reboot of the James Bond franchise. The exec's response also touched on the director's plans for 'Dune: Part Three' at Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, which will film before the 007 revival. 'From a personal point of view, I was really happy. I like him. I think he's a genius filmmaker,' Gelfond said about the Bond hiring. 'He's so creative. He's making the next 'Dune' — with Imax cameras, he's filming the whole thing. So we haven't started talking yet, but I'm praying that that's the case with Bond.' Gelfond also touted Imax's success through the year's summer blockbuster season, citing that 'F1' earned 23% of its opening weekend grosses in Imax auditoriums. Meanwhile, 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning' did 20% in Imax its first two weeks. 'Think of 20% of the box office, when we're less than 1% of the screens. The public is really demanding it,' Gelfond added. Production on 'Dune: Part Three' is set to begin imminently, with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya reprising their roles. Jason Momoa has also confirmed he will return for 'Part Three,' after featuring in the first 'Dune' but not appearing in 'Part Two.' Last year, Villeneuve spoke about the film and said the next 'Dune' installment 'will not be the completion of a trilogy' in his eyes. 'First, it's important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,' Villeneuve said of the first two 'Dune' movies. 'It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That's done and that's finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it's not like a trilogy. It's strange to say that, but if I go back there, it's to do something that feels different and has its own identity.' In a recent Variety interview, Bruce Markoe, senior vice president and head of post-production at Imax, explained what a movie being 'shot with Imax' means for audiences and filmmakers. 'Those movies that were shot with our film cameras receive that kind of nomenclature. Those are different than the 'Filmed for Imax' movies, which are all shot with digital cameras. However, a lot of the same kind of process takes place in the making of the movie when they're shooting with our film cameras,' Markoe said. 'Those movies still do a lot of testing and reviews, and filmmakers work very closely with us throughout the entire production, since it's our camera on set, whereas the 'Filmed for Imax' program is using certified digital cameras that are not necessarily unique to us.' Dave Bautista to Star in Rom-Com "The Romantic" for Paramount
Yara Sameh Paramount Pictures has acquired rights to "The Romantic", a romantic comedy spec from Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, with Dave Bautista attached to star. "The Romantic" is centered around bestselling romance author Francine London, who has a secret: she's a six-foot-four mountain of a man named Ed Schwenke. When Ed's identity comes under scrutiny, he hires a wildcard of a woman to pose as Francine at a romance fiction convention, while evading a cynical female journalist, who hates romance even more than she hates liars. Maximum Effort will produce under its first-look deal with the studio, alongside Bautista's Dogbone Entertainment. No director is attached at present. Bautista has spoken for years about his desire to star in a rom-com. In a 2023 interview with Page Six , he said, 'I know I'm not your typical rom-com lead. I'm a little rough around the edges. But I always, you know, I look in the mirror and I say, I ask myself, 'Am I that unattractive? Is there something that unappealing about me that excludes me from these parts?''. The Dune and Guardians of the Galaxy star added that while he's 'never had an offer to do a rom-com,' he had 'high hopes' about checking this off his bucket list and would 'keep searching' until he found the right opportunity. Currently weighing an offer for a role in "Road House 2" at Amazon MGM, Bautista will next be seen starring in the Aura Entertainment actioner "Trap House", as well as the Amazon MGM buddy cop action comedy "The Wrecking Crew" opposite Jason Momoa, both of which are produced by his Dogbone Entertainment Banner.
