Explosion at a California fireworks warehouse sets off fires and forces evacuations
People were urged to avoid the area of Esparto and Madison for several days following the Tuesday night explosion, which set off multiple fireworks and caused a large fire that led to other spot fires and collapsed the building.
'The fire will take time to cool, and once it does, explosive experts must safely enter the site to assess and secure the area,' the Yolo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
The cause of the explosion was under investigation, the office said.
The fire had reached 78 acres (32 hectares) as of Tuesday night, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.
Esparto is in a rural area about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento.
'We do believe this location is owned by an active pyrotechnic license holder,' Deputy State Fire Marshal Kara Garrett told KXTV. She added: 'This type of incident is very rare, as facilities like this are required to not only follow our stringent California pyrotechnic requirements, but also federal explosive storage requirements.'

The Yolo County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post late on Tuesday, "As many of you are aware, there was a significant explosion earlier today near the Esparto/Madison area, specifically around County Road 23 and County Road 86A. A warehouse storing fireworks exploded and continues to burn." Video footage shared by NBC News showed the moment the warehouse burst into flames, before the blaze triggered a huge fireball. The outlet identified the fireworks company as Devastating Pyrotechnics. The company said in a statement on its website, "Our hearts and thoughts are with those we lost, their families, and everyone impacted in our community. We are grateful for the swift response of law enforcement and emergency personnel. Our focus will remain on those directly impacted by this tragedy, and we will cooperate fully with the proper authorities in their investigation." In a separate Yolo County news release shared on Wednesday, Yolo County Board of Supervisors Angel Barajas, District 5, extended officials' "deepest concern to those impacted and our thoughts remain especially with the families of the seven individuals still unaccounted for." "This is a tragic and evolving situation, and we want to express our profound gratitude to the first responders, fire personnel, law enforcement agencies, and supporting partners from across the region who worked through the night to contain the fire, secure the scene, and protect residents,' Barajas said, per the post. The release stated that county authorities' focus was now "on supporting the ongoing response including search efforts and the active investigation being led by Cal Fire – Office of State Fire Marshal. We are committed to working closely with all involved agencies to ensure the investigation is thorough, transparent, and maintains its integrity." DHS investigating video allegedly showing immigration agents urinating in high school parking lot
The Department of Homeland Security said it's investigating security camera video that allegedly shows immigration agents urinating in a Pico Rivera high school's parking lot. The El Rancho School Unified District released the security video from Ruben Salazar High School on Wednesday. School board president John Contreras said it happened in the morning on June 17 when school was not in session. "ERUSD surveillance footage captured approximately 10 ICE agents urinating near storage containers on the Salazar campus parking lot," Contreras said. While the campus was empty, Superintendent Marco Villegas said the incident happened near a city park and an elementary school, which was hosting summer classes. Villegas said he is not sure if the federal agents were in plain view of the students. The school district stated that Homeland Security did not obtain permission before entering the campus and did not provide a reason for its agents' presence in the high school parking lot. "Not only did ICE agents unlawfully trespass ERUSD school grounds, but they did not exercise sound and respectful judgment," Contreras said. Criminal defense attorney Neama Rahmani said urinating in public is typically a misdemeanor offense. "Any normal person or civilian who was urinating on school property could be charged with trespassing," Rahmani said. "They could be charged with indecent exposure. They're misdemeanors. Obviously, subsequent offenses may actually be felonies." Immigration agents have conducted multiple operations in Pico Rivera and throughout Los Angeles County over the past month.

Bus crashes onto railroad tracks in L.A. area, overturns, injuring dozens
A bus veered from an L.A. County highway onto railroad tracks and overturned Wednesday morning, injuring dozens of passengers, the California Highway Patrol said. Officers form the CHP Antelope Valley unit responded to the scene. "Preliminary investigation suggests that the bus ... for reasons still under investigation ... veered to the right" and off the highway, onto the tracks. Then the bus overturned and "came to a stop on its side," the CHP said. It cited American Medical Response (AMR) personnel as saying some 20-40 passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to major. It wasn't known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, the CHP added.
