That's exactly what happened to me, when I discovered that my phone number had been "spoofed" and crooks were using it to try and scam people.
It's a horrible form of identity fraud and a cunning way for fraudsters to attempt to steal cash or money from unsuspecting victims, as the number appears to be from a trusted source.
It all started six months ago, when I started getting mysterious phone calls from strangers claiming that they'd has missed calls from me.
But when I checked my call log each time, I could see that I never made the call to that number.
I would tell the caller that they made a mistake, and hang up the phone.
I was suspicious that these were scammers trying to lure me into handing over money in some way, so I made sure to block the numbers after I put the phone down.
But the calls kept coming and each time I kept blocking the number.
That was until last week, when I received a WhatsApp out of the blue from a lady I didn't know.
"Hello, did you call me?" the text read.
I usually don't message back when I get these sorts of WhatsApp messages, as I'm wary of scammers.
But I was confused when the lady sent a screenshot of her call log - and surprisingly, my phone number was at the top of the list.
I decided to message back, explaining that I didn't call her.
I thanked her for flagging the missed call, and said I would look into what happened.
After contacting my phone company, ID Mobile, I was told that the most likely explanation for what had happened was that my phone number had been spoofed.
They said there wasn't much the company could do about my spoofed number, although I had the option to change my phone number, which would cost £25.
I was also told to report the issue to Action Fraud.
The thought of a scammer using my number and pretending to be me to con money out of innocent people made me sick to my stomach.
So I decided to bite the bullet, swallow the £25 charge, and put the experience behind me.
Even better, I've not had a single scam call or text since I switched my number - before, I used to get at least one a week.
However, there's nothing to stop my new number from being spoofed too.
It's also been a massive inconvenience contacting all my friends, family, and organisations to let them know about my change of number.
iD Mobile said: "We understand how frustrating it is for customers to receive calls from people claiming they've been contacted by them.
"In this instance, it appears the number was spoofed — a common industry issue where fraudsters fake caller IDs without needing access to the number itself."
I've been told that if I report it to Action Fraud, the £25 fee will be waived - which I'm planning on doing soon.
Spoofing on the rise
The main reason why scammers will spoof numbers is in order to target more victims without being caught up in something called the Do Not Originate (DNO) list.
Ofcom and UK Finance launched the DNO list in 2019.
Companies and organisations add to the list when a rogue number is reported, and this list is shared with telecoms providers to help them identify and block calls from these numbers.
It's an effective tool in filtering through scam callers - but tech and cyber security expert David McClelland said scammers are exploiting a loophole.
"Perhaps because of this DNO list - although it's difficult to say for sure - scammers are now also making calls that spoof individuals' mobile numbers," he said.
Spoofing is becoming a big problem.
The telcoms regulator, Ofcom, is so concerned about the growing threat of spoofing that it launched a consultation in July last year on how to address the issue.
It said it was "concerned" that scam calls are coming from scammers who are spoofing UK mobile numbers.
It said a call from a spoofed number could appear more trustworthy, and "victims are more likely to share personal information or to make a payment, which can lead to significant financial and emotional harm".
It can therefore make it much easier for fraudsters to hunt down victims and steal their money.
Some 5.7million Brits have been targeted by a mobile phone scammer more than 10 times, according to research from comparison site Uswitch.
And an eye-watering £1.17billion was swiped by scammers in 2024 - roughly level to what was stolen in 2023.
What can you do about spoofing?
Worryingly, phone companies can't do a lot about spoofing, says Jake Moore from the cybersecurity firm ESET.
"There's no solid bulletproof way to stop this sort of spoofing," he says.
"However, it's a good idea to report it to Action Fraud and at extreme lengths, you can change your number.
"This may be challenging for some people - but it will eradicate the problem if your phone number appears on a list that hackers delve into."
My spoofing experience has been sobering, and has reminded me of the importance of remaining vigilant against scammers.
Set your privacy settings to the highest level on your social media and messaging accounts.
This is so people can't contact you or collect personal information about you - it's surprising how much we share on our accounts.
Be wary of who you share your number with.
"Try to reduce the amount of companies you give your phone number to," Jake said.
"Most website forms will ask for it but not all of them will require it for the service or product to work.
"By limiting where your number is divulged, it reduces the chance it will be breached."
If you get a cold call, never rely on just using the caller ID as a way to verify who they say they are.
It's worryingly easy for scammers to spoof a number.
If someone says they are from your bank, then hang up and call the number on the back of your card, or through the mobile bank app.
If someone says they are from an official organisation, like HMRC, hang up and look up the number to call back on the gov.uk website.
Being spoofed has made me realise the lengths that scammers will go to in order to trick you into handing over money.
From now on, I'll be keeping a close eye on where I'm sharing my phone number.

Mum on run from religious drug cult in US wins battle to keep kids in Scotland
A mother who fled to Scotland from America to escape a religious drugs cult has won a court custody battle over her two children. A mum has won a legal battle in Scotland's highest court to protect her two young children from a religious drug cult. The unnamed woman fled to Scotland from the USA with them 20 months ago to escape the Santo Daime movement of which she was once a member. Her former husband launched a legal action at the Court of Session in Edinburgh last month (July) accusing his wife of abducting their children. However one of Scotland's most senior judges Lady Tait this week ruled that the youngsters - aged nine and seven - should remain in Scotland. The father, who was also unnamed, sought the return of his children on the basis that they had been unlawfully removed from the USA. The court was told that the couple married in 2016 and divorced seven years later. They met through a religious movement named Santo Daime, described in court as a religious drug cult involving the use of the psychoactive drug Ayahuasca. The mother claimed she was told to give her baby the substance before she started breast feeding. She left the cult in August 2020 and underwent therapy to recover. The children were then brought to Scotland. Witnesses including teachers, family friends, and others said the children were settled here and did not want to go back to the USA. In October 2024, the dad applied to the Supreme Court for the State of New York for an order granting him custody of the children. The court granted the order in January 2025 as well as a warrant for the mum's arrest. However in a 29 page judgment published this week Lady Tait found in the mother's favour. She added:"On the evidence before the court, I am satisfied that if the respondent (the mother) returned with the children to the US, there is a grave risk that she would be arrested and imprisoned and the children would be removed from her care and placed into the care of the petitioner (the father). "To be removed from the respondent's care, even for a short period, and in the context of having been removed from their settled lives in Scotland, would put the children into a situation which they should not be expected to tolerate. "The available evidence is that the children have established good and settled lives in Scotland. "A swift return is now impossible. The court was told that the children were born in the USA and lived there until December 2023 and have not had contact with their dad in almost two years. Their mother, described in courts as an artist, was also born in the US but has UK citizenship through her parents. Throughout her childhood, she frequently visited family members in Scotland. The couple met in 2015 through the Santo Daime movement which the mum described as a religious drug cult. She said members are required to consume Ayahuasca which contains the hallucinogenic drug Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and are also subjected to control from more senior members. She claimed Santo Daime leaders said her baby should taste the 'medicine' before her breast milk to which she complied. The mother said she gave a lot of money to Santo Daime and would do whatever she was told. She also claimed her husband was abusive and controlling and wouldn't allow her to turn on the heating in winter although they had young children. She further claimed he had psychotic episodes and believed he was Jesus Christ. For a time he became fixated on their oldest child not being his. As a result she became fearful that she could not protect the children from their father and the Santo Daime movement if they remained in the USA. However the husband, a delicatessan manager, said he was no longer involved in Santo Daime and accepted that the children should not participate though his mother and brothers are still members. He denied believing he was Jesus Christ or threatening or controlling behaviour. Santo Daime was founded in the 1930s in Brazil. Ceremonies are typically several hours long where Ayahuasca is then drunk. The substance which is made from vines and plants is illegal in the UK because it contains DMT a Class A drug.

Revealed: How long Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio could face in prison as prosecutors seek sentence - after he allegedly shared explicit video involving a minor
Spanish prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio over claims he shared a sexually explicit video involving an underage girl. Asencio, now 22, was not present during the encounter, does not appear in the footage, and is not accused of recording it. His alleged role came later, when he received the video and showed it to a friend — despite prosecutors saying he knew it had been filmed without consent and that one of the girls involved was a minor. The footage was allegedly recorded by three former Real Madrid youth players during a sexual encounter at a beach club in Gran Canaria in June 2023. One of the girls was under 16, while the other was 18. According to court documents, the recording was made secretly and shared in multiple WhatsApp groups, including one titled 'Whatever Ferran Wants'. Prosecutors say Asencio asked for the footage to be sent to him on June 23 — more than a week after the incident — and received it in a single-view format. He is accused of showing it to a third party while in Las Palmas, despite knowing the victims had requested it be deleted. He has been charged with two offences: disclosure of secrets and child pornography. The public prosecutor is seeking two years, six months and one day in prison, along with a €100 daily fine over 24 months and €10,000 in compensation for the victims. The lawyer representing the underage girl has demanded a tougher sentence. In a separate legal submission, the private prosecution is requesting a four-year prison term for Asencio and urging the court to treat him as equally responsible as the players who filmed and circulated the video. The Real Madrid defender is not alleged to have filmed the footage or appeared in it, but is facing charges of disclosing secrets and child pornography While the sentencing requests differ, this is standard in Spain's legal system. The Prosecutor's Office represents the state and proposes sentences based on its interpretation of the law. A private prosecution, acting for the victim, can argue for a harsher penalty if it believes the harm has not been fully addressed. The three players accused of filming and distributing the footage — Ferran Ruiz, Juan Rodriguez and Andres Garcia — face a proposed sentence of four years and seven months, as well as restraining orders and €25,000 in compensation for each of the two victims. None of the men involved have been convicted, and the investigation remains ongoing. Real Madrid have not publicly commented on the case. The three players who allegedly filmed the footage no longer belong to the club.

"I want to be clear that they are not under suspicion – we believe they could have vital information that may help us understand what happened. Jacob's heartbroken mum Carly arrived at the scene moments after the crash, said "18 minutes of him leaving this front door, his life was gone". She called for stricter regulations and safety measures for e-scooters and said "if I can save one life it is going to be worth it". Carly previously described her son as "very loving, headstrong, and a cheeky chappy". "He knew what he wanted in life and he was always going to go for it," she said. She said her son's fatal crash was "something I've never seen before". "You see it on TV but that's your life changing in that split instance it was surreal", Carly added. In conversations with Jacob, the mum said she had warned him not to get on e-bikes or electric scooters, because "he didn't have road sense on his feet never mind on something as powerful as these things". E-scooters are legal to buy and use on private land, but it is illegal to ride them on public roads unless they are hired through an authorised rental scheme. Alongside her calls for e-scooter licences and a ban on their sale to children, Carly wants to see more safety equipment on the vehicles. She said: "When we get in a car we have to wear a seat belt. Why when they get on the e-scooters do they just get to go on them with no helmets [and] no safety equipment?" Carly also wants stricter punishments for those breaching e-scooter laws. The heartbroken mum said: "You think it is never going to be you. I thought the same. I never thought that my son was going to die on an e-scooter. "I hope no other parent, brother, sister... has to go through this because it isn't an easy journey. "I just hope that our message and campaign and... putting my pain into [Jacob's] power is going to save somebody else from doing this." Cops urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has any CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage is asked to get in touch with officers.
