A doctor who studies how a healthy gut can prevent colon cancer does 3 simple things to lower his risk

Colon cancer is rising in people under 50, and poor gut health could be part of the problem.

More people under the age of 50 are getting colon cancer — but it's unclear why. A doctor who researches the link between the disease and our gut microbes has a theory.
"I don't want to give the message that microbes are the entire thing. But we know that there are significant correlations between how much we have of various microbes and cancer," Dr. Neelendu Dey, an associate professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, told Business Insider.
Trillions of microbes live in our colon lining, and research suggests the more diverse they are the better our health and the lower our chances of developing diseases including colon and other forms of cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and depression.
What we eat and our environment affect the make-up of what's known as the gut microbiome, for instance, ultra-processed foods and being sedentary are thought to harm it.
More young people are being diagnosed with colon cancer. Business Insider is telling their stories and helping readers understand how to prevent the disease and what could be causing the spike.

Dey's lab researches how microbes could be used to prevent and treat colon cancer, but everyone's gut microbiome is unique, he said. By understanding how individual microboes respond to different ingredients, they hope to provide personalized dietary recommendations to prevent precancerous polyps from forming.
Dey is 45, the age the American Cancer Society recommends those with an average risk of colon cancer start getting colonoscopies every 10 years. To lower his colon cancer risk, first and foremost, Dey said he follows official advice to get screened. Those at higher risk, for example, with a genetic predisposition, can talk to their doctor to decide if earlier screening is necessary.
But Dey also makes diet and lifestyle choices to look after his gut microbiome, in the hopes of reducing his colon cancer risk.
"The microbiome, I believe, is a long-term player in improving our health," he said. "Working with our microbiome is akin to, let's say, practicing the violin every day if you want to be a good violinist."
1) Eat fiber at every meal
Dey tries to incorporate some fiber into each of his meals, because there is strong data to suggest they can boost gut health over time. Fiber is found in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and oats, and it feeds the "good" bacteria in the gut.
A 2018 study based on The American Gut Project analyzed the stool samples and eating habits of 10,000 people, and found that those who ate 30 types of plant foods a week had more diverse microbiomes than those who ate 10 or fewer.
Being of South Asian descent, Dey often makes Indian dishes, many of which contain lentils, chickpeas, and spices.
"Good" microbes don't all eat the same type of fiber. That's why the authors think eating lots of different types leads to a more diverse microbiome.
2) Avoiding ultra-processed foods
Ultra-processed foods, which can range from foods such as protein bars to oven pizza, are made using ingredients you wouldn't find in a typical kitchen. They contain additives like emulsifiers and gums, often come in plastic packaging, and are designed to be hyperpalatable, making them easy to overeat.
UPFs have been linked to a host of serious health problems, including colon cancer, but are ubiquitous in modern America. For this reason, Dey tries to avoid them when possible, but knows it's not realistic to cut them out entirely.
"When I can control it, certainly I do. If I have the time, I would rather grab the apple than the processed bar that contains an apple," he said.
3) Exercising regularly
Dey is part of a kickball team and exercises independently, too. He does this because, as well as boosting heart health and helping him maintain a healthy weight, working out is beneficial for gut health.
Regular exercise can help food move through the digestive system more quickly, reducing the time the colon is exposed to toxins. Studies suggest that working out can also increase the number of "good" microbes in the gut, improving diversity.
"Certainly, exercise — I find, and I think others find — has huge benefits for gut health," Dey said.

Not so long ago, Brian Valenza woke up at 4:30 a.m. every morning to tackle the day head-on, a habit he inherited from his years of service with the Navy SEALs. At 48, he's sleeping in. Valenza, the CEO of a security firm and co-host of a network of longevity retreats said he still keeps a disciplined routine, but he has changed up his lifestyle with a goal of extending his lifespan. Now, he prioritizes recovery, a healthy social life, and stress management more than ever. "As I get older, I realize the importance of sleep for me. Our kids stay up a little late, we want to spend time with them before they go to college, so we find ourselves sleeping in a little bit later," he told Business Insider. For a veteran SEAL, sleeping in means waking up between 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., usually to swim for a few miles before starting his day. Exercise is a core part of his day. He trains every year for the Navy SEAL Foundation NYC SEAL Swim, a test of endurance involving open-water swimming in the Hudson River with rounds of push-ups and pull-ups to honor veterans. To keep his heart in shape year-round, he logs hours of low-intensity cardio, too. Valenza shared his morning routine with Business Insider — stacked with healthy habits like fasting, hydrating, and meditation to help him maintain peak performance and focus as he gets older. Morning is a crucial time to set the tone for a successful day, Valenza said. His typical day includes: Wake up between 5 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. — depending on how late Valenza stayed up to spend time with his family, he aims to get a full night's sleep even if it means a later start to the day by SEAL standards. Journaling and meditation — Valenza starts each day with a gratitude practice, writing down or mentally reviewing what he's grateful for, and often meditating. Get some sun and time in nature — he swears by seeing sunlight early in the morning to enhance energy and focus. Hydrate with water and a pinch of sea salt — drinking enough water improves physical and mental performance, and salt helps to replenish electrolytes lost to sweat during exercise. Swim — Valenza swims several miles or about 45 minutes several days a week. Swimming is a great exercise for cardiovascular health and is also a low-impact way to strengthen multiple muscle groups, such as the back, core, and legs. Start the workday around 8 a.m. — after a cup of coffee, Valenza said he's ready to start work, but takes periodic breaks to stretch and move around to avoid sitting for too long. Eat the first meal of the day around noon — Valenza practices intermittent fasting, abstaining from food for 14-18 hours a day to give his digestive system a rest. Research suggests some types of fasting may have some benefits for longevity by reducing inflammation and supporting metabolic health. Later in the day, Valenza makes time for relaxation and social connection. Every day after dinner, he takes a long walk with his wife. Low-intensity cardio like walking is a great way to maintain health and fitness and reduce stress. These days, he said, lower-intensity exercise and time for recovery are more important than ever. "If you asked me 10 years ago, I was still trying to beat the 18-year-old," he said. "As you get older, you really have to calculate the long game."

James Van Der Beek was 'doing everything' for his health. One subtle symptom revealed he had stage 3 colon cancer at 46.

For years, James Van Der Beek was invested in optimizing his health. "I was doing everything," Van Der Beek, 48, told Business Insider. "I was doing sauna, cold plunge, weightlifting, Pilates. I would dance and also do football training." The " Dawson's Creek" actor balanced strength training with cardio and ate mostly organic food, "doing all the biohacking things" to stay fit, he said. Then, he started experiencing changes in his bowel movements, a common symptom of colon cancer. He stopped drinking coffee to see if the issue would resolve itself. "It didn't feel like a real symptom of anything," he said. "It wasn't anything that made me rush off to go get screened." When it persisted, he got a colonoscopy. At 46, he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. He waited over a year into treatment before sharing the news publicly in late 2024. With his diagnosis, Van Der Beek joined an alarming number of young people being diagnosed with advanced cancers. Many, like him, had subtle symptoms and healthy lifestyles. While he wishes he'd gotten screened sooner, he said that even in 2023, his options were more limited. It wasn't until 2024 that the Shield blood test, one of a growing number of tests that can spot colon cancer signs from a simple blood draw, was FDA-approved. Van Der Beek, who said he will likely be dealing with cancer for the rest of his life, is now promoting the test to encourage people to get screened earlier, especially as colon cancer cases are rising in patients under the age of 50. He also hopes to raise awareness around symptoms and urge people to get screened as soon as they hit 45, the recommended screening age. "The 'could-have, should-have' train is a black hole," Van Der Beek said. "But don't let my 'could-haves' become yours. That's my biggest message." In 2020, Van Der Beek and his family moved from Los Angeles to Austin. He took a break from acting for a few years and kept busy raising six children alongside his wife, Kimberly. It took time to get settled. While Van Der Beek qualified for an annual colon cancer screening at 45, he said he didn't get a colonoscopy at that point because he was still sorting out his new healthcare situation. He also didn't know that the screening guidelines had changed in 2021, lowering the recommended age from 50 to 45. Getting diagnosed with late-stage cancer in 2023 was a shock, Van Der Beek said, one he's still processing two years later. "It really took a while to set in," he said. "The reality still sets in stages; there are so many unknowns." "All these beautiful things that I love, and I used to define myself as — a father, a provider, a husband — all that got taken away, or at least paused." Stage 3 cancer, in which cancer cells have spread to the lymph nodes but no other organs, typically requires chemotherapy and surgery to treat. Van Der Beek said his "lowest point" in treatment was feeling like he was losing core parts of his identity. "All these beautiful things that I love, and I used to define myself as — a father, a provider, a husband — all that got taken away, or at least paused," he said. "I had to sit there and say, 'Well, what am I?' And it was, 'I'm still worthy of love.'" Van Der Beek said in addition to dealing with the treatment itself, he also had to take on "the full-time job of medical portals and appointments and medication, supplements, tests — trying to organize all that." The actor said that asking for help was hard for him, even though he really needed it. "I don't know how anyone does this alone," he said. "It's been amazing to really see my friends come through in ways that I just never allowed them to before." A month after he publicly announced his colon cancer diagnosis in 2024, Van Der Beek appeared in "The Real Full Monty," a televised special in which he and five other male celebrities stripped to raise cancer awareness. He said that filming the special was the first time he shared the news with anyone outside his inner circle. "It was so life-affirming to see the immediate support and the empathy and just the energy that I got back from it," he said. "I think anytime you push past what's uncomfortable and you get to the other side of fear, there's always some kind of reward." While he used to have a "very tricky relationship" with fame, he looks at it very differently now. "It's been a real blessing, actually, because now I get people telling me they're praying for me all over the place, and I really feel like it helps and I need it, and I am grateful for it," he said. "It connects me to so many people I otherwise would never get to connect with." He wants younger people to get screened Colon cancer cases are rising worldwide, particularly among people around or below the recommended screening age, which the US has dropped to meet the growing rate among younger patients. In addition to wanting to raise general awareness about when to get screened or what symptoms to look for, Van Der Beek is passionate about alternative screening options. While colonoscopies are considered the gold standard in testing because doctors can remove precancerous polyps, they can be expensive, time-consuming, and uncomfortable, involving laxatives and anesthesia. "I did not find a colonoscopy to be all that pleasant," Van Der Beek said. "For people who are in a job where they can't take that kind of time off of work, it can be a challenge." Increasingly, there are less invasive at-home tests that can provide answers. For example, Cologuard and FIT are widely used at-home tests that detect the presence of cancer in stool samples. The Shield test is a blood test performed on people of average risk who are 45 and older. If the result is positive, a colonoscopy is the next step. Shield's research found that when their blood draw was offered to patients, colon cancer screening rates more than doubled. Caught in its earlier stages, colon cancer is very treatable. It's why Van Der Beek hopes more people get screened, however they choose to do it. He still remembers one of his first reactions when he got diagnosed. He wondered about the best thing that could come of his situation. "What's the thing that I'm going to look back on this in 20 years and say, 'Thank God that happened?" he said. "So what can I do to make that the case?" So far, raising awareness has given him a lot of purpose throughout his ongoing treatment. "I've learned a lot. If I can save anyone from having to go through this, that's magic," he said.

Dr. Kurt Hong researches how what a person eats impacts how they age. Hong follows the Mediterranean diet, which has been deemed the healthiest eating plan for years. His top tip is to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and wholegrains, but not to overeat. As an obesity doctor, nutrition researcher, and professor of medicine and aging, Kurt Hong has dedicated his life to understanding the link between our diets and longevity, and helping patients avoid diseases like type two diabetes and cancer. But his career isn't entirely selfless, he told Business Insider. "I always joke with my wife that I also do this for selfish reasons," Hong said, "I'm always looking for ways to stay young." To the 52-year-old father of three, age is just a number thanks to lifestyle choices we can make. "Your body may tell you you're 52 years old, but you can behave or you can feel like a 35-year-old. And it can be the other way around as well." He added: "A lot of the age-related chronic diseases are directly related to what you eat and your weight." Hong's approach to harnessing our diets to age well is simple and centered around the Mediterranean diet. It consists mainly of fresh produce, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins, and has been voted the healthiest way to eat eight years running by the US News and World Report. Hong, the chief medical officer of Lifeforce, a concierge preventive medicine company, and a professor at the University of Southern California, shared the four simple dietary rules he follows to stay healthy for as long as possible. Eat your veggies Hong's No. 1 piece of advice is simply to eat your fruits and vegetables. He prioritizes getting enough plants, including whole grains, in his diet because they contain fiber. Diets high in fiber are associated with a lower risk of multiple types of cancer, lower cholesterol levels, a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, and a healthy gut microbiome: the community of microbes that live in the colon lining and are thought to impact overall health. "The other part of it is that by getting your fruits and vegetables, you also get a lot of the vitamins," Hong said. Plenty of evidence suggests that people who eat more plants are likely to be healthier than those who don't. In a 2019 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, which followed over 12,000 people for 29 years, those who reported eating about four to five servings of plants a day, and little to no processed or red meat, were 18 to 25% less likely to die prematurely than those who relied more on meat and other animal products. Eat a lot of fish Hong's main source of animal protein is fish, because it's rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and protein. "I eat a lot of fish," he said. Wild-caught salmon, albacore tuna, and halibut are his favorites, and he mostly bakes or poaches them. Fish contains omega-three fatty acids, which are essential for brain health. A 2024 meta-analysis published in the journal Aging Clinical and Experimental Research found that eating fish was associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. The vitamins and minerals in fish, as well as omega-three, are thought to be brain-boosting, the authors said. "Even if you don't eat fish daily, try for just two, three times a week," Hong said. Don't overeat Hong also pays attention to how much he's eating. "You can eat all the right things, but if you still carry that extra weight, there's still a level of systemic inflammation that's contributing to your risk of chronic disease," he said. "If your body's burning 2,000 calories, but you're eating 6,000 calories of fruits and vegetables, guess what? You're still going to gain weight." Although it is contested whether a person's size is an indicator of their health, being overweight or obese is linked to a greater risk of several health conditions, including type two diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer. To meet his nutritional goals — which are to eat enough protein, plants, and healthy fats, while maintaining a healthy weight — Hong eats higher-calorie foods in moderation. For example, he may grab three hard-boiled eggs for breakfast, eat the higher-protein whites, and remove the higher-calorie yolks from two. "It allows me to hit my calorie goals a little bit easier, but still allows me to make sure that I get to my protein goal as well," he said. "So it's the right volume and also the right type of food," Hong said. Meal prep to avoid ultra-processed foods Ultra-processed foods are typically packaged and contain ingredients you wouldn't find in a regular kitchen. They're generally convenient and cheap, but eating lots of them has been linked to a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, and dying early from any cause. Hong understands that it's nearly impossible to eliminate ultra-processed foods entirely because they're "everywhere." But to eat fewer UPFs, he meal preps as much as possible. "I do still have business meetings out where I have to grab dinners and other things. But you do the best you can," he said. For people who are time-strapped, he suggested trying out a meal delivery service. "They'll ship it to your home where you have to put everything together within about 20, 30 minutes.
