Wimbledon 2025: Frances Tiafoe upset in second round by Cameron Norrie

Yahooa day ago
The upsets keep coming at Wimbledon. Following an upset-heavy first round, American Frances Tiafoe added his name to the list of disappointing performers after an upset loss to Cameron Norrie on Tuesday.
Tiafoe lost the match in four sets (6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 7-5).
Tiafoe got off to a decent start, taking the first set 6-4 to secure a lead. But he couldn't hold that momentum. Tiafoe dropped the next two sets against Norrie 4-6, 3-6, to fall behind in the match.

With Tiafoe on the ropes, the American decided to take a lengthy bathroom break ahead of the fourth set. His absence lingered longer than expected, causing some to accuse Tiafoe of trying to halt Norrie's momentum. Tiafoe was gone long enough that some sites erroneously listed the match as over after just three sets, leading some to wonder whether Tiafoe retired due to an injury.
That was not the case. Tiafoe returned to the court for the fourth set, and initially seemed reinvigorated as he resumed play. But Norrie once again fought back, taking a 4-3 lead in the set. Tiafoe again showed signs of life, taking the next two games to make it 5-4, but Norrie battled back to win the set.
Norrie didn't miss his opportunity to send Tiafoe packing. The Brit won the next two games, winning the fourth set, and the match 7-5.

Supreme Court will take up a new case about which school sports teams transgender students can join

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court agreed Thursday to hear a case over state restrictions on which school sports teams transgender students can join. Just two weeks after upholding a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth, the justices said they will review lower court rulings in favor of transgender athletes in Idaho and West Virginia. The nationwide battle over the participation of transgender girls on girls sports teams has played out at both the state and federal levels as Republicans have leveraged the issue as a fight for athletic fairness for women and girls. More than two dozen states have enacted laws barring transgender women and girls from participating in certain sports competitions. Some policies have been blocked in court. At the federal level, the Trump administration has filed lawsuits and launched investigations over state and school policies that have allowed transgender athletes to compete freely. This week, the University of Pennsylvania modified a trio of school records set by transgender swimmer Lia Thomas and said it would apologize to female athletes 'disadvantaged' by her participation on the women's swimming team, part of a resolution of a federal civil rights case. The case will be argued in the fall.

Clayton Kershaw joins the 3,000-strikeout club. Will anybody else get there?

Clayton Kershaw, by far the greatest left-handed pitcher of his generation, struck out the 3,000th batter of his career Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium. He became the 20th pitcher in history to do so. He might just be the last. As Kershaw's career demonstrates, reaching the hallowed 3,000 strikeout mark is as much a test of talent as it is of durability. Even Kershaw, who won three Cy Young Awards in four years and was so dominant that he was voted MVP in one of them, nearly broke down physically before he could get there.
