Power over Ethernet (PoE) continues to gain momentum as both a practical and scalable way to deliver data and power across a single cable.
It's simplifying network design and deployment for a wide range of applications.
PoE enables Ethernet cables to carry electrical power in dedicated wires alongside those used for data transmission. This dual-function approach allows a single connection to supply both power and data to devices such as wireless access points, IP cameras and VoIP phones.
By combining two essential functions into one cable, PoE reduces the need for additional electrical wiring, streamlines installation, and increases design flexibility across various network environments.
PoE works by injecting power into the Ethernet cable at the source, typically through a PoE switch or injector. The powered devices (PDs) at the other end - such as IP cameras or wireless access points - are designed to receive both data and power through the same connection. This avoids the need for separate power supplies and helps to reduce installation complexity.
One of the most immediate benefits of PoE is simplified installation. There's no requirement for separate power cables, electrical outlets or dedicated wiring, which can often make the installation process quicker, easier and more cost-effective.
PoE also enhances flexibility. Devices can be placed in locations where it would be challenging or costly to install electrical infrastructure.
This is particularly useful in outdoor settings, remote locations or areas with limited access to mains power.
In addition to flexibility, PoE offers long-term cost savings. By removing the need for additional electrical infrastructure, installations are less resource-intensive and often do not require the services of a licensed electrician. For many projects, this can significantly reduce both upfront costs and ongoing maintenance requirements.
Another key strength of PoE is its scalability. As networks evolve, PoE makes it easy to add, move or replace devices without extensive rewiring or additional power planning. This adaptability supports growth while minimising disruption.
PoE is already widely used across industries and sectors. It supports wireless access points in offices, schools and public venues; enables the installation of IP security cameras in hard-to-reach areas; powers VoIP phones without separate adaptors; and runs digital signage in locations such as airports and retail stores.
It also plays a vital role in smart building systems by linking sensors, controllers and connected devices into a unified infrastructure for automation and energy management.
To support these diverse requirements, we offer a full range of PoE solutions tailored to modern network demands. Our powered fibre cable systems combine high-performance, low-latency fibre-optic data transmission with a copper low-voltage DC power connection.
This hybrid configuration allows multiple powered devices to connect over long distances without requiring additional conduit or bulky cabling.
We also offer PoE extenders that can extend PoE delivery up to three kilometres at 15 watts - ideal for large campuses, airports, parking facilities and other outdoor environments. These solutions are designed to simplify power calculations, ensure reliable delivery, and support a wide range of applications.
By integrating power and connectivity, our PoE solutions make it easier for network operators and building managers to deploy devices exactly where they're needed - without being constrained by existing electrical layouts.
We see PoE as a foundational element in building networks that are not only efficient, but also easier to scale, relocate and maintain. Whether you're deploying wireless access points, rolling out security systems, or planning the next generation of smart buildings, PoE provides the flexibility and simplicity required to support evolving digital infrastructure.
For organisations looking to upgrade their networks or implement new device connectivity, Power over Ethernet continues to offer a clear path forward - bringing together power and data in one streamlined solution.

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise adds PROFINET to boost IT-OT unity

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise has launched PROFINET protocol support as part of its latest AOS 8.10R3 software update for industrial networks. PROFINET is recognised as a widely adopted industrial protocol, enabling real-time and deterministic communication between components such as sensors, controllers, and central systems within factories and critical infrastructure. The protocol is a key enabler in sectors such as factory automation, transportation, energy, and utilities, where low latency and high reliability are essential. The introduction of PROFINET support allows native operation over industrial Ethernet, eliminating the need for external gateways. According to the company, this reduces the complexity often seen in managing hybrid IT and operational technology (OT) networks. Customers are expected to benefit from a unified and converged infrastructure, with centralised policy enforcement and management via the OmniVista platform. The new capabilities also offer high availability, which is necessary for always-on, mission-critical operations. Furthermore, the update facilitates a smoother progression to Industry 4.0, allowing for simultaneous support of both industrial and enterprise protocols within the same network infrastructure. IT-OT convergence Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise has described this update as being in line with its ongoing vision for IT-OT convergence, aiming to deliver an architecture—supported by OmniFabric—that reliably and securely links people, applications, objects, and business processes. "With PROFINET support now available on the OmniSwitch 6465 Industrial Ethernet Switch, ALE enables industrial networks to benefit from enterprise-class switches with centralized management, advanced segmentation, security and real-time visibility," Henrique Amaro, Business Line Manager Network - Transportation, Energy & Utilities at Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, stated. The company stated that the addition of PROFINET into its industrial switch range is intended to strengthen its position in serving industrial and critical infrastructure sectors. Such sectors include smart manufacturing, automated railways, intelligent energy grids, and urban mobility systems, all of which are increasingly looking to combine IT and OT assets for enhanced operational efficiency. Sector needs The announcement highlights a broader trend among industrial operators towards greater integration of IT and OT. The new software aims to provide ALE customers with the ability to manage complex, mixed environments through a single management interface, enabling adherence to both enterprise and operational requirements. Customers should be able to implement policy controls centrally, ensuring compliance and improving both oversight and standardisation across different systems and processes. In sectors where downtime or data loss can lead to significant disruptions, the high-availability features of the AOS 8.10R3 update are expected to be particularly relevant. Positioning for modernization By bringing PROFINET support to its portfolio and aligning with industry standards, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise continues its emphasis on providing secure networking and communication solutions to organisations that are pursuing greater digitalisation and operational efficiency in demanding environments. All ALE solutions are designed with built-in security, minimal environmental impact, and full compliance with national data sovereignty regulations and international industry standards for data protection. Guided by its three core pillars—environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and corporate governance—ALE delivers technology that benefits the environment, people, and businesses alike. With over a century of innovation, ALE has earned the trust of more than one million customers globally. Headquartered in France and supported by a network of 3,400 business partners, the company combines worldwide reach with strong local presence.
