Civil defence mock drills equips people to be prepared during emergency situation
With a primary objective to strengthen emergency response framework and assess the readiness of people in the advent of a wartime or crisis situation, 'Operation Abhyas' was carried out in Visakhapatnam which was designated as category II city for the exercise.
In Visakhapatnam, the civil defence mock drill was carried out in different locations, includ-ing Andhra University College of Engineering and One Town Area.
The exercise was conducted to make people be prepared in case of any emergency situation by cooperating with each other. Personnel from the Navy, Army Coast Guard, revenue, among other wings, chipped in for the exercise.
As part of the simulated hostile attack scenario, some of the victims were carried over the shoulders by the rescue teams, a few others were shifted to an ambulance.
With perfect coordination of police, civil agents, navy, NDRF and SDRF, the mock drills were carried out in an effective manner.
In line with the Central government's guidelines, the district administration conducted a civil defence mock drill at several places in Visakhapatnam city.
The security forces gave demonstrations to alert the public and be aware of how to respond in case of unexpected terrorist attacks. Civil defence, fire service, SDRF, NDRF, police, GVMC, revenue, civil supplies, medical department and several volunteers participated in the operation 'Operation Abhyas' held at two different venues in One Town Area-- Ranibomma centre and Queen Mary Girls' High School.
Earlier, the fire department personnel conducted the exercise at two apartment buildings in Ranibomma centre in a simulated situation where militants attacked them with smoke bombs. The rescue teams saved the trapped people. Later, SDRF teams conducted a special mock drill at Queen Mary Girls' High School to prepare the students and the public.
They gave demonstrations on how to rescue students and teachers stuck in classrooms and how they have to respond during such emergency situations. They explained to the people how to respond when the alarm rings and how to reach a safe zone. They showed how to save themselves from the top of the buildings with the help of ropes.
During the mock drill, the SDRF officials made the people aware of the use of the equipment in the special vehicle and how to escape from the spot. SDRF IG Rajakumari, District Collec-tor MN Harendhira Prasad, Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi, Joint Collector K Mayur Ashok supervised the exercise. The security forces alerted the people on how to re-spond if the power supply gets interrupted and attacks are launched.
Speaking on the occasion, District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad informed that in the next few days, civil mock drills will be conducted in all ward secretariats in the city and the peo-ple will be alerted against terror attacks.
Earlier, a mock drill was also conducted at Andhra University College of Engineering in co-ordination with NCC cadets and NRDC team.
The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway conducted a civil defence mock drill as per the directive of the Union Home Ministry. The exercise was held at the Divisional Railway Man-ager's Office under the supervision of Senior Divisional Safety Officer MK Sahoo, with active participation from a team of civil defence volunteers and other stakeholders.
The mock drill simulated a hostile attack scenario to assess emergency preparedness and enhance coordination among various departments and agencies. Activities included blackout procedures, evacuation to designated safe zones, shutdown of non-essential lighting, and comprehensive rescue operations.
Meanwhile, Jana Jagrana Samiti hailed 'Operation Sindoor' by holding the national flags at RK Beach near Victory at Sea. Samiti city convener Ch Sunil Kumar appealed to the Union government to continue the operation until all the militants were killed.

Collector stresses on micro-level flood preparedness measures in Eluru district
With flood threats mounting over the Godavari region, Eluru Collector K. Vetri Selvi directed all the departments to adopt micro-level planning and execute a robust disaster management action plan to tackle both riverine and flash floods. At a review meeting on Tuesday, the Collector emphasised early preparedness under the Flood Contingency Plan, calling for the formation of disaster response committees at the village, mandal, and division levels. Officials were instructed to maintain updated emergency contact lists and keep resources ready from key departments such as Revenue, Police, Irrigation, Electricity, and Fire Services. To ensure real-time responsiveness, a 24x7 control room will be set up and mandal-level WhatsApp groups formed for emergency alerts. Inter-district coordination teams involving ASR, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, and Krishna districts will also be activated. In flood-prone areas like Kukkunoor and Velerupadu, phased evacuation plans have been ordered based on flood alert levels. Relief centres will be jointly inspected by RWS, DPO, electricity, and MPDO officials to ensure essential services such as food stocks, temporary toilets, and medical kits are available. Health teams have been directed to prepare for outbreaks of dengue, diarrhoea, and viral fevers, with medicines and mobile ambulances on standby. Rescue infrastructure that consists of JCBs, boats, and fire safety equipment will be pre-positioned, and the RTC has been asked to ready buses for evacuation. Veterinary officials were told to stock fodder and launch awareness drives on livestock safety. Repairs to damaged buildings, deployment of drones for aerial surveillance, and intensified sanitation measures have also been planned. Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy said generators and essential goods for three months are in place, and rehabilitation centres are being identified for displaced families. The Joint Collector added that generators have been prepared for power backup and that stockpiles of essential commodities have been secured for the next three months. She emphasised the need to identify and equip rehabilitation centres with proper infrastructure. The meeting saw participation from district officials across departments.

Dehradun (Uttarakhand)[India], June 29(ANI): Two bodies have been recovered after nine workers went missing from an under-construction hotel following a cloudburst in the Silai Band area on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi, officials said on Sunday. Bodies of two out of the nine workers have been recovered who went missing from an under-construction hotel, at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunatri road in Uttarkashi, after the cloud burst incident, Uttarkashi District Magistrate's office stated in a statement. There have been landslides at two places before Silai Band and a washout of the road at one place, the statement added. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday reviewed the situation with senior officials at the State Disaster Control Room following the cloudburst incident at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri road in Uttarkashi district. Earlier today, he stated that State Disaster Response Forces (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other teams are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations at the landslide-hit Silai Band area in Uttarkashi district. In a post on X, the CM wrote, 'In the tragic incident of a landslide in the Silai Band area of Barkot Tehsil, Uttarkashi district, it has been reported that some workers are missing. Teams including SDRF, NDRF, and others have reached the site and are engaged in intensive relief and rescue operations.' The CM further stated he was in constant contact with the concerned authorities. 'I am in constant contact with the concerned authorities regarding this matter. I pray to God for everyone's safety,' the post further read. Meanwhile, as many as nine workers staying at an under-construction hotel site went missing after a cloudburst severely damaged the construction site at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri Marg in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district. Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya, while speaking to ANI, stated, 'Due to a cloud burst in Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunotri Marg of Uttarkashi district, a hotel under construction has suffered heavy damage. Eighty-nine workers staying at this under-construction hotel site are missing.' 'Eight-nine workers staying at this under-construction hotel site are missing,' Arya stated, adding that the Yamunotri route has also been severely impacted. He also informed that the Yamunotri Marg had also been affected by the heavy rainfall and debris. Furthermore, the Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for 24 hours amid a heavy rain alert. Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey told ANI that the pilgrimage has been temporarily halted as a precaution. 'I have given instructions to the police and administration officials to stop the pilgrims in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Sonprayag and Vikasnagar,' Pandey told. The suspension follows the cloudburst at Silai Band and the ongoing heavy rainfall, which has disrupted travel. Continuous rainfall on Saturday caused severe disruptions across Uttarakhand, including blockage of the National Highway near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. In a post on X, Chamoli Police Uttarakhand stated, 'The Badrinath National Highway is blocked near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. Work is underway to open the road.'The National Highway near Nandprayag is a critical route for pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath, making the clearance of the road a priority. (ANI)

Chennai airport conducts full scale emergency mock drill to assess crash preparedness
Chennai: An aircraft engulfed in flames, fire and crash extinguishers rushing to put out the fire, NDRF personnel rescuing victims, medical teams attending to passengers with burn injuries, ambulances zipping through the traffic — it all seemed realistic. The full-scale emergency mock drill at the OTA premises on GST Road brought together various stakeholders of Chennai airport to assess their preparedness and readiness in case of a flight crash near the airport. Initially, onlookers and passersby panicked as they heard about the 'mayday call', saw medical teams triaging patients based on injuries, watched CISF personnel cordoning off the area and the bomb squad checking the luggage for suspected ammunition. The drill caused a traffic snarl on the GST road for about an hour as vehicle movement was restricted to make way for ambulances. It took a while for people to understand that it was an exercise being carried out by several govt agencies as a practice to manage future emergencies. The entire exercise was monitored and evaluated by DGCA representatives, air traffic controllers, and district administration to identify performance metrics that need improvement. However, this time authorities planned it outside the airport. DGCA instructed all the airports to carry out a full-scale emergency exercise at the earliest after the Ahmedabad incident, which occurred outside the airport. Though the exercise was originally scheduled for December, it was advanced as per DGCA instructions.
