Steamship marks 125 years sailing on scenic Scottish loch
The festival is the centrepiece of a special anniversary year for the Steamship Sir Walter Scott, which was crowned Flagship of the Year 2025 by National Historic Ships UK in April.

SS Sir Walter Scott returns to Loch Katrine
An actor portraying Sir Walter Scott joined the celebrations, honouring the poet whose 1810 masterpiece 'The Lady of the Lake' made him and Loch Katrine, where the poem is set, famous.
Built in 1899 at Denny's Shipyard in Dumbarton on the Clyde, Steamship Sir Walter Scott was commissioned to replace the ageing and smaller Rob Roy steamer and help satisfy the huge demand for sailings from the large numbers of visitors flocking to the Trossachs.
Tributes were also paid to Captain John MacKinnon, who steered the maiden voyage in 1900. A larger-than-life figure, Captain MacKinnon and his family played a defining role in the first half of the Steamer's life. He remained at the helm until his death, when his son Donald took over as captain. During both World Wars, John and Donald's daughters also cared for the ship.
Highlights of this weekend's Steamboat Festival at Trossachs Pier include pirate-themed cruises aboard the Rob Roy Smuggler, complete with storytelling, face painting, and a treasure hunt, alongside a flotilla of classic and model steamboats sailing on the loch. There will also be live music, traditional games, appearances from costumed performers, local food and drink tastings, craft stalls, and fascinating heritage exhibitions.

James Fraser, CEO and Lead Trustee of Steamship Sir Walter Scott said: "To see 125 schoolchildren aboard this morning's voyage, representing the future, on a vessel that has been sailing since their great-great-grandparents' time, was truly emotional.
"This Steamer is more than a boat: she symbolises the Trossachs' unrivalled cultural heritage in Scotland. She was saved for the nation by incredible public support, and today she sails on, restored, celebrated, and loved.
"As we mark 125 years, we do so with gratitude and pride. We invite everyone to join us at Loch Katrine this weekend to celebrate a remarkable past and a bright future for this Scottish treasure."
The Steamboat Festival runs across the weekend, with Steamship Sir Walter Scott sailing three times a day in her anniversary year until October 26th.

She penned: "I never thought I would be sat here writing a goodbye. For those who knew Gary, oh you were so lucky. His passion and dedication was inspiring, whether in hockey, work, or with loved ones. I'm struggling to understand how you are no longer with me. "It hasn't really hit me yet. Gary taught and showed me valuable lessons that I'll carry with me forever. I think it's important to remember the good times and to celebrate the love he brought into our lives." She went on: "Everything feels heavy, and words can't express the love I have for Gary. I wish you could see how much you are loved. Even though our experiences together have paused, the memories we made will stay with me forever. I miss you so much already. "Thank you for the kind messages about Gary; they mean a lot. I love you forever and always, Gary Kelly." Spanish authorities confirmed in a statement that they were alerted to the incident at around 12.40am, reports the Daily Record. An investigation has been initiated following the most recent fatality at the hotel. Evan Thomson, from Aberdeen, tragically lost his life just two weeks ago at the same four-star hotel. The 26-year-old, who was on holiday with a mate celebrating his birthday, fell to his death on July 7. Gary, who played ice hockey for both Dundee Stars and Aberdeen Lynx last season, was remembered as a "hugely talented and charismatic individual". His sister, Kharis Kelly, also left a heartfelt tribute saying: "Our hearts are shattered beyond words. Our handsome boy has gone to the other side, Absolutely no words. We are asking everyone to respect our privacy as a family while we try to navigate through this tragic news. You'll forever be our boy Gary, Sleep tight." A spokesman for the Spanish Civil Guard added: "The fall could be accidental based on the early information obtained from cameras but as part of the investigation possible witnesses will need to be located and interviewed. The results of the post-mortem will also be important to the investigation." On Monday, bosses at Ibiza Rocks said they were "deeply shocked and devastated" following the latest tragedy as they suspended all events at the hotel. Scottish ostrich egg used to crack world record for biggest Scotch egg
An ostrich egg from a Scottish farm has been used to break the record for the biggest Scotch egg ever made. Social media chefs Phoenix Ross and Oli Paterson have been recognised for smashing the 20-year-old Guinness World Record. Isla French, co-owner of Little Rowater Farm in Banff in Aberdeenshire, said she was 'amazed' to discover one of her ostrich eggs was used. 'I appreciate good food and just love to see something from my farm be used for a Guinness World Record,' she told STV News. The chefs, from Enfield in England, bought five eggs from the farm – three of which were used in their attempt to break the record on June 17. Phoenix said he has 'wanted to break a world record since he was a kid.' Oliver told STV News: 'We looked at a few world records, and burrito was unbeatable at 2.4km long, and sausage roll was 111m. 'When we found 6.2kg scotch egg, we knew it was the one.' After one failed attempt, the duo succeeded in breaking the record with a fully intact scotch egg weighing almost 8kg – more than a bowling ball. The previous record was 6kg and stood for almost 20 years. The Scotch egg was made by being wrapped in sausage meat then covered in bread crumbs and deep fried before being put in an oven. The whole process took over 24 hours. Oliver said: 'It feels great to break the record, now 'were fingers crossed for getting in the book and setting our sights on new records.' Guinness World Record Isla French, 37, said she was stunned to learn her farm produce had played a part. 'When I sell these eggs, I never have an idea of where they go or what people do with them – this is a nice surprise,' Isla said. 'Someone's taken something from my little and got a Guinness World Record, it's just wow.' Isla French and her husband George, 42, started their family farm over ten years ago and have had an enclosure for ostriches from almost the start. They sells each egg, which weighs up to 1.8kg and contains 1.2 litres of contents, for £25. Each egg is the equivalent of 24 hen eggs. Isla French Isla said she and her family use eggs for omelettes, pancakes and baking as well as make huge fried eggs. 'We're a family farm and when our children are asked where eggs come from, they say ostriches. 'To them, that's normal.' However, she has never seen anything as 'inspiring' or as 'clever' as the ambition to make a Scotch egg with it. The French family had previously appeared on the BBC series This Farming Life. Isla French The ostrich egg holds the record for the largest egg produced by any living bird. The average example measures 6–8 in (15–20 cm) in length, 4–6 in (10–15 cm) in diameter and weighs 3 lb 10 oz–3 lb 14 oz (1.65–1.78 kg) – equal to the volume of 24 hen's eggs. It also holds the record for toughest egg produced by a bird – it can withstand the weight of a 115-kg (253-lb 8-oz) person and often having to be cracked open with a hammer. Ostrich themselves are the world's largest bird and can reach speed of up to 70km an hour. They can also live up to 75 years in captivity.
