Gautam Gambhir's 'Surprising' Call Stuns Experts; Ricky Ponting Gives Blunt 'Logic' Take

NDTV6 days ago
The decision taken by the Indian cricket team management to send Shardul Thakur to bat at No. 7 ahead of Washington Sundar stunned experts during the fourth Test match against England at Old Trafford. When Sai Sudharsan got out on Wednesday, there was still an hour left on the clock but India decided to go with Shardul ahead of the in-form Sundar. The decision by head coach Gautam Gambhir and Co could the commentators by surprise as they did not expect the visitors to use Shardul as a 'night watchman'. While Ravi Shastri and Dinesh Karthik tried to make sense of the decision, former Australia cricket team skipper Ricky Ponting went on to say that he was trying to work out the 'logic' behind the call.
"I'm just trying to work out the logic from India here as to why they've sent Shardul in ahead of Washington Sundar. Just looking at the numbers, I mean, Washington averages nearly 39 in Test cricket and Shardul is down at 17. And he's [Sundar] not being sent out. He's [Shardul] not a night watchman, there's still 40 minutes of play here, and a new ball around the corner," Ponting said.
Shastri, who was also in the commentary box, agreed with the him saying: "All the more reason [to send Sundar ahead of Shardul]". He played in the first Test match. Dismissed pretty cheaply, a couple of loose shots," referring to Thakur's scores of 1 and 4 in the series opener in Leeds last month."
Karthik, who replaced Ponting in the commentary box after some time, echoed similar sentiments.
"I was extremely surprised too, considering how well Washington has batted, not only in this series, but in the recent past – and he's batted better with batters around. He's not been that effective with the tail."

India men's football head coach: What makes Khalid Jamil frontrunner ahead of Stephen Constantine & Stefan Tarkovic?

The Indian men's football team will have a new head coach when the All India Football Federation (AIFF) executive committee meets virtually on Friday. Following the departure of Manolo Marquez, the AIFF had invited applications for the position. The governing body of Indian football in the country shortlisted Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic among the 170 names submitted. Jamil is currently coaching Jamshedpur FC in the ongoing Durand Cup while Constantine is a former India head coach. Tarkovic, who had been a national team coach, has no links with Indian football. However, among the three, Jamil looks to be the frontrunner for the top job. A former player, Tarkovic has been at helm for his native Slovakia and Kyrgyzstan - a criteria that will be given preference according to the AIFF advertisement. However, Tarkovic lack of knowledge about Indian football puts him out of contention for the job. Tarkovic's last assignment was with Kyrgyzstan that ended in June 2024. Why Stephen Constantine is unlikely to get third term? Constantine, 62, has been India head coach twice, from 2002-05 and 2015-19. The Anglo-Cypriot was also in charge of East Bengal in the Indian Super League in 2022-23 but the club's ninth-place finish could put him at a disadvantage. Constantine took charge of Pakistan in 2023 and though they won a first World Cup qualifier (against Cambodia) under him, it turned out to be his only win in 10 matches in charge.

'My Son Looks Little Depressed': Abhimanyu Easwaran's Father Slams Gambhir & Co.

Last Updated: Abhimanyu Easwaran's father questions his son's absence from India's Test team despite strong performances, stressing that IPL results shouldn't affect Test selections. Star Indian batter Abhimanyu Easwaran's father, Ranganathan, has said that although he is not keeping a count of the days, he is counting the years rather. Notably, several players have debuted since Easwaran first received an India call-up up but he hasn't found a place in the XI yet. In 2021, Abhimanyu received two call-ups from BCCI, albeit as a standby, first for a home Test series against England and then for the WTC final against New Zealand. Easwaran's first official inclusion in the Indian team came in 2022, for the Test series against Bangladesh. 'I'm not keeping a count of the number of days that Abhimanyu has been waiting for his Test debut. I am counting the years; it has been three years now. What is the job of a player? It is to score runs," Ranganathan said. 'He has done that. People said he didn't perform in two India A matches during the last tour of Australia and didn't get into the team, which is fair enough. But Karun Nair wasn't in the team during the period when Abhimanyu performed before the BGT," Ranganathan added. He said that he has been in regular touch with Abhimanyu throughout the series, trying to keep him motivated. 'My son looks a little depressed, but that is bound to happen. Some players jump the gun based on IPL performances, which earn them a spot in the Test team. IPL performances should not be counted while selecting the team for the longest format," Ranganathan said. 'Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy should be the basis for Test selection," Ranganathan added. Abhimanyu has been out of action for the last month. He scored two half-centuries against the England Lions ahead of the Test series while batting at No. 3 but Sai Sudharsan and Nair have been preferred ahead of him in the series. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Ganguly sends blunt message to Gill, Gambhir after Kuldeep is overlooked for England Tests: 'Without quality spin...'

Kuldeep Yadav ended up getting sidelined for the entire tour of England despite India making four changes to their XI for the series final at The Oval, and former India captain Sourav Ganguly felt the left-arm wrist spinner is someone who is 'crucial' for Indian cricket and needs to be persisted with. read more Former India captain Sourav Ganguly felt left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav deserved to be included in India's playing XI at some point in the five-match Test series in England. Image: PTI/Reuters Former India captain Sourav Ganguly gave current skipper Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir a reminder of Kuldeep Yadav's value after the left-arm wrist spinner was sidelined for the entirety of the five-match Test series in England. Kuldeep was relegated to the bench for the fifth time in as many games despite India making four changes to their XI for the series finale, with captain Gill and coach Gambhir opting to stick with all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar as their spin options. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I think England went with four fast bowlers. They left a bit of grass on the wicket — I'm presuming that was deliberate. India have had quality spinners like Jadeja and Ashwin in the past. I really wish Kuldeep had played in Manchester, at Lord's, and even in Birmingham. Without quality spin, it's hard to bowl a team out on Day 5,' former BCCI president Ganguly told reporters at an event in Kolkata on Thursday. Ganguly, incidentally, isn't the only former Indian cricketer batting in favour of Kuldeep's inclusion in England; batting icon Sunil Gavaskar as well as spin legends Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh too had made similar statements recently, with Harbhajan having called for his inclusion from the series opener at Headingley. Kuldeep 'crucial for India's future', says Ganguly 'Dada', for one, felt the 30-year-old is someone who is 'crucial' for India's future and needs to be persisted with. 'We saw what happened when India batted — there wasn't a top-class spinner in England's attack, and they couldn't take wickets. In the past, teams had great spinners — whether it was Warne, Muralitharan, England's Swann and Panesar, or even our own Harbhajan and Kumble. Kuldeep is someone India must persist with. He's crucial for our future,' he added. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant sat out of the final Test at The Oval due to workload management and a foot fracture respectively, while all-rounder Shardul Thakur and pacer Anshul Kamboj were benched. The visitors brought Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna in their place, with Akash returning to action after missing the fourth Test in Manchester due to fitness issues. Nair, meanwhile, returns to the lineup after being left out of the XI at Old Trafford, and possibly has a final shot at saving his place in the Test team, having made his comeback after an eight-year absence earlier in the ongoing series. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD England captain Ollie Pope, filling in for the injured Ben Stokes, opted to field after India lost the toss for the 15th consecutive time in international cricket.
