Tension in Pudukkottai's Vadakadu following clash between two communities; Dalit family's hut set on fire
Members of the Muthuraja and SC/PR communities, who reportedly had prior enmity, got into a confrontation that escalated when a man from one group was attacked with a sickle by members of the other group.
In the ensuing violence, a hut and two two-wheelers were set on fire. A government bus was also vandalized, with its windows smashed. More than 10 people from both sides sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at Alangudi Government Hospital and Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, Tiruchy Range DIG Varunkumar and Law Minister S. Regupathy visited the affected areas around 1:30 am to assess the situation.
Heavy police deployment has been made in Vadakadu, and transport services in the area have been suspended. Buses on the Pudukkottai-Pattukottai route are being diverted via alternate routes.

Tirunelveli caste killing accused Surjith detained under Goondas Act
Tirunelveli City Commissioner of Police Santosh Hadimani has ordered the detention of S. Surjith (23) of KTC Nagar in Palayamkottai, under the Goondas Act. Surjith was arrested in connection with the murder of a Scheduled Caste (SC) IT professional C. Kavin Selvaganesh (27) on Sunday (July 27, 2025). An official statement from the Tirunelveli City Police said Kavin, of Arumugamangalam in Thoothukudi district, was murdered at Ashtalakshmi Nagar in KTC Nagar under the Palayamkottai police station limits. The Palayamkottai police registered a case and subsequently arrested Surjith from Mangammal Salai in KTC Nagar, on charges of murder. The statement further said the Commissioner of Police ordered Surjith's detention under the Goondas Act, as he posed a threat to the maintenance of law and order by committing the crime. Demand for SI couple's arrest When the police held talks with the family members of the deceased on Tuesday (July 29) night, in a bid to persuade them to receive Kavin's body from the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, his family stated that they would do so only if Surjith's parents — Sub-Inspectors Saravanan and Krishnakumari, who have been named as accused in the First Information Report (FIR) — were also arrested. The talks remained inconclusive, and as of Wednesday (July 30) afternoon, there was no sign of the body being received. Meanwhile, the questioning of Saravanan and Krishnakumari, who have been placed under suspension after being named in the FIR, is still under way. Investigators are trying to determine whether the couple played any role in the murder or had prior knowledge of their son Surjith's alleged plan to kill Kavin, who was in a relationship with their daughter, a Siddha medical practitioner. After his arrest, Surjith reportedly told the police that he had warned Kavin, an IT employee, many times to sever the ties with his sister as he belonged to an SC community, and she, an Most Backward Classes (MBC) community. 'When Kavin brought his grandfather for treatment to the Siddha hospital where the woman was working last Sunday, Surjith utilised the opportunity to murder Kavin,' said the police, after recording the statement of the accused. Based on the information the investigators have obtained so far from Surjith and his sister, the police are questioning their parents. Officials have also planned to take Surjith into custody for further interrogation.

A 27-year-old Dalit man was hacked to death in broad daylight in Tamil Nadu's Thirunelveli district, in what his family alleges to be a caste-based honour killing. The victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, a software engineer, was employed at a leading IT firm in Chennai and was reportedly in a long-term relationship with a woman from an Other Backward Class (OBC) to reporters in Thoothukudi, the victim's father, Chandrashekar, said, 'My son had finished engineering and was working in Chennai. They were in love since the time they were in 11th standard. The girl was the one who was torturing my son into meeting her. He would not go. We are from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community and they are from the Thevar community. The girl's parents and brother made my son meet them and killed him. We demand justice and the partners should be arrested.'The murder took place outside a private hospital in KTC Nagar, Thirunelveli, on Sunday. The victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, was visiting his partner, when her brother Surjeet allegedly lured him away under the pretext of a conversation. Police say Surjeet then pulled out a sickle and hacked Kavin to death around 200 metres from the hospital premises. Surjeet initially fled the scene but later surrendered at Palayamkottai police station and has been detained under the Goondas Act. Police sent Kavin's body for post-mortem to the District Government Hospital and collected CCTV footage from the area as part of the family had refused to accept his body, demanding the arrest of not just Surjeet but also his parents—Saravanan and Krishnakumari—both serving Sub-Inspectors in the Tamil Nadu Police. They allege the girl's entire family plotted and carried out the murder.
