Palestinian activist and consultant on Oscar-winning documentary shot dead by Israeli settler in West Bank, say witnesses
The Israeli army said in a statement on Tuesday that 'terrorists hurled rocks toward Israeli civilians near Carmel,' an Israeli settlement near the village of Umm al-Khair.
The military said that an armed civilian then fired towards those throwing rocks, adding that the army was aware of reports of unspecified injuries to individuals and had transferred the incident to the police.
The police said it had launched an investigation that was in its 'early stages' and that an Israeli individual had been detained.
'Additionally, four Palestinians were arrested by IDF soldiers for their involvement in the incident, as well as two foreign tourists who were present at the site,' the police said in a statement.
'As a result of the incident, the death of a Palestinian was confirmed,' said the statement.
Palestinian state media reported that Hathaleen was the man killed.
Alaa Hathaleen, Owdeh's cousin, filmed the incident on his phone. He said his cousin 'was far away and not doing anything' when he was shot.
'Why does it always have to be us on the losing side, to feel this sort of pain daily, to lose people we love?' Alaa Hathaleen said in an interview with Reuters.
The video shows a confrontation between a group of men screaming in Arabic and a man holding a gun. The gun-holder then fires into the air and towards the crowd. Screams are heard and people can be seen running away.
Reuters was able to confirm the location of the video by the buildings, tower structure in the background, and road and village layout, which matched file and satellite imagery of the area. The date could not be verified.
Owdeh Hathaleen aided the producer of the 2024 film No Other Land, which documented the life of Palestinians in the West Bank and included settler attacks.
B'Tselem and other rights groups say settler violence in the West Bank has risen since the start of Israel's war against Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza in late 2023.
Dozens of Israelis have also been killed in street attacks by Palestinians in recent years, and the Israeli military has intensified raids across the West Bank.
Around 700,000 Israeli settlers live among 2.7 million Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories Israel captured from Jordan in the 1967 war, which Palestinians see as part of a future state. — Reuters

Spanish police recover bodies of father, son after plane crash
MADRID (Reuters) -The bodies of a pilot and his son were recovered after their biplane plunged into the sea off the Spanish island of Mallorca, police said on Sunday. The two-seater Team Rocket F-4 Raider plane crashed into the sea in the Puerto Soller area on Saturday night. The plane appeared to be performing stunts before the crash, Spanish media reported. Divers searching for the pilot and his 13-year-old son located their bodies in the sea after a search on Sunday. "At approximately 1 p.m. (1100 GMT) specialist divers from the Civil Guard recovered the lifeless bodies of the pilot and his son who accompanied him in a sea which reaches a depth of 30 metres and they have been transferred to the Puerto of Soller," the Spanish Civil Guard said in a statement. The plane crashed around 8.20pm and an initial search by emergency teams was launched. When this failed to locate the pilot and his son, it was resumed at first light on Sunday. An investigation into the circumstances of the crash will be launched by police. (Editing by Toby Chopra)

UK threatens jail for people smugglers who advertise on social media
Migrants walk along the road after attempting to leave the French coast to cross the English Channel to reach Britain, as tougher migration controls were announced, in Wimereux, near Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, July 18, 2025. REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -People smugglers who use social media to promote their services to migrants seeking to enter Britain illegally could face five years in prison under plans announced by the government. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government is under huge political and public pressure to cut the number of migrants arriving illegally in small boats from France. More than 25,000 people have made the crossing so far this year. Analysis by the Interior Ministry showed around 80% of migrants arriving on small boats had used social media during their journey to find or communicate with people smugglers. Under a new offence, which will be added to legislation already passing through parliament, individuals who post online to advertise services that facilitate a breach of immigration laws will face fines and prison sentences of up to five years. It is already an offence to facilitate illegal immigration to Britain, but the government said its latest plan would give law enforcement agencies another option to disrupt the criminal gangs that profit from organising the crossings. Last month, the government launched a new sanctions regime allowing it to freeze assets, impose travel bans and block access to the country's financial system for individuals and entities involved in enabling irregular migration. Israeli strike on Red Crescent HQ in Gaza kills staff member
GAZA: An Israeli airstrike targeted the headquarters of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Khan Younis early Sunday, killing a staff member and injuring three others, according to a statement by the organisation. The attack struck the first floor of the building, igniting a fire and causing extensive damage. The strike occurred shortly after US envoy Steve Witkoff visited Gaza to assess food distribution efforts in the territory, where hunger-related deaths have surged. 'Gaza is now on the brink of a full-scale famine. People are starving not because food is unavailable, but because access is blocked, local agrifood systems have collapsed, and families can no longer sustain even the most basic livelihoods,' said Qu Dongyu, head of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation. Israel has rejected international calls for a ceasefire, continuing military operations that have killed over 60,400 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, since October 2023. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
