Rock collapse at Indonesia quarry kills at least 10 people, Asia News

AsiaOne31-05-2025
JAKARTA - At least 10 people in Indonesia's West Java were killed and six injured on Friday (May 30) following a rock collapse at a quarry, the disaster agency said, with search efforts ongoing to find people buried beneath the rubble.
The collapse took place in Cirebon in West Java, where television footage showed excavators working to move huge rocks and personnel moving bags containing bodies to an ambulance. Kompas TV earlier said about 10 people were missing.
The national disaster management agency said heavy machinery, including three excavators, were also buried under rocks and operations would continue on Saturday. It gave no estimate on the number of people missing.
West Java's governor, Dedi Mulyadi, on his Instagram account said the site was dangerous and "does not meet safety standards for workers".

Zookeeper Mauled to Death by Leopard After it Escapes Enclosure During Behind-the-Scenes Tour at Jerusalem Zoo

A zoo worker has been mauled to death by a leopard after the big cat escaped an enclosure while being fed. Uriel Nuri, 36, was rushed to hospital with extensive head injuries after he was found unresponsive at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo on Friday, Aug. 1. The zoo said it was working with Israeli police to investigate how the wild animal escaped into the courtyard where Mr Nuri was working. Mr Nuri was head of the zoo's carnivores team, according to his Instagram page, where he posted videos about his work. "After prolonged resuscitation efforts, the team was forced to declare him dead," Hadassah Medical Center said. "The hospital staff is accompanying his family at this difficult time and shares in their grief." The 62-acre zoo is home to dozens of species of animals. As its name suggests, its particular focus is on animals which appear in the Bible, as well as endangered species from around the world. In a Facebook post last month during Israel's war with Iran, Mr Nuri wrote about his dedication to his work even during times of emergency and posted a photo of himself feeding a leopard. Zoo Releases Statement, Says the Incident Took Place During a Behind-The-Scenes Tour In a statement obtained by BBC News, a zoo spokesperson said: "The tragic event occurred this morning, when during a routine activity to prepare the leopards for enrichment, which took place as part of a behind-the-scenes tour for visitors to the zoo, a leopard managed to escape from the leopard enclosure into the inner courtyard and attack one of the zoo employees who was preparing the activity. "At no point was there any physical danger to the visitors, who stood protected behind a glass window. With the help of the Israel Police, we are now conducting a comprehensive investigation to understand how the leopard managed to escape into the courtyard." Police are currently investigating whether a technical malfunction in the door to the enclosure allowed the animal to escape, as reported by local news outlets.

'This is really sad to see': Viral video shows soldier vaping on board bus

A viral video showing a soldier in army uniform vaping on a public bus has reignited concerns over the growing prevalence of e-cigarette use among young people in Singapore. The 58-second video, initially posted on Instagram account @sgfollowsall, showed the man slouched in the last row of a bus, appearing dazed as he brought a vape device to his mouth multiple times and exhaled in the enclosed space. He was seen repeating the act at least four times. The video was later taken down but has since resurfaced on subreddit r/SingaporeRaw on Aug 1 around 11am. Reddit comments ranged from apathy to sarcasm and disapproval. One Redditor remarked: "Vaping is more dangerous to those around him. Those in the bus or MRT did not consent to inhaling vapes or etomidate." Another Redditor added: "Parents really need to keep track of what their kids are doing outside. And kids need to understand how disastrous vape is for their minds and bodies." Some commenters suggested the boy appeared "addicted", with one remarking that his actions looked like "muscle memory". Others questioned whether current enforcement efforts were keeping up. "This has less to do with "less penalties" but more to do with less enforcement against vaping or regulation having to keep up with the rapid emergence of new or novel drugs," one said. "Vape is literally everywhere now - you can see people openly vape." Calls for tougher action also surfaced. "What is wrong with these youngsters? Who is systematically distributing these drugs in Singapore?" asked a Redditor. Yet, a few expressed sympathy, viewing the video as a reflection of deeper issues. "Poor thing," said one. Another remarked: "To be honest, this is really sad to see on so many levels." The New Paper has reached out to the Ministry of Defence for comments.

Four-times Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs signed the 24-year-old Welshman in March last year after he impressed scouts at the NFL International Player Pathway, but later left him off their roster for the 2024 season. Last August, Rees-Zammit joined the Jacksonville Jaguars as part of their practice squad before signing to their active roster in February. "I've got an exciting announcement to make! I've decided to leave the NFL and return to rugby!" Rees-Zammit posted on Instagram late on Thursday. "It's been a great experience but it's time to come home. I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season." Rees-Zammit made his debut in 2020 and won the Six Nations Championship with Wales the following year. He made 32 appearances for his country, scoring 14 tries, playing his last match for Wales at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, when they lost to Argentina in the quarter-finals. "There's only one thing that's on my mind, that's coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can't explain how excited I am!!" he added. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed.
