5 men's March Madness upsets to expect in the 1st round, including 1 each region
When it comes to double-digit seeds pulling off first-round upsets in the NCAA men's tournament, none have done it more than 11-seeds over 6-seeds, contrary to those popular picks from 12-5 matchups. Even in 2024, three 11-seeds won to outdo the two wins by 12-seeds.
I again expect 11-6 to be a source of upsets in the first round of 2025 March Madness, but this time around I think the 12-seeds come out on top after getting a head start from No. 12 Colorado State being favored over No. 5 Memphis. These are my favorite upset picks for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

South Region: 12 UC San Diego over 5 Michigan
The Tritons have a top-15 offensive and defensive rating, a veteran-laden team and they shoot the lights out from three. There's a reason this spread is so small.
East Region: 12 Liberty over 5 Oregon
Liberty limits opponents to 63 points per game, 40 percent shooting from the field and 28% from three, while shooting a high clip from deep itself. If the Flames get hot, Oregon could have a hard time keeping up while trading twos.
East Region: 11 VCU over 6 BYU
VCU has incredible length across its lineup that contributes to a disruptive defense that could make things tough for a BYU team that already prefers to stand around the 3-point. Freshman Egor Demin will have a ton of pressure to create open shots for the Cougars.
Midwest Region: 13 High Point over 8 Purdue
What we have here is a high-powered High Point offense against an underwhelming Purdue defense. Between Kezza Giffa, Kimani Hamilton, D'maurian Williams and other scorers in that Panthers rotation, Matt Painter's squad is not going to have an easy time avoiding another early exit after losing to a 16-seed in 2023.
West Region: 11 Drake over 6 Missouri
At 19 points per game (and 39 minutes!), Bennett Stirtz is an absolute bucket for the Bulldogs. It's hard to feel good about Missouri coming up with a plan to stop him and Drake fresh off four losses in their last five games where they gave up an average of 95 points in the losses.

Bill Belichick getting new UNC boss in 2026 as questions persist about future

North Carolina is making some changes at the top of its athletic program, with athletic director Bubba Cunningham moving into an advisory role following the season. Cunningham will continue his current role until the summer of 2026, when he will then transition to senior advisor to the chancellor and athletic director, according to the university. 3 Bubba Cunningham has served as UNC's Athletic Director since 2011. AP 'As part of my last contract extension, I committed to working with University leadership on a succession plan that would positively position Carolina Athletics and our 28 teams for the future,' Cunningham said. 'I appreciate the opportunity to extend my contract and enhance my role in a way that will allow me to continue to support our outstanding student-athletes, coaches and staff as we transition and navigate the changing athletics landscape. I am excited for the future.' Cunningham has been UNC's director of athletics since 2011 and has led the Tar Heel programs to 24 national titles in his tenure. He, along with an advisory committee, made the decision to hire the polarizing Belichick in December with hopes to revive the program which hasn't won a bowl game since 2019. Belichick was reportedly not Cunningham's 'preferred target' in the coaching search, perhaps suggesting a disconnect between the two. 3 Bubba Cunningham brought abord Bill Belichick. AP The 73-year-old is under contract as head coach until 2029, though his buyout sits at just $1 million, paving a way for a potential UNC departure if things don't go according to plan after his first season — or if he were to be eyeing up any sort of NFL job that may arise. With Cunningham's move to a new role, Steve Newmark, the president of Roush Fenway Keselowski (RFK) Racing, a NASCAR team, will take over. RFK Racing is a part of the Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Newmark has been hired as executive associate athletic director and 'will report to Cunningham and initially focus his attention on strategies tied to revenue-driving initiatives, particularly related to UNC's Football and Men's and Women's Basketball programs, before transitioning to the Director of Athletics role in the summer of 2026,' according to UNC. 3 Bill Belichick next to his girlfriend Jordon Hudson. NHLI via Getty Images Cunningham was involved in some controversy earlier this year when UNC's men's basketball team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament over teams who were seemingly more deserving. He was chairman of the tournament's selection committee and had a clause in his UNC contract for monetary bonuses if the team reached the tournament — prompting an investigation brought forth by one of the snubbed tournament teams, West Virginia, into collusion.

LSU baseball transfer portal: Tigers add Big Ten reliever with strikeout stuff

LSU baseball's latest addition from the transfer portal comes from the Big Ten in former Oregon pitcher Santiago Garcia, according to reports on Tuesday. The lefty made 22 appearances out of the bullpen in 2025. Through 28 innings pitched, he posted a 4.18 ERA and 38 strikeouts to 18 walks. Opposing hitters bat .165 against him. Garcia made appearances in three of the Ducks' four postseason games, including an inning apiece in the Eugene Regional during the NCAA Tournament. He surrendered one run on two hits during those appearances. The southpaw allowed two or more runs just four times in 2025. In Oregon's first Big Ten season, Garcia consistently earned high-leverage appearances and pitched well under pressure. He'll join the Tigers' bullpen, which will experience a shakeup as LSU's two starters, Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson, head to the MLB. Garcia is the third pitcher brought in by head coach Jay Johnson following LSU's national championship win. He joins fellow lefties Danny Lachenmayer and Ryler Smart.
