Tamil medium criteria lifted for transgender kids to avail aid
So far, the students should have mandatorily studied in Tamil medium from Classes 6 to 12 in government or government-aided schools to qualify for the monthly Rs 1,000 financial aid.
The condition has now been waived in a bid to include more transgender and intersex individuals who were previously not covered under the scheme. Transgender students enrolled in diploma, undergraduate, or vocational courses can apply for the scheme through the UMIS portal.
An official release said applicants must submit valid identification cards issued by the Tamil Nadu Transgender Welfare Board to avail themselves of the benefits.
In the budget this year, the state government had announced that the Pudhumai Penn scheme, that provides Rs 1,000 per month as cash incentives to students, would be expanded to include transgender persons.

1,700 to witness Thiruparankundram temple consecration directly
Madurai: Arrangements have been made for 1,700 devotees to directly witness the consecration ceremony of the Thiruparankundram Murugan temple to be held on July 14, while LED screens will be set up at 40 spots in and around the temple, Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR and CE) minister P K Sekar Babu, said on Tuesday. The HR and CE minister, along with state commercial taxes and registration minister P Moorthy, Madurai district collector K J Praveen Kumar, Madurai city police commissioner J Loganathan, Madurai corporation commissioner Chithra Vijayan, and other officials, reviewed the works underway for the consecration ceremony. "Around five lakh devotees took part in the consecration ceremony of Tiruchendur Murugan temple. It is a milestone of the state govt under chief minister M K Stalin. Not a single untoward incident was reported thanks to the efficient work of officials. Similarly, the Thiruparankundram Murugan temple consecration ceremony will also be conducted smoothly and all needs of devotees shall be fulfilled," he said. Sekar Babu observed that work for the consecration ceremony is underway at 2.37 crore. "The public works department has given permission to allow 1,700 devotees based on structure stability. Since more devotees are expected, it will be ensured that anyone standing on the three streets of the temple will be able to witness the event on LED screens, which will be set up at 40 spots. Arrangements for toilets, drinking water, ORS, fire safety and rescue teams, sanitation workers for clearing garbage, and medical teams have all been discussed. Around 3,000 police personnel are set to be deployed for security," he added. The minister also assured to take the request for a local holiday to be announced on July 14 on the day of the consecration ceremony to the chief minister's notice. "Transport will be specially arranged for devotees from other districts. Food will be provided for around four lakh devotees in 14 mandapams (halls). The consecration ceremony will be conducted with Tamil othuvars especially women othuvars and 200 Sivacharyas and 80 othuvars will be participating," he said. Sekar Babu also inaugurated the temple car festival as part of the Aani festival at Nellaiappar Gandhimathi Amman temple in Tirunelveli, along with state assembly speaker M Appavu.

Over 5,500 stray cattle rescued in five months, shifted to Hingoniya
Jaipur: In a significant animal welfare push, Jaipur Municipal Corporation-Greater (JMC-G) rescued and relocated over 5,500 stray cattle from city roads to the Hingonia Gaushala over the past five months. In addition, more than 1,000 injured or sick cattle were transported and admitted for treatment through the corporation's dedicated animal ambulance service. To review preparations ahead of the monsoon, JMC-G commissioner Gaurav Saini conducted a surprise inspection of Hingoniya Gaushala Tuesday. Saini said, "During the monsoon season, ensuring proper fodder supply, drainage, and medical facilities becomes even more critical. The safety and well-being of cattle is our top priority." He closely inspected the condition of the gaushala, checking cleanliness, cattle health, fodder availability, and on-site medical arrangements. Kochi corporation moots increase in remuneration for dog catchers
Kochi: Finance standing committee of Kochi corporation has recommended increasing the remuneration for dog catchers at its animal birth control (ABC) centre at Brahmapuram. Currently, dog catchers receive a payment of Rs 20,000 per month without any additional financial benefits. Due to the meagre remuneration, many individuals who cleared the interview for dog catchers' post are not joining the centre, corporation officials said. "Even while the stray dog menace is worsening, the corporation is unable to appoint more dog catchers. It is a dangerous, difficult and low-profile job. Even the guest workers deployed for menial jobs are getting more wages, while the dog catchers get less than Rs 700 a day. That is why we decided to suggest increasing the remuneration," said finance standing committee member M G Aristotle. "We have recommended discussing the suggestion at the next council meeting," he added. Currently, there are only four dog catchers at the ABC centre in Brahmapuram. This affects the pace of vaccination and sterilisation. Licence for paying guest facilities: The meeting held on Monday, also suggested a 'special residence tag' for paying guest facilities in the city. "With the increased inflow of students and job aspirants from other districts to Kochi, hundreds of paying guest facilities are mushrooming in the city. Unfortunately, none of them have a licence. There is a provision for giving the corporation's licence for homestays, but in the case of paying guest facilities, there isn't any such provision. However, there is a provision in the building rules with which a 'special residence' licence to paying guest facilities can be provided," Aristotle said.
